The Audi R8 Spyder rolls into the NY Auto Show.

There are plenty of folks who love the Audi R8, and that includes Scott Keogh, the brand’s U.S. CEO. Audi was little more than an asterisk on the sales charts. Today, it’s a force to be reckoned with, sales growing 250% since the launch of the sports car nearly a decade ago.

While it might target a small niche, “The R8 put Audi on the map,” says industry veteran Keogh, helping the brand “put old luxury on notice.”

Audi has three versions of the R8 on its stand at the New York International Auto Show this week, including the daunting, 610-horsepower Audi R8 V10 Plus, as well as the R8 LMS race car. There’s also the brand-new member of the family, the 2017 Audi R8 Spyder.

Audi Powers up the R8 e-tron, Takes Aims at Tesla

Tesla isn’t the only automaker out to prove that battery-cars can deliver serious levels of performance. After a long delay, Audi has revealed an all-electric version of its newly redesigned 2-seat sports car, the R8 e-tron.

Making its debut alongside the new, gas-powered R8, the e-tron tucks a T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack into the sports car’s low body, along with two electric motors. The combination not only can launch from 0 to 60 in less than four seconds, but it can deliver as much as 280 miles of range per charge, nearly triple what most of today’s electric vehicles can manage.

Likely to be priced above the rest of the new R8 line-up, Audi says it will produce a small number of largely hand-built e-trons “upon customer request” this coming year.

Audi's new R8 gets a freshened look on the exterior, but under the hood is where the biggest transformation takes place.

Audi’s strikingly stylish R8 supercar is up for a remake, and while there will be a number of visual updates to 2016, the big news is added performance. The R8’s big V-10 will now churn out 610 horsepower and launch it to a top speed of 205 mph, making it a serious challenger to exotic brands like Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini

Perhaps best known as the car of choice for silver screen superhero Iron Man, Audi has launched a steady stream of enhancements since introducing the original R8, taking advantage of the company’s successful racing program.

Audi plans to reveal the rest of the 2016 R8 in Geneva.

Audi’s updated R8 sports car is about to hit the bright lights – quite literally – when it makes its debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.

The German luxury maker is offering a first, tantalizing teaser image of the 2016 R8, and while it’s difficult to see just how much the mid-engine sports car changes overall, there’s big news in that headlight peeking out from under the covers. Among the many new technologies Audi promises to introduce, the R8 will be getting optional laser high-beams.

“The special appeal of laser lighting,” explains Audi, “is that it uses high‑intensity laser diodes, which generate a lot of light energy from a very small component. Compared to LED high‑beam headlights, laser high‑beams attain nearly twice the lighting range.”

Audi Unveils Updated R8

Audi will offer a new V10 Plus version of the R8 supercar for 2013.

Hard to imagine but it’s been a full six year since Audi first pulled the covers on the R8 supercar – which means it’s time for some changes for the new model-year.

The updated 2013 Audi R8 is making its debut at the Moscow Motor Show, apparently so all those oligarchs can look good stuck in the Russian capital’s endemic gridlock.  Should they finally get free of traffic they’ll be able to clock some serious performance numbers with a 2-seater that sleeker, leaner and – with the addition of the new R8 V10 PLUS model, a fair bit faster.

The 2013 Audi R8 gets only minor exterior tweaks, including redesigned front and rear bumpers, new LED headlamps, a new rear diffuser, revised exhaust pipes and an updated R8 logo.

What should really matter to Audi aficionados will be found under the skin.  That starts with some significant gearbox changes.  The unloved six-speed electrically-shifted manual goes away, with few regrets.  In the base R8 424-horsepower V-8 it will be replaced by a seven-speed S tronic automatic.  And a new twin-clutch automated manual is offered as an option, as is a six-speed stick.

Germany's secret weapon: the Audi R18.

It started back in 2000 when the first Audi prototype showed up at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.  At a race where sports car manufacturer Porsche has won 16 times and Ferrari nine times, the upstarts from Ingolstadt came with a serious race car, the turbocharged gasoline-engined R8, and took first, second and third the first time out.

In the years since, the Audi R8, R10, the R15 diesel and now the new R18 diesel have won the race nine more times.  They took a year off in 2003 when, at the suggestion of management, the Audi race car was reconfigured into a Bentley coupe, and the Bentley took first and second using Audi engines.

In 2004, the R8 returned and took first, second, third and fifth.  The following year, the updated and heavily restricted R8 won again, with Danish driver Tom Kristensen winning his seventh Le Mans in a row.

The world of sports car racing changed forever in 2006 when Audi showed up with its new R10 race cars, powered by 5.5-liter turbocharged diesel engines.  Diesels?  At Le Mans?  Yes.  Using specially distilled diesel race fuel, the Audis qualified first and second and beat the closest gasoline-powered car by four LAPS, owing to the diesel’s reliability, huge torque off the corners, and far fewer stops for fuel.  The winning Audi diesel covered 3164 miles in 24 hours, at an average speed of 131 mph.

Audi Sets $196,800 “Base” Price for New R8 GT

Audi R8 GT: lighter, more powerful, faster and, yes, more expensive, too.

You’ll soon be able to buy the Audi R8 in three flavors: fast, faster and, “Oh, my god.”

But getting close to the 200-mph mark will nudge you ever closer to a $200,000 price tag.

When the slick 2-seater came out, a few years back, critics found little to, well, criticize, other than the lack of oomph from the stock 4.2-liter V8.  They didn’t have long to fret, however.  The addition of a 5.2-liter V10 – the same basic powerplant from the Audi GT3 LMS race car – bumped the pony count from 420 to 525 horsepower.

Fun to Read!

Needless to say, that wasn’t quite enough for some folks who have gotten caught up in the numbers game.  So, while the new R8 GT isn’t quite in the same rarified air as the new, 700-hp Lamborghini Aventador, it still has enough to challenge the best of the supercar breed by adding yet another 35 horsepower – 560 in all.

Audi is the latest company to step up its efforts to improve its technical competence in production of carbon fiber.

Add Audi to the growing list of automakers that are exploring carbon fiber to help improve fuel economy and emissions.

But interestingly, two other marquees within the extensive Volkswagen empire are already working on their own separate carbon fiber projects.

“Fiber-reinforced polymers offer weight and strength advantages, which we have already put to use in the Audi R8 and the Audi RS 3, for instance,” said Rupert Stadler, chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. “We want to use these advantages for high-volume production as well, and therefore the focus of our partnership with Voith is on specific car projects.”

When Audi says, “Charge,” it means it in more ways than one, if the 2012 e-tron is any indication.  That’s the German maker’s new battery-electric sports car, a low-slung two-seater that promises to deliver performance to match Audi’s gasoline-powered R8 supercar.

The long-rumored BEV made its debut, Tuesday at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, but expect it to return to the show within the next few years, for senior Audi officials promised to put the e-tron into “serial production” by 2012.

“This is a genuine, high-performance sports car,” said Audi’s global technical chief, Michael Dick, “and not an austerity concept.”  The latter comment was a thinly-disguised shot at the Volkswagen luxury division’s competitors, many of whom are also planning battery cars of their own, but ones that will deliver limited range, marginal performance and relatively few conveniences.

There’s something special about feeling the wind blow through your hair, but the feeling will likely be more like a hurricane should you stomp on the throttle of the 2010 Audi R8 5.2 Spider.

The long-awaited convertible version of Audi’s hot-selling sports car makes its formal debut, Tuesday morning, at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, but the German maker provided a sneak peek during a background briefing for more than 2000 of the brand’s closest friends – TheDetroitBureau.com among them.
