Many drivers choose to purchase certified pre-owned Hyundai vehicles for their affordable prices, and the Hyundai used car warranty ensures they’ll be of high quality, too.

In this article, we’ll discuss the Hyundai used car warranty protection you’re given as a secondary Hyundai owner, including the manufacturer’s certified pre-owned coverage. Because used cars are often nearing the end of the original factory warranty, we’ll also talk about how one of the best extended car warranties can make sure you always have peace of mind while driving.

To see how much an extended warranty would cost from our top recommended warranty providers, get a few free, personalized quotes above.

What Does a Hyundai Used Car Warranty Cover?

A Hyundai used car warranty covers all the components of the original factory warranty, just for shorter term lengths. Hyundai’s powertrain coverage decreases to 5 years/60,000 miles, and the remaining New Vehicle Limited Warranty transfers to the secondary owner.

Does a Used Hyundai Still Have a Warranty?

To better understand the Hyundai used car warranty, it helps to take a look at the manufacturer’s factory warranty. Most warranty coverage transfers from the original owner to subsequent owners, but some coverage does not.

If you purchased a used Hyundai from a private owner, the vehicle’s original powertrain warranty will decrease from 10 years/100,000 miles of coverage to 5 years/60,000 miles of coverage. Additionally, the roadside assistance benefit that comes with new vehicles does not transfer when the car is sold. On the bright side, however, the majority of the original Hyundai bumper-to-bumper warranty transfers almost one-to-one.

Hyundai used car warranty coverage includes the remainder of these protections:

        • 5-year/60,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty
        • 7-year/unlimited-mile Anti-Perforation Warranty
        • 1-year/12,000-mile Replacement Parts and Accessories Limited Warranty
        • 8-year/80,000-mile Federal Emission Defect and Performance Warranty
        • 7-year/70,000-mile California Emissions Control Systems Warranty
        • 10-year/100,000-mile Hybrid System Components

What is the Warranty on a Certified Pre-Owned Hyundai?

Used Hyundais can be sold as certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicles if they’re less than five years old with fewer than 60,000 miles on the odometer. The Hyundai used car warranty that comes with CPO vehicles is slightly different from the coverage that transfers if you purchase a vehicle from a private owner.

CPO vehicles, like standard used Hyundai models, come with the remainder of their original New Vehicle Limited Warranty. This means that if you purchase a CPO Hyundai Sonata that’s two years old with 30,000 miles on it, you’ll get an additional 3 years/30,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage. This rollover coverage is beneficial unless you purchase an older CPO vehicle with a soon-to-be expired limited warranty – especially since older, higher-mileage vehicles tend to break down more often.

With the CPO Hyundai used car warranty, you’ll also gain 10 years/100,000 miles of CPO powertrain coverage, which starts on the vehicle’s in-service date. This will cover your engine, transmission and drive axles, as well as certain hybrid and electric vehicle parts. Additionally, the CPO Hyundai used car warranty includes a separate 10-year/100,00-mile Hybrid/EV Battery Warranty.

Under these Hyundai used car warranties, repairs must be made at a dealership, and you’ll need to pay a $50 deductible per visit.

        Additional Perks

With the Hyundai CPO protection plan, you’ll also get 10 years/unlimited miles of roadside assistance from the car’s in-service date. This includes towing to the nearest Hyundai dealership, battery jump-starts, flat tire services and lockout services, as well as emergency gas delivery.

Additionally, if you need a rental car while your vehicle is in the shop for a covered repair, Hyundai will reimburse you up to $35 for a maximum of 10 days.

What is Not Covered by Hyundai’s Used Car Warranty?

The exclusions associated with the Hyundai used car warranty are fairly standard. For example, the following items and services are not covered under the manufacturer’s coverage:

        • Maintenance services like oil changes and tire rotations
        • Wear-and-tear items like wiper blades, air filters and brake pads
        • Damage caused by misuse, abuse or neglect
        • Damage caused by collisions or acts of nature

If you drive commercially, including for a rideshare or delivery service, Hyundai’s used car powertrain warranty won’t cover you in the event of a mechanical breakdown.

Be sure to check your owner’s manual or warranty booklet for a full list of covered and non-covered parts.

Do You Need Extended Warranty Coverage?

With older used cars, investing in extended warranty coverage isn’t a bad move – especially if your factory warranty is expired at the time you purchase your vehicle. You should also take the manufacturer’s reliability and typical repair costs into consideration when deciding whether a Hyundai extended warranty would be a good investment for you.

RepairPal gives Hyundai a 4.0 out of 5.0 rating for its reliability, placing it fourth out of 32 car brands rated. Using driver-reported data, RepairPal estimates that Hyundai owners spend an average of $468 annually on repairs. This is less than the industry-wide average of $652 per year, but that cost will likely increase with older cars.

Although Hyundai’s powertrain coverage is some of the longest on the market today, many common, expensive repairs wouldn’t be covered under the powertrain warranty alone, like a radiator fan motor replacement or a rack and pinion replacement. Given that Hyundai’s used car bumper-to-bumper warranty expires fairly early, this is something to think about.

Benefits of a Third-Party Extended Warranty for Used Cars

You can only purchase an extended warranty for your used Hyundai at the time you buy the car, which can make things difficult for drivers with issues down the road. A big draw for third-party providers is their flexible start dates. Rather than purchasing the extended warranty when you purchase the car, you can buy a coverage plan whenever suits you and your vehicle.

Third-party providers can also offer an extended warranty for cars over 100,000 miles. If you plan on keeping your used Hyundai for a long period of time, this can be a great option to ensure the safety and reliability of your car as it ages.

Our research team has examined every major auto warranty provider in the industry, taking a look at coverage levels, costs, customer reviews and more. We also collected real price quotes and evaluated the experience of working with each company’s representative. Based on this research, we find that Endurance, CARCHEX and CarShield are three companies worth considering for your extended Hyundai coverage needs.

        Methodology

The Detroit Bureau collects data from every major car warranty provider to formulate rankings of the best warranty companies. Our in-depth rating system takes into account coverage, pricing, transparency, customer satisfaction and ratings from industry experts. Each provider is given a weighted score in five categories, as well as an overall score out of 10.0.

We recommend auto warranty companies based on these rankings, but we also encourage you to perform your own research and compare quotes to find the best coverage.
