And though CEO Mary Barra was not ready to comment about future models during a media roundtable in Las Vegas, she stressed the speed with which GM will have gone from concept to customer with the 200-mile Bolt. It was first revealed in prototype form at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, returning in production form at this week’s Consumer Electronics Show. The Chevy Bolt will be on sale later this year.

The completely redesigned 2016 Chevrolet Volt has been named Green Car of the Year, repeating a victory it claimed when the original plug-in hybrid debuted a half-decade ago.

The Volt knocked down an impressive list of competitors that included the new, fourth-generation 2016 Toyota Prius, the world’s best-selling hybrid-electric vehicle.

“This is certainly something special,” proclaimed Steve Mojoras, Chevy’s marketing manager, after accepting the crystal trophy at the L.A. Auto Show event. “This is a hard market to crack. This is the Super Bowl of green car awards, so it adds instant validation.”

Lower battery costs will let GM price the Chevy Bolt around $35,000 before federal incentives.

Often criticized for the way it hammers price cuts out of its suppliers, General Motors is taking a very different approach in the development of its first long-range battery-electric vehicle, the Chevrolet Bolt. In a joint news conference with Korea’s LG Corp., GM officials outlined a new strategy putting a premium on partnership.

The new approach could be a blueprint for the future, suggested Mark Reuss, GM’s global product development director. It may also help LG become a major force in the emerging electric vehicle market, rather than just being relegated to supplying batteries to carmakers like GM.


“GM used to act more like a dictator than a customer,” said Reuss, during a tour of the electric vehicle operations at the maker’s suburban Detroit technical center.  That approach, primarily focused on squeezing out costs, is “unsuitable and unsustainable,” Reuss added.

The 2016 Chevrolet Volt will get a 40% boost in its battery-only range.

Chevrolet’s much-anticipated, second-generation Volt plug-in hybrid will make its initial sales debut in only a small number of U.S. states, with the  PHEV unlikely to reach many parts of the country for another year or more, according to internal documents and sources briefed on the roll-out plan.

Parent General Motors initially plans to focus on 11 so-called CARB states that have adopted the tough Zero-Emission Vehicle, or ZEV, mandate enacted by the California Air Resources Board. Those states, which also include New York, New Jersey and Oregon, account for the vast majority of battery-based vehicle sales.

The delay reflects a number of different factors, GM spokesman Kevin Kelly noting, “We’re just being more focused on where we have had the highest demand historically.” California, he said, currently accounts for 40% of Chevrolet Volt sales, “so that’s our primary focus.”


Audi Working Up 300+ Mile Battery for SUV

Audi hasn't said whether it will use long-range battery in a new SUV or an existing model like this 2016 Q7.

Audi has launched an effort to develop a battery that can deliver “more than” 500 kilometers, or at least 312.5 miles per charge. The technology would be used in an all-electric SUV, the maker says, though the technology could have application in other Audi vehicles.

The project involves Korean partners Samsung SDI and LG Chem, the latter already working on longer-range batteries with other manufacturers such as General Motors and Nissan.

The 2016 Chevrolet Volt will get a 40% boost in its battery-only range.

The second-generation Chevrolet Volt will deliver 40% more range in battery mode than the original version of the plug-in hybrid, the maker announced today.

At 53 miles per charge, the compact sedan will permit buyers to commute or run even more errands without using any gas, General Motors officials have suggested. They also hope to increase the appeal of the 2016 Chevrolet Volt by offering better performance and more interior space, the new plug-in now capable of seating five, rather than four like the original model.

“We listened to our customers,” Volt chief engineer Andrew Farah said ahead of a news conference at the annual Management Briefing Seminars, in Traverse City, Michigan. “They were very clear when they told us that they wanted more range, and a fun driving experience behind the wheel. We are confident that the 2016 Volt delivers both.”

The 2016 Volt will get 50 miles per charge, which is an increase over the previous generation Volt. Volt sales are down 46.1% this year.

General Motors recently cut the price and increased the range on its Chevy Volt hoping to stimulate sales. It slashed the price on the Chevy Spark EV as well.

Ideally it wants to sell the vehicles to add to the company’s bottom line, but the Detroit-based automaker is also way off track to meet its very public goal of having 500,000 vehicles on the road that use electricity in some form for propulsion by 2017.

Chevy Cuts Price While Extending Range of New 2016 Volt

The gen-2 Chevrolet Volt is designed to spend even more time operating in electric mode.

Chevrolet is once again cutting the price of its Volt plug-in hybrid – but this time, the $1,175 discount comes with the launch of an all-new version of the extended-range electric vehicle. The 2016 Chevrolet Volt will cost as little as $26,495 when federal credits are taken into account, and some states offer additional financial incentives.

And, at the same, time, the 2016 Chevrolet Volt will be getting a big boost in range, the compact battery car expected to deliver an EPA-rated 50 miles in electric mode alone.

Bolt and Volt Will Share Chevy Showrooms, After All

It may be a bit confusing, but Chevrolet will be sticking with the name “Bolt” when it launches its 200-mile battery-electric vehicle next year. Following the unexpected debut of the electric model, the maker had been debating whether to come up with an alternative less like the name of its current plug-in hybrid, the Chevrolet Bolt.

Despite sluggish sales of battery cars at a time when gas prices have plunged to lows not seen since before the Great Recession, the General Motors brand is convinced there’s a future for the technology, Chevy officials have stressed.

“Since unveiling the Bolt EV three months ago, the name has quickly become associated with Chevrolet,” the company said in a statement. “Therefore, we will use the name when the vehicle goes into production. The Bolt EV is a significant statement of Chevrolet’s commitment to electrification and the name suits this game-changing electric vehicle designed for attainability, not exclusivity.”

General Motors sparked plenty of interest when, in 2010, it launched the world’s first mass-market plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle, the Chevrolet Volt. But after an initial surge, sales have waned over the last several years, falling a precipitous 30% last year. So, Chevy can only hope that potential buyers will plug back in with the launch of an all-new, second-generation Volt at this week’s North American International Auto Show.

The 2016 model was designed to address many of the weaknesses of the original car, including its buzzy engine, sluggish performance and cramped interior. But it also will deliver significantly more range – an estimated 50 miles per charge – and improved fuel economy.

And while the maker has yet to announce specific numbers, there is widespread speculation the 2016 Chevrolet Volt also will see a price cut putting it more into the mainstream of the compact American sedan market.
