The GMC extended warranty is available for models with up to 80,000 miles. Is your vehicle eligible, or do you need to find a different provider?

We’ll get into the details of what GMC and other providers offer for extended coverage above. We’ve researched GMC and many of the best extended warranty companies in an effort to help you find the best options. Overall, CARCHEX, Endurance and CarShield are our top three recommendations. Each performs well in areas like customer service, industry reputation and coverage.

It’s best to get at least two to three quotes when considering an extended plan. See how much you would pay for coverage by getting free quotes form our top picks, and keep reading for all the details on GMC’s extended warranty coverage.

        GMC Extended Warranty Overview

With GMC, you actually have two options when it comes to extended coverage: the GMC Extended Limited Warranty or the GMC Platinum Protection Plan.

        GMC Extended WarrantyCoverage Terms
        Extended Limited Warranty5 years/60,000 miles
        Platinum Protection Plan2 years/24,000 miles to 5 years/60,000 miles

GMC’s extended factory warranty continues all of the coverage from the bumper-to-bumper warranty, and GMC backs this coverage itself. However, it only adds a couple of years of coverage.

After that, you can get a Platinum Protection Plan, which is GMC’s recommended vehicle service contract backed by AMT Warranty. We’ll go over both of these options in detail below.

        GMC Extended Limited Warranty

The GMC Extended Limited Warranty expands bumper-to-bumper coverage to 5 years/60,000 miles from the in-service date. Note that this extended warranty doesn’t add any coverage to the powertrain, corrosion or rust-through warranties.

This warranty is fully transferable to secondary buyers, and repair visits don’t require a deductible. Like the original bumper-to-bumper warranty, it doesn’t cover routine maintenance or wear-and-tear items.

Prices aren’t available online, but judging on how much a GMC Platinum Protection plan costs for the same length, the extended warranty might add $1,000 to $2,000 to your financing.

In many cases, extended factory warranties are actually backed and fulfilled by other warranty companies, just under the same brand name. With GMC, every item covered by GMC’s bumper-to-bumper warranty is covered by its extended warranty and backed by the factory.

That’s a plus. However, there are some downsides too, the first being you only get an extra 2 years/24,000 miles of coverage.

Another downside is you have to purchase this warranty at the time you purchase your car. You can roll the cost of this plan into your monthly payments, but that also adds a small amount of interest over the period of your loan.

        GMC Platinum Protection Plan

The Platinum Protection Plan is a vehicle service contract offered by GMC and backed by AMT Warranty. This plan may require a deductible of up to $100. Drivers have four choices for term lengths for plans beginning in 2020:

        • 2 years/24,000 miles
        • 3 years/36,000 miles
        • 4 years/48,000 miles
        • 5 years/60,000 miles

These terms start when plans are purchased. The Platinum Protection Plan is only available for cars with fewer than 80,000 miles. However, GMC drivers may still find other protection plans through AMT Warranty. The website does say a Silver Protection Plan is also available through dealers, but you’ll have to get in touch with a GMC dealer for details.

The Platinum Protection Plan doesn’t quite cover as much as GMC’s factory warranty, but it still covers a lot:

        • Over 1,000 parts including the engine, brakes, A/C and seals and gaskets of covered parts
        • Rental car allowance for $40 a day up to $280
        • Towing up to $150 after a breakdown
        • Lost key and lockout reimbursement up to $35 per occurrence
        • Trip interruption of $200 per day up to $800 per occurrence

GMC’s Platinum Protection Plan starts at $1,567 for 2 years/24,000 miles. We also pulled up a quote to add coverage to a 2018 Sierra 1500 (still under the 2018 GMC warranty). Here are the prices:

        GMC Warranty Coverage TermCost
        2 Years/24,000 Miles$1,566.55
        3 Years/36,000 Miles$2,188.80
        4 Years/48,000 Miles$2,607.75
        5 Years/60,000 Miles$2,803.45

Starting with a car that has 80,000 miles would mean the maximum mileage covered is 140,000 miles.

Is a GMC Extended Warranty Worth It?

GMC’s Extended Limited Warranty could be worth it if you want to extend the exact same factory coverage for a little while. However, it’s not free, and it doesn’t last very long. You could also go with a Platinum Protection Plan or find more affordable options from another company instead.

Recommended Third-Party GMC Extended Warranty Providers

One of the biggest drawbacks of the GMC extended warranties is the lack of options. There’s really only one choice for the Limited Extended Warranty and two for the protection plan (Platinum and Silver).

Maybe your car has a few miles on it and you just want to protect the powertrain. With GMC, you can’t do that. In contrast, most third-party warranty providers will let you pick between five or six different coverage levels, all the way from bumper-to-bumper to basic powertrain coverage.

For example, CARCHEX has five different plans:

        PlanCoverage
TitaniumBumper-to-bumper coverage similar to GMC’s extended factory warranty
PlatinumHighest level of stated-component coverage that includes hundreds of parts
GoldMid-tier coverage for all major systems on your vehicle – best for cars with 60,000 miles
SilverCovers the main systems on your vehicle
BronzeBasic powertrain coverage that includes the engine, drivetrain and transmission

Maximum mileage limits for third-party plans are often quite high as well – CARCHEX will cover some cars until the odometer reads 250,000 miles.

You might be wondering about the other perks that come with the GMC extended warranty like roadside assistance. Actually, third-party providers also offer a good number of perks, as well. For example, Endurance gives each customer a free year of Endurance Elite Benefits, which includes:

        • Roadside assistance
        • Collision discount
        • Total loss protection
        • ID theft protection
        • Key fob replacement
        • Tire replacement and repair
        • Endurance protect app

While you will have to pay for Endurance Elite Benefits after the first year, many other companies include perks for the entire contract. For example, all CarShield plans include roadside assistance, courtesy towing and rental car coverage.

Another thing to think about is the GMC extended warranty requires you to visit a GMC dealer for repairs. The Platinum Protection Plan will let you take your car to a third-party repair shop only if the dealer is inaccessible.

On the other hand, third-party service contracts let you go to any ASE-certified repair shop, which opens up your options and can also help you save money on portions of repairs not covered under warranty.

To get the best deal, be sure to call around and get quotes from a few different companies.

        GMC Factory Warranty Recap

GMC – General Motors Company – is an auto brand in the GM family along with Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac. Chevy and GMC vehicles from 2020 share the same warranty terms, so a Chevy extended warranty will be the same length as a GMC extended warranty, for example.

The GMC factory warranty includes several warranties and a couple of perks that go along with those warranties. Here’s a snapshot of the factory warranty:

        GMC WarrantyCoverage Details
Bumper-to-Bumper Limited WarrantyThis warranty covers repairs to the entire car due to defects in manufacturing for 3 years/36,000 miles,
except for a short list of exclusions.
Powertrain WarrantyThis warranty covers repairs to the engine, transmission and
drivetrain due to defects for 5 years/60,000 miles.
Corrosion WarrantySheet metal panels are covered against surface corrosion for 3 years/36,000 miles.
Rust-Through WarrantyGMC will repair or replace any sheet metal that has been corroded through
        with a hole for 6 years/100,000 miles.
Roadside AssistanceGMC owners get 24/7 roadside assistance coverage for the duration
of the powertrain warranty – which is 5 years/60,000 miles.
Courtesy TransportationGMC will provide alternate transportation when repairs are needed for 5 years/60,000 miles.
First Maintenance Visit(s) 2019 and 2020 vehicle owners get one free maintenance visit,
which includes an oil change, inspection and tire rotation.

GMC’s certified pre-owned program includes two warranties: a longer powertrain warranty for 6 years/100,000 miles and a bumper-to-bumper warranty for 12 months/12,000 miles.

Note that the CPO powertrain warranty begins at the original in-service date, while the bumper-to-bumper warranty begins at the time of the CPO purchase. Roadside assistance is also included until the powertrain warranty expires.

If you’re unsure if your car is still under warranty, you can do a GMC warranty check at GM’s owner center website.

        GMC Repair Costs

There are a few reasons why you might consider getting an extended warranty. An extended warranty can be a good idea if you want to keep your car for a long time, and an even better idea if you don’t have a good amount of cash set aside to pay for potential repairs.

Even if you want to sell the car in a couple of years, having an extended warranty can definitely boost the resale value since most contracts are transferable. You might also value the peace of mind that an extended warranty brings – you can focus more on driving and less on worrying about repair costs.

In the case of GMC, the company’s factory warranty period of 3 years/36,000 miles is pretty short. The 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty is average compared to other brands’ powertrain warranties.

Of course, breakdowns don’t happen every day. But as cars age, there’s a higher chance a breakdown could lead to a $2,000 or $3,000 repair. RepairPal gives GMC an average reliability rating and notes that most drivers spend about $744 per year to repair their vehicles. Here are a few repairs drivers encounter with GMC vehicles (via RepairPal):

        GMC RepairCost
GMC Sierra 1500 Radiator Fan Motor Replacement$880 to $1,221
GMC Sierra 1500 Steering Center Link Replacement$471 to $494
GMC Canyon Power Steering Pump Replacement$368 to $403
        GMC Canyon U-Joint Replacement$357 to $378

        Methodology

The Detroit Bureau collects data from every major car warranty provider to formulate rankings of the best warranty companies. Our in-depth rating system takes into account coverage, pricing, transparency, customer satisfaction and ratings from industry experts. Each provider is given a weighted score in five categories, as well as an overall score out of 10.0.

We recommend auto warranty companies based on these rankings, but we also encourage you to perform your own research and compare quotes to find the best coverage.
