Bentley Ready to Create Buzz with New Continental GT

Luxury grand tourer looks to set new standard.

by on Sep.04, 2017

Bentley is unveiling its third-generation Continental GT at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Luxury maker Bentley often describes its Continental GT as the heart of its line-up, if so, the updated 2018 version basically equates to a heart transplant.

The third-generation GT — it debuted in 2003 — will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week. The latest iteration expands on the grand touring model’s history of luxury, technology and performance.

The new version still radiates “upper crust,” but with a sleeker design featuring a more aggressive look, the company is really pushing the GT’s performance characteristics with an exterior displaying sharper creases and smaller, almost jewel-like LED lights to make it look almost angry. (more…)

Porsche Pushes Into Bentley Territory with Panamera Exclusive Series

Limited-edition sedan lands above “base” Continental GT.

by on Oct.31, 2014

The Porsche Panamera Exclusive Series is creating a little sibling rivalry with the Bentley Continental GT.

When it comes to the upper reaches of the luxury car market, it’s getting hard to tell the players without a scorecard. And that means some sibling brands are suddenly turning into rivals.

The latest example comes with the unveiling of the new Porsche Panamera Exclusive Series. While it’s not the most expensive model the German maker has ever offered – at barely a third the price of the 918 Spyder ultracar – the limited-edition sedan lands well above the “base” Bentley Continental GT and not much below the British maker’s top-line Mulsanne model.

Then again, Bentley is getting ready to roll out an all-new luxury SUV, which could start siphoning sales away from Porsche, its Volkswagen Group partner. (more…)

Bentley Muscles in on Festival of Speed

Luxury maker using UK event to reveal Continental GT Speed.

by on Jun.13, 2012

Bentley is expected to debut the ultimate version of its GT, the Continental GT Speed, at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed.

It’s become as much a rite of the summer season as the upcoming solstice, tens, if not hundreds of thousands turning out for the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed.  And among those in attendance will be some very senior executives from Bentley Motors.

For good reason, it seems.  The British marque will be one of the key sponsors of the event – which is marked by its iconic supercar climb up Goodwood Hill – and will have its largest-ever presence at the show.

The Festival focuses on classic supercars, some dating back to the dawn of the automotive era. But occasionally, something new squeezes in a run up the hill.  A Bentley news release is promising “the international debut of a new model (that combines) stunning performance with exquisite luxury in the Bentley tradition” though it says details only “will be released before the start of the Festival.”  No matter.  Barring an unexpected surprise, it appears the model the German-owned maker has in mind is the next-generation Continental GT Speed, according to word that inadvertently was leaked out by Festival of Speed organizers.

Bentley Adds V-8 to Continental Line-Up

Luxury maker aims to boost mileage, maintain performance.

by on Dec.13, 2011

Bentley aims to improve mileage with its new V-8.

It isn’t often one hears a V-8 described as a way to save fuel.  But not many makers today rely solely on V-12 power, so with the addition of new twin-turbo V-8 to its Continental line-up Bentley just might be able to meet its goal of slashing the fuel consumption of its typical vehicle.

The new twin-turbo 4-liter V-8 is expected to continue delivering the sort of performance Bentley buyers continue to demand, the maker says, noting that the new engine will be able to propel a nearly 5,000 machine from 0 to 60 in under 5 seconds.

The engine, shared with the Audi S8 – both makers being part of the Volkswagen empire – will first appear in the coming year under the hood of the Continental GT coupe and GTC convertible models.  While specific fuel economy numbers haven’t been finalized, Bentley is broadly hinting at mileage in the range of 21 mpg Combined.  That might not sound like much in this era but would go a long way towards meeting the ultra-luxury maker’s goal of boosting its Corporate Average Fuel Economy numbers by 40%.

Is this a car show, or is it really a reason to examine ladies in the latest fashions and munch on exquisite food in the world center for fashion and food?

Certainly, there will be some significant and beautiful cars unveiled at the Paris Motor Show – to name a few, Lamborghini, Lotus and General Motors are all planning major announcements -  but this is the City of Lights and beautiful frocks and delicious food are sure to be part of the fun.

As part of the festivities, Range Rover is unveiling four street installations created by Parisian artists to celebrate the launch of the Range Rover Evoque.

Also Bentley plans to make several announcements that have nothing to do with cars. The British automaker will show what describes as “best in class” products from its partners including new watches from Breitling, Tibaldi pens, Estede eyewear and zai skis.

First Look: 2011 Bentley Continental GT

Familiar yet different.

by on Sep.07, 2010

All-new? The look of the next-generation Bentley Continental GT is familiar.

Things move at a different pace in Coventry, the headquarters for Bentley Motors.  Change comes slowly and deliberately, but come it must, as the maker has lately been demonstrating.

Soon after the introduction of the all-new Bentley flagship, the big Mulsanne saloon car, the Volkswagen AG subsidiary is pulling the wraps off an updated version of its best-selling Continental GT.  But any sense of déjà vu is understandable.  Despite what the maker claims are some significant technical enhancements – the use of advanced body production systems, a new FlexFuel W12 powertrain and an updated infotainment system – the overall look is very much in line with the outgoing version of the luxury coupe.

The launch of the next-generation Bentley Continental GT couldn’t come at a more crucial time.  The British maker scored an impressive hit with the original coupe and the numerous Continental variants  that followed – such as the GTC convertible and Flying Spur sedan – the brand’s overall volume soaring to more than 10,000 cars a year.
