Ineos Automotive announced Friday it has begun building Ineos Grenadier SUVs for the North American market. The company also said American Ineos buyers can expect to receive their vehicles in November, while Canadian customers can expect their Grenadiers in January.
Ineos has more than 7,000 orders from U.S. buyers, making it the company’s largest market. The first U.S.-bound Grenadier — a Belstaff Fieldmaster in Scottish White — rolled off the line on Thursday.
“The start of production for North American vehicles is a significant moment for Ineos Automotive,” said company CEO Lynn Calder.
“We have been ramping up the production rate over the last six months to ensure we can deliver to customers as quickly as possible, while maintaining the world-class quality standards we set for ourselves.”
Ineos, a privately held chemical firm, ranks as the third largest in the world with $65 billion in annual sales, 25,000 workers, and 39 businesses in 31 countries. It’s the parent company of the new automaker, which was established in 2017. This is one neophyte automaker that’s well-funded.
Ineos Automotive North America is headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina.
What they’re driving
Offered in three trim levels — base, off-road-oriented Grenadier Trialmaster and fancier Grenadier Fieldmaster — the new Grenadier, which the company refers to as a station wagon, was developed with help from BMW and automotive supplier Magna Steyr. Ineos Grenadiers are built in Hambach, France at a former Mercedes-Benz plant.
Built from a mix of aluminum, steel and a ladder chassis, the body-on-frame Grenadier is tough enough for you to sit, stand, or work on the bumper, fenders and hood. As for the roof, it can hold as much as 750 pounds when parked, and up to 300 pounds when moving.
A BMW turbocharged 3.0-liter straight 6-cylinder engine and 8-speed ZF transmission generates 282 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. The Grenadier is equipped with a Tremac transfer case, Eaton differential lockers, and Brembo brakes. All-wheel drive is standard.
The company says the Grenadier has a 35.5-degree approach angle, 36.1-degree departure angle and 10.4 inches of ground clearance
Where’s a dealer?
While the Ineos Grenadier can be ordered online, Ineos has established dealers around the country in smile states, aka those on both coasts and the South. The automaker has contracted with BMW to handle routine maintenance, and many of the Grenadier’s parts are off-the-shelf items.
“We have spent a long time selecting an exceptional team of experienced dealers and are excited that we will soon be able to announce them and begin guiding the Grenadier station wagons home for our customers,” said Greg Clark, executive vice president Americas for Ineos Automotive.
