No vehicle holds its value more than the 2022 Toyota Tundra, according to Kelley Blue Book. It retains 70.2% of its value after five years.

If you’re looking for the vehicle that retains the most value after five years, buy a pickup truck.

That’s the message that comes through from Kelley Blue Book’s annual Best Resale Value Awards, which recognizes the 10 vehicles projected to retain the highest percentage of their purchase price.

While people refer to cars, trucks and SUVs as investments, they are not ones that usually return a profit. But these 10 cars hold more of their worth than others.

The vehicles that made this year’s list retain their value better than 95% of all other models, where the average is a mere 40 percent of the MSRP. Buying one of these vehicles means that the buyer of a $35,000 vehicle retains an extra $6,650 in value over five years — a meaningful difference.

Vehicles with the best resale value

2022 Ford Maverick XLT AWD front
The 2022 Ford Maverick retains nearly 60% of its value after 60 months.

Kelley Blue Book says the vehicles with the best resale value includes — in ascending order, the Jeep Gladiator which retains 56.1% of its sticker price after 60 months, followed by the Ford Ranger at 56.7%. Next comes the Ford F-Series at 57.3%; the Tesla Model X, 57.6%; the 2022 Toyota 4Runner, 58.6%; the Ford Maverick and Chevrolet Corvette tied at 59.5%; the Toyota Tacoma at 60.6%; the GMC Sierra, 60.8%; and the Toyota Tundra at 70.2%.

But Kelley Blue Book also broke down the best values by vehicle type, and the results may surprise you.

        Best SUV resale values

Among SUVs, Subaru ranks high in retained value, with the Subaru Crosstrek tops in retained value among subcompact SUVs, maintaining 52.3% of its purchase price. Its sibling, the Subaru Forester wins the crown among compact SUVs with 47.2% of its value remaining after five years and the Subaru Outback selling for 45.2% of its price among two-row midsize SUVs.

        2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06
No sports car retains its value more than the Chevrolet Corvette, worth 59.5% of its value when it reaches 5 years old.

The popularity of the 2022 Kia Telluride can be seen in its five-year value, holding on to 51.9% of its value among three-row midsize SUVs, while the GMC Yukon clings to 47.2% of its value, the most of any full-size SUVs. Not surprisingly, the 2022 Toyota 4Runner ranks highest in residual value among off-road SUVs after 60 months, retaining 58.6% of its original MSRP.

If you’re looking for something a bit posher, you’ll be interested to know that the subcompact Volvo XC40 is worth 39% of its value at year five, while the compact Mercedes-Benz GLB retains 41.1% of its value, the two-row, midsize Range Rover Velar with 36%, the three-row midsize Lincoln Aviator at 41.5%, and the full-size Lexus LX at 45.2 percent.

Cars with the best resale value

While cars account for a smaller and smaller slice of the market, they tend to be more affordable than their SUV counterparts. And given that American automakers have largely abandoned car production, the list is dominated by foreign manufacturers.

The Kia Telluride boasts a strong 51.9% residual value, a string showing that reflects its popularity.

The compact Honda Civic hangs on to 49.8% of its value, while its sibling, the midsize Honda Accord clings to 42.5% of its price after 60 months. The Chevrolet Corvette, the sole American car on the list, is still worth 59.5% of its original price, the highest among sports cars. The entry-level Lexus IS is worth 39% after five years, while the Lexus LS holds onto a mere 35% of its value.

        Pickups that hold their value

Compared with other types of vehicles, pickups hold their value more of their value. Consider the new Ford Maverick, KBB projects it to retain 59.5% of its value after five years. Even better is the midsize Toyota Tacoma, which has 61.7% residual after five years. The Toyota Tundra has an astounding 70.8% residual after 60 months, while the GMC Sierra HD is nearly as good at 63 percent.

        Other 2022 vehicle residuals

When it comes to hybrids, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid retains 50.1% of its value, while the Ford Mustang Mach-E has the best residual value among electric vehicles at 37.9%, while the Tesla Model X takes the win for electric luxury vehicles at 57.9%. The Toyota Sienna ranks tops in retained value for minivans at 50.3%.

Not surprisingly, Kelley Blue Book ranks Toyota as the best brand for resale value, while Lexus takes the win for luxury brand with the best residuals.

Only hold their value today? If you bought in the last year or so you should be able to make money on a car sales.
