As if there isn’t enough of a line already, Chevrolet could create an even longer wait list for the “C8” Corvette with news that it’s got two special versions on tap to mark the sports car’s seven decades on the road.
We’ll see Corvette 70th Anniversary Editions for both the “base” Stingray, as well as the new Z06 model later this year. But if you want the very first, you better make sure you’ve got plenty of cash in your bank account. The 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 70th Anniversary Edition will be auctioned off by Barrett-Jackson to benefit Operation Homefront.
“Passion for Corvette runs deep at Chevrolet and this anniversary is extra special because of the excitement and sales success we’ve achieved with the eighth generation of America’s iconic sportscar,” said Steve Majoros, vice president, Chevrolet marketing. “Even after 70 years, Corvette still makes hearts race and kids dream of the open road.”
Marking an important milestone
We’ve actually been waiting for official word about the Anniversary Editions since last week when someone inside Chevy let slip a few pics — intentionally or otherwise. But there’s more to the story than we originally expected.
For one thing, the bowtie brand is going to offer buyers a variety of different configurations to choose from, starting with the Stingray as well as the new Z06. And you’ll also get your choice of coupe or convertible.
What you won’t be able to do is spec out a Corvette in base trim. As would seem appropriate, the 70th Anniversary badges can only be affixed to high-priced trim packages — the Stingray 3LT or the Z06 3LZ.
The special editions all will have some things in common, starting with either Carbon Flash Metallic or all-new White Pearl Metallic paints. You’ll also be able to add stripes in several complementing colors.
The ‘Vettes will feature unique wheels with commemorative center caps and given a dark finish and edge red striping.
Inside, look for two-tone Ceramic leather GT2 or Competition Sport seats with red accents, as well as suede microfiber detailing on the seats and steering wheel.
Other details include Edge Red brake calipers, distinctive rear bumper protectors and, if you wish, you even get to match your new car with a set of custom luggage — which, of course, will feature red stitching and the 70th Anniversary Edition logo.
How to get No. 1
In case you can’t get online in time to score one of the special edition models, Chevy doesn’t want you to feel left out, however. As it points out in a news release, “Every single 2023 Corvette will have 70th Anniversary branding on the center speaker grille and rear window.”
The 70th Anniversary models will go on sale later this year. But someone with deep pockets will get to jump the line. The very first of the Z06 editions will be auctioned off at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale on Saturday, Jan. 29. The proceeds, Chevy explains, will benefit “Operation Homefront, a national nonprofit focused on building strong, stable and secure military families who can thrive — not simply struggle to get by — in the communities they’ve worked hard to protect.”
The one concern is that Chevy is facing some potential labor problems at the Bowling Green, Kentucky plant that assembles all Corvettes. The union local there last week rejected a company offer. There’s no immediate talk of a strike but the situation could get dicey if no compromise is found. A national strike by the United Auto Workers Union in autumn 2019 caused a delay in the launch of the eighth-generation Corvette and production has yet to catch up with demand.
This auction for the first 70 year edition has got to have more money than brains. This car cannot be driven because the mileage on the odometer must be no higher than 15 miles to retain its value.
