        Old Republic Insurance Overview

Old Republic Insurance Group has been in business since 1935 and is headquartered in Pennsylvania. Along with providing auto insurance, the company sells extended warranties through its vehicle service contract arm, called Old Republic Insured Automotive Services.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) gives Old Republic Insurance an A+ rating for its business practices and timely responses to any customer complaints. Additionally, the company has an A+ financial strength rating from AM Best, which shows it has a superior ability to meet customer claim obligations.

Overall, we give Old Republic Insurance 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. See a breakdown of this rating below, and read on for more information about how Old Republic Insurance performs in each of these categories.

Old Republic Insurance Extended Car Warranty Coverage

Old Republic Insurance offers five levels of extended warranty coverage as well as a specialized program for pre-owned vehicles. The company can protect vehicles with up to 150,000 miles on the odometer, and its Total Vehicle Protection options for new and used cars include:

        • Basic Plan: Covers your engine, transmission, transfer case, drive axles, and seals and gaskets
        • Select Plan: Covers all that’s included in the Basic Plan as well as your steering, suspension, air conditioning, brakes, electrical and chassis hardware
        • Deluxe Plan: Covers all that’s included in the Select Plan, but many more electrical systems are also covered, like your sunroof motor and audio equipment
        • Supreme Plan: Acts as a bumper-to-bumper extended warranty and covers everything except maintenance parts and non-factory installed equipment
        • Supreme Wrap Plan: Acts as a bumper-to-bumper extended warranty without any powertrain coverage included, which is good for vehicle owners whose factory powertrain coverage lasts longer than their factory bumper-to-bumper coverage

Here are the coverage lengths that correspond to vehicle type:

        Vehicle TypeMaximum Coverage Limit
New vehicles7 years or 100,000 miles
        Pre-owned vehicles5 years or 60,000 miles

Old Republic Insurance’s Wrap Coverage lasts for 10 years or 100,000 miles.

MVP Protection Plans for Pre-Owned Vehicles

This type of Old Republic Insurance coverage protects pre-owned vehicles specifically. Three coverage plans, which can extend up to 5 years or 60,000 miles, include:

        • Regular MVP: Protects your engine, transmission, transfer case and drive axles
        • Premium MVP: Protects the systems outlined in the Regular plan, as well as your cooling, fuel, steering, suspension, air conditioning, brakes, electrical, and seals and gaskets
        • Ultra MVP: Protects the systems outlined in the Regular and Premium plans, but with additional components covered within each system

        Additional Perks

Old Republic Insurance extended warranties are both transferable and cancelable. In most states, the company’s service agreements come with a “free look” period, which allows you to cancel the coverage within that time frame for a 100% refund.

These additional perks also come with Old Republic Insurance coverage:

        • Towing
        • Rental car reimbursement
        • Trip interruption reimbursement up to $100 per day for a maximum of three days
        • Roadside assistance up to $50 per incident for fuel delivery, flat tire assistance, battery service and lockout assistance
        • Tire road hazard coverage up to $200

Old Republic Insurance’s rental car reimbursement operates on a sliding scale depending on your repair cost. You can get as little as $50 if your repair is under $500 and up to $250 if your repair costs over $2,000. These limits likely correspond to how long Old Republic Insurance estimates the repair will take.

        What’s Not Included

Like every extended warranty, Old Republic Insurance contracts don’t cover everything. Examples of items that are not covered by Old Republic Insurance vehicle service contracts include:

        • Maintenance parts and services
        • Non-factory installed parts
        • Adjustments and cleanings
        • Batteries
        • Fluids
        • Exhaust system
        • Glass
        • Lights
        • Shock absorbers
        • Wiper blades
        • Damage from collisions or the environment
        • Damages due to vehicle neglect

Cost of an Old Republic Insurance Extended Warranty

The cost of an Old Republic Insurance extended warranty is based on a few different factors, so there’s no standard pricing for all drivers. Like with auto insurance, personalized quotes are typical in the extended warranty space.

Factors that will raise or lower Old Republic Insurance warranty costs include:

        • Vehicle make, model and age: Older, high-milage, luxury and less-reliable vehicles all cost more to cover.
        • Coverage level: More comprehensive plans, like the Supreme Plan, will cost more than basic coverage.
        • Contract length: A longer contract will generally cost more than a shorter contract.
        • Deductible: Often, a lower deductible will result in a higher premium cost and vice versa.

Customer reviews mention a $50 deductible, but double-check what other deductibles are available to you based on the plan you purchase.

How to Get a Quote and File a Claim

To get a quote from Old Republic Insurance, you’ll need to reach out to the provider either through email or by telephone. The provider has a specific email address for its sales department, but when you call the company’s general line, it’ll take a series of voice automations before you reach a representative. Make sure to have your vehicle identification number (VIN) handy, as well as be prepared to provide your vehicle’s make, year and model.

        File a Claim

If you experience a mechanical breakdown, you can have a covered repair done at any authorized repair facility in the U.S. or Canada. You’ll need to contact Old Republic Insurance for authorization before having any repair work done, however. According to the provider, all parts and labor (and in some cases, sales tax) are covered.

If you break down outside of Old Republic Insurance’s normal business hours, the provider allows for emergency repairs up to $500. With an emergency repair, you’ll authorize the work yourself, pay the mechanic out of pocket, and have Old Republic Insurance reimburse you after the fact.

Old Republic Insurance Extended Warranty Reviews

When deciding on an extended auto warranty provider, it helps to take a look at what real customers have to say. Despite Old Republic Insurance holding an A+ rating from the BBB, the company has mixed reviews from customers.

Here’s a snapshot of what customers are saying about Old Republic Insurance:

        Positive Customer Reviews

“Very pleased with this company. My car had a transceiver go out and was out of commission for several days. The company held up their end of the bargain and paid for repairs and also allowed for a rental [minus the] $50 deductible.”

        – James B. via BBB

        Negative Customer Reviews

“Awful experience with this company. Seemed that everything that went wrong with our two-year-old car was ‘just out of the coverage.’”

        – Steven S. via BBB

“Absolutely do not get a warranty with Old Republic, especially if you buy a different brand vehicle from what the dealership sells.”

        – Amber via BBB

Conclusion: Is Old Republic Insurance Worth It?

Old Republic Insurance offers comprehensive coverage plans that come with a few nice perks. However, the company has a low volume of customer reviews and a lack of online quotes, so you may be better off going with a more reputable extended car warranty company.

While we don’t think Old Republic Insurance is a bad option, we do think it’s important to consider your options.

        Methodology

The Detroit Bureau collects data from every major car warranty provider to formulate rankings of the best warranty companies. Our in-depth rating system takes into account coverage, pricing, transparency, customer satisfaction and ratings from industry experts. Each provider is given a weighted score in five categories, as well as an overall score out of 10.0.

We recommend auto warranty companies based on these rankings, but we also encourage you to perform your own research and compare quotes to find the best coverage.
