Ford took the covers off the 2023 model year Escape, showing a more European styled exterior as well as new names for the four available trim levels, including the new ST-Line model.
The newest iteration gets a revamped exterior for the new model year, featuring a sleeker, more European look than its predecessor, as well as some interior updates including larger screens and more updated technology.
The biggest change is the addition of an ST-Line version of the Escape. The ST-Line designation is already in use on two other vehicles in the company, is a fitting addition to the line-up. The ST-Line gives the new Escape a sportier look, but not the ticket-inducing performance mods the updates look like it has.
The move is part of an effort to make the Escape better connected to buyers, officials noted. Instead of using old nomenclature like SE or SEL, the new model comes in four trim levels: Active, PHEV, ST-Line and the top-of-the-line Platinum. Ford officials said during an event last week with the media they ditched the old letters because “no one knew what they meant.”
Styling makes a difference
The previous iteration underwent a substantial overhaul on the outside while the new version gets a significantly new look.
“Not every customer wants a rugged and boxy SUV, so we’ve made the new Escape more energetic, confident and sleeker,” said Amko Leenarts, director, Ford Design. “The Escape interior complements the exterior, with a relaxing space that’s stylish yet comfortable with easy access to technology for the road or staying connected with friends and family.”
The new look also helps to further differentiate the Escape from the Bronco Sport, with which it shares a platform. Adrienne Zaski, Escape brand manager, notes it’s important to provide that very clear split because the buyers are very, very different.
She explained Escape buyers are folks that get in their vehicle and find it to be almost a calming space, a spot where once they get in they can exhale and prepare for their drive home or perhaps take a few minutes to collect themselves at their final designation. Bronco Sport owners want to get in their vehicles and go have some fun and adventure.
The new ST-Line is expected to make a big difference. In fact, Zaski told TheDetroitBureau.com the new model is expected to be the line-up’s top seller, accounting for more than half of all sales coming into the new model year.
