More than 809,000 Nissan sport-utility vehicles in the United States and Canada are being recalled by Nissan North America Inc. because of a key problem that could cause its cars to unintentionally shutoff.
The models affected include the base 2016 through 2020 Nissan Rogue S and 2017 through 2022 Rogue Sport S.
The problem stems from the car’s key fob, which opens like a jackknife. According to Nissan, when inserted into the ignition, an internal pivot of the key fob can weaken over time and fold while the car is being driven.
This is particularly possible if a motorist has a bulky keychain with accessories on it. If the key is touched or jostled, the car could be inadvertently shut off. Other Rogue and Rogue Sport models have a push button starter and are unaffected.
“If the vehicle is driven with the key in the collapsed position, contact with the key fob by the driver could inadvertently turn the vehicle off while driving, increasing the risk of a crash,” Nissan said.
A fix isn’t available — yet
According to paperwork Nissan sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, no solution to the issue has yet been developed. NHTSA claims that Nissan dealers will offer a free fix as soon as one is available, which should be available by summer.
The automaker is unaware of any accidents or fatalities brought on by the problem.
Nissan notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the voluntary recall earlier this month. In March, Nissan will begin notifying owners of the affected automobiles.
