Delphi's a leader in autonomous vehicle technology, and just inked a deal with Innoviz, an Israeli technology firm, for lidar development.

Delphi Automotive has signed a commercial partnership agreement with Innoviz Technologies, an Israeli technology firm developing Lidar systems for autonomous vehicles.

In addition to the agreement, Delphi has taken a minority stake in Innoviz, although the size of that ownership share was not revealed.

Innoviz’s proprietary Lidar sensing solutions, one of the key building blocks needed for self-driving vehicles, will be integrated into Delphi’s systems to provide makers of autonomous cars and trucks with a comprehensive portfolio of autonomous driving technologies.

The Delphi-Innoviz partnership is the latest wrinkle in the race among car makers, automotive suppliers and tech companies, large and small, to develop an automated vehicle.

“Along with radar and vision technology, Lidar is an essential component to Delphi’s automated driving perception suite,” said Glen De Vos, Delphi Automotive senior vice president and chief technology officer. “Innoviz is developing a product that provides a high performance intelligent sensing solution to help advance automated driving technology.”

“Delphi shares our vision for making vehicles smarter and safer,” said Omer Keilaf, co-founder and CEO of Innoviz.

“By challenging the conventions of Lidar design, we were able to develop a Lidar solution that delivers superior performance at a reasonable price and in a much smaller footprint – three factors that are required to help autonomous driving achieve mass commercialization,” Keilaf said.

Founded in January 2016, Innoviz develops remote sensing solutions aimed at enabling the mass commercialization of autonomous vehicles.

The company was founded by former members of the elite technological unit of the Israeli Defense Forces with expertise in the fields of electro-optics, computer vision and signal processing. Innoviz is backed by top-tier investors including Vertex.

The company’s Lidar products, InnovizOne and InnovizPro, offer solid-state design that uses proprietary technology to deliver superior performance at the cost and size required for mass market adoption.

The system utilizes a solid-state design to provide longer-range scanning performance and superior object detection and accuracy capabilities, which are critical for enabling Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous vehicles to travel at high speeds, which will need to identify objects at far distances and in great detail in order to operate safely.
