Seems like everyone’s “movin’ on up,” to borrow a line from a famous ’70s-era television theme song when it comes to their sport-utility vehicles. Toyota became the latest, teasing its new Grand Highlander coming for 2023.

The Highlander has been a big success for the Japanese automaker since it was introduced in 2001. It helped the brand move into the then, growing segment of the business with a quality entry that competed well.
“Four generations later and over 20 years of sales success, Toyota will do it again with the all-new, three-row Grand Highlander. Equipped for family adventures, the Grand Highlander will be the perfect addition to the line-up,” the company said in a release.
Not a radical change
Often when there’s a big move with a successful nameplate, it involves a dramatic or drastic reimagining of the vehicle. However, the teaser, which just shows the rear liftgate of the ute, suggests a more evolutionary update of its look.
While the look of the vehicle hasn’t changed, it’s probably safe to assume it’s going to follow the lead of other automakers that have looked to capture more upscale buyers, most recently Jeep with the new Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L as well as the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer.
The company didn’t offer any insight as to what kind up upgrades might be in store, but the aforementioned pair for vehicles are likely the blueprint for the Highlander’s glow up.
Toyota’s giving everyone a chance to see the unveiling of the new Highlander. Toyota’s YouTube channel @ToyotaUSA will host the unveiling on the eve of the Chicago Auto Show, Feb. 8, 2023.
