The first good look at the 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS, the original coupe-like sedan.

We’ve been seeing next-generation CLS prototypes with lots of camo for some time now. Today, we’ve caught the 2012 CLS on a photo shoot wearing almost no disguise at all!

From our photos, it quickly becomes apparent the CLS is in for quite a change. The front end is much more angular and aggressive. We’ve also realized that, when looking at camouflaged prototypes from earlier in the year, CLS prototypes were wearing an extensive front clip that was completely fake!

Towards the back, the CLS is getting significantly bigger fender flares, giving the Mercedes hips that look almost Bentley-like. A much flashier pair of tailights are easy to see as well.

Today we’ve caught another sign of new life at Chrysler with these first photos of a 2012 Dodge Durango prototype.

Code-named “WD,” the replacement for the current, truck-based Dodge Durango will be sharing a more car-like unibody chassis with the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the 2011 Mercedes ML class. Not all things will be equal as we expect the Benz to sport higher-end running gear than its Chrysler brothers. Fiat may also launch a vehicle on this chassis sometime in 2012-2013. One thing you WON’T see on this chassis is a Chrysler Aspen variant.

Infiniti may have “revealed” the new M in 3D virtual reality earlier this year, but never mind that, we have the REAL thing!

On my morning run today, I unexpectedly stumbled upon two pre-production testers. No clay models here – these were as real as it gets. Sporting cues from the Essence Concept, nothing is left to the imagination with this test car, as only a few poorly placed pieces of tape cover the badges.

A first good look at the U.S. version of the new subcompact, the 2011 Ford Fiesta.

Ford has recently launched its  new Fiesta Sedan in China, but we caught the U.S. spec version – and – for the first time – a good look at the unique (North American-spec) grille and front fascia. It also appears that the Fiesta sedan will have different front and rear bumpers from those seen on the cars it has shown elsewhere, as well as minor interior changes.

The Fiesta will finally put Ford back into the subcompact market, which company officials have said is a critical step in their switch from a heavy emphasis on light trucks to a more fuel-efficient passenger car model mix.

Late to the party, the Korean carmaker intends to finally get into the gasoline-electric market with the launch of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, captured here by our spy photographers.

Late to the party, the Korean carmaker intends to finally get into the gasoline-electric market with the launch of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, captured here by our spy photographers.

The Sonata, codenamed “YF,” was penned at Hyundai’s design studio in Irvine, CA. We were told there was heated debate in the boardroom over the styling direction of the new Sonata. The final design sports a much sleeker, coupe-like roofline.

We’re hearing that the hybrid model of the Sonata, shown here, will use lithium polymer batteries instead of the often discussed lithium-ion. The polymer batteries are said to be more durable and cheaper to make. Besides obvious clues (our quick sneak-peek under the hood and small exhaust pipe) – this test group consisted of Hyundai’s well-known hybrid battery specialists, and the Sonatas were tested alongside a variety of competitive hybrids.

While the regular Sonata should start production for the U.S in the summer of 2010, the hybrid model should follow sometime in 2011 – likely as a 2012 model.

Spy Shots: Devon GTX Prototype on the Track!

First look at the new American-built supercar.

Sometimes hiding in plain sight is the best way to get spy photos, and that’s exactly how we managed to photograph this Devon GTX undergoing aerodynamics testing. Patience and persistence also play a big role: besides the obvious, we waited until the Devon GTX was packed up and the hauler was heading out-of-town before we offered these revealing images.

This is the VERY FIRST time that the Devon GTX has been seen, driven on a track and photographed!! Any and all previous “photographs” were actually computer-generated imagery (CGI) and no concepts have ever put on display, but our photos are the real thing and prove that the production Devon will be true to the concept rendering!

In addition, this is the first evidence that Devon is using up-and-forward doors and that it sports a glass roof and carbon-fiber body. Other observations include a full belly pan and – although we were unable to discover exactly what’s powering the Devon GTX, we did overhear the engineers bragging about the 650-horsepower.

This test date must have been an important one, as we spotted company, Scott Devon, company founder, and British LeMans champion Justin Bell driving the soon-to-be American-built supercar.

GM 6.6-liter Duramax Diesel

Diesels may be in the dumps when it comes to light-duty pickup trucks but things are starting to get hot in the heavy-duty segment.  New federal emissions rules set to take effect in 2010 have sent Ford and General Motors back to the drawing boards (the current Dodge Ram HD and its 6.7-liter Cummins I6 already meets 2010 emissions).

We’ve previously reported about Ford’s upcoming 6.7-liter eight-cylinder in-house replacement for the current 6.4-liter V-8 Power Stroke, code-named “Scorpion.” Now, we’ve received new information from sources about GM’s updated 6.6-liter Duramax V-8, plus this close-up spy photo.

General Motors uses three letter identifiers to designate each new iteration of Duramax. The current 2007-10 ‘LMM’ Duramax is designed to run on ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel and work with a diesel particulate filter to cut soot emissions by 90 percent from 2006 levels. The LMM replacement is said to be called the ‘LML’ Duramax.

Once again,  we caught up with Honda’s upcoming Accord-based crossover – not far from where we originally shot it earlier in the week, but this time we managed to get a bit closer! Honda fans have been asking lots of questions and speculating, and we think this newest set of photos will satisfy most.

Based on a modified Honda Accord chassis, this all-new crossover vehicle will start production in September of this year at the East Liberty factory in Ohio. The Accord CUV will slot in-between CR-V and Pilot and will look to do battle with Toyota’s new Venza CUV. It will likely be called the CrossTour.

These early-production prototypes are powered by Honda’s 3.5 i-VTEC engine, but  earlier this year, we observed powertrain mules testing alongside a 2010 Acura RDX. We also noticed these mules accelerating rather briskly, so the 2.3L, four-cylinder turbo motor from the RDX may also have a chance of making it into the Accord CUV.

Lift the camouflage and you'd see the bones of Maserati's first-ever hardtop convertible.

In the words of our photographer:

Maserati’s most exciting car at present – the GT – will soon be given a beautiful sister, and she’ll be walking around topless at times: Spotted at the German Nürburgring earlier today was this prototype of a Maserati Spider.

Judging from the heavy camouflaged packed onto the car and in par with the brand-new Ferrari California, we reckon the Spider will be given a retractable metal roof rather than a conventional canvas top. Competitors like the Aston Martin DBS, on the other hand, will not follow this trend and will soon come with a traditional soft top. A Porsche 911 Cabrio, too, will never be built with anything but a canvas roof.

Different from the new GT Spider’s predecessor, the new model will apparently come as a 2+2- rather than a pure 2-seater. Engine and mechanics of the Maserati Spider won’t change compared to the coupe. We expect the cabriolet to debut at the 2009 Geneva Show.

Spied: 2010 Ram Hemi Hybrid

Diesel on-hold, but Dodge has a hybrid truck on tap.

While the Dodge Ram Diesel has been delayed, a Dodge Ram 1500 Hybrid is on the schedule for 2010 -- if Chrysler survives its current financial problems.

While the Dodge Ram Diesel is delayed, a Ram 1500 Hybrid is scheduled for 2010 - if Chrysler survives.

A diesel-powered Dodge Ram 1500 has been delayed, but the hybrid Hemi version is definitely happening for 2010. Our spy photographers caught it running undisguised in public during final testing.

The so-called two-mode hybrid powertrain was co-developed with GM, Mercedes and BMW. It’s the same setup found in the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra gas-electric hybrid pickups.

GM is supplying Chrysler with the advanced two-mode transmissions that will be used. The electrically variable transmission houses two 60kW electric motors that can power the truck on their own up to about 25 mph, depending on driving conditions. As the multi-displacement 5.7-liter pushrod Hemi V-8 gas engine kicks in, the electric motors will seamlessly support it, individually or in tandem, at low and high speeds, helping the engine enter fuel-saving four-cylinder mode sooner and stay in it longer to achieve maximum gas mileage. Regenerative braking is used to capture energy that would normally be lost during braking or deceleration. The energy is stored in the batteries for later use.
