Becoming an Amazon delivery driver can be a great way to pick up some extra income, but will it require you to purchase additional auto insurance, like Amazon delivery auto insurance? In this article, we’ll explore the insurance options for Amazon delivery drivers.

If you’re in the market for auto insurance, you can use our free tool above. Our experts have reviewed every major insurance company to identify the industry’s leaders. Simply enter your zip code above to receive free insurance quotes from providers in your area.

        Insurance Requirements for Amazon Drivers

Amazon allows you to deliver products using your personal vehicle through its Amazon Flex program. You can even deliver groceries and food products as a driver for Amazon Fresh.

Both of these package delivery services require that drivers maintain a personal auto insurance policy based on their specific state requirements, such as maintaining auto liability coverage. This means that Amazon Flex delivery drivers and Amazon Fresh drivers should check with their insurance company to make sure their personal coverage is adequate and current.

However, it is important to note that personal auto insurance won’t cover you when you use your car for commercial purposes, like when you’re making deliveries for Amazon. Commercial drivers will need an additional commercial auto insurance policy.

Does Amazon Offer Auto Insurance Coverage for Its Drivers?

Amazon provides its Flex drivers with commercial auto insurance at no additional cost through the Amazon Commercial Auto Insurance Policy.

Details of the Amazon Commercial Auto Insurance Policy

What can you expect from the Amazon Commercial Auto Insurance Policy? This coverage includes:

        • General liability coverage for up to $1 million in damages to another vehicle/person
        • Coverage of up to $50,000 in damage for your vehicle
        • A $1,000 deductible for at-fault accidents

It is important to note that the commercial coverage for your vehicle only applies if you have personal comprehensive and collision coverage.

        It Only Covers Drivers

It is important to note that the Amazon Commercial Auto Insurance Policy only covers drivers. If you make deliveries with a friend, that person may not be covered in the event of an accident, which means you could be sued for medical expenses. Your personal liability insurance may not cover these expenses if you’re driving for commercial purposes.

It’s Not Available in New York

The state of New York has its own unique insurance regulations. Flex and Fresh drivers should check with their local provider to see what the local requirements and options are, in addition to determining what their insurance covers.

Should You Tell Your Insurer that You’re Driving for Amazon?

Unless you specifically say otherwise, your auto insurance provider will assume that you’re using your car solely for personal reasons. If you get into an accident while making deliveries for Amazon, your insurance agency may not only deny your claim, but it may even void your policy altogether. This could leave you with a bill for property damage and bodily injury, as well as the need to obtain a new insurance provider.

For this reason, it is very important that you be sure and notify your insurance company that you’re driving for Amazon immediately. Your insurance agent will almost certainly be familiar with the Amazon Commercial Auto Insurance Policy and can provide you with any additional commercial insurance coverage if you need it.

        USAA: 9.6 out of 10.0

        FAQ: Amazon Delivery Auto Insurance

What are the requirements to be an Amazon delivery driver?

According to Amazon, drivers must meet the following requirements:

        – Be 21 years of age or older
        – Have a valid driver’s license
        – Maintain personal auto insurance
        – Have an iPhone or Android Smartphone
        – Drive a 4-door sedan or SUV

You’ll also need commercial auto insurance, which Amazon will provide for free (excluding those driving in the state of New York).

Where can I buy Amazon delivery driver auto insurance?

Most major car insurance companies provide options for commercial auto insurance. Some of these companies include:

        – Allstate
        – GEICO
        – State Farm
        – Farmers
        – Progressive
        – USAA

Remember, outside of the state of New York, Amazon will provide its drivers with a basic commercial auto insurance policy at no cost. Consider whether this policy is sufficient for your needs before investing in additional coverage for your vehicle.

What is the best vehicle for Amazon Flex?

Because you’ll be using your own car to deliver packages of varying sizes, you’ll generally want to be driving a fairly large vehicle, such as a 4-door vehicle. Having four doors will also enable you to retrieve packages from the backseat more efficiently.

At the same time, you also want a vehicle with good fuel efficiency, as Amazon does not offer reimbursement for mileage or fuel when you’re using your own vehicle.

Most mid-size vehicles or larger make ideal vehicles for an Amazon Flex driver.

How much can I earn delivering for Amazon?

If you deliver for Amazon, you can expect to earn between $18 and $25 per hour. However, this rate may be affected by your geographic location, the tips you receive, and how quickly it takes you to make your deliveries.

Keep in mind that Amazon does not offer reimbursement for mileage, gas or workers compensation. You’ll also be classified as an independent contractor, which may affect how you pay taxes.

        Methodology

The Detroit Bureau collects data from every major car insurance provider to formulate rankings of the best insurers. Our in-depth rating system takes into account market share, coverage, pricing, customer satisfaction and ratings from industry experts. Each insurer is given a weighted score in four categories, as well as an overall score out of 10.0.

We recommend auto insurance companies based on these rankings, but we also encourage you to perform your own research and compare quotes to find the best coverage.
