Cummins, Chrysler Extend Truck Diesel Deal

Multi-year deal okayed by new Chrysler management.

by Joseph Szczesny on Feb.03, 2010

This 2010 Dodge Ram 4500 features a 6.7-liter Cummins Turbo Diesel.

Cummins Inc. has signed a multiyear extension of its current agreement to supply Chrysler Group LLC with 6.7-liter turbodiesel engines for the automaker’s Ram Heavy Duty pickups and Chassis Cab trucks.

The announcement is a vote of confidence in Chrysler from a key supplier and both companies said the partners expected to expand on the 21-year-old relationship in the future.

Cummins has produced over 1.7 million Cummins turbodiesel engines for Dodge Ram Heavy Duty trucks since 1989.  More than 80% of Ram Heavy Duty truck customers purchase their truck with the Cummins “oil-burner,” which not only gives them significantly power mileage than conventional gasoline powertrains but also a lot more cargo-hauling torque.

Power to the Readers!

The first Cummins Turbo Diesel, in 1989, was a 5.9-liter V8 rated at 160 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Today the 6.7-liter Turbo Diesel delivers 350 hp and 650 lb-ft.

First Look: Renault Kangoo TomTom

A car and truck like this could save Chrysler or smart.

by Ken Zino on Jan.15, 2010

These mini-minivans have huge sales potential as the next "small" thing in my view. And makers are once again missing an opportunity.

Renault has just introduced a new TomTom Edition in Europe of its wildly popular Kangoo. It is the fifth special edition of the 2010 Kangoo range, which includes existing Access, Authentique, Expression and Privilège versions.

In France, Kangoo is the best-selling vehicle in its class in both the private car and light commercial segments.

Like the original Chrysler minivan, or the original four-door Jeep Cherokee, (both of which went unanswered for years as Chrysler printed money from their sales) these mini-minivans have huge sales potential as the next small thing in my view. And makers are once again missing an opportunity.

Here, there is an opportunity with far great sales potential for Chrysler than the cute — but hopelessly small for Americans – Fiat 500 model.

Here's minivan with far greater sales potential for Chrysler than a cute -- but hopelessly small for Americans – Fiat 500.

The Citroen Berlingo – shut out of the U.S. market — and the Fiat Fiorino, which is derived from it, are other variants of the type.

Here, there is an opportunity with far greater sales potential for Chrysler than the cute — but hopelessly small for Americans – Fiat 500 model that is coming next year.

How about a Fiorino derived camper version from the Jeep brand, as well as Chrysler luxury models and Dodge truck derivatives?

If Chrysler is to be a comeback company, it needs to gamble on such new things in the U.S. market. New decals,  which debuted on Jeep Wrangler models at the NAIAS, will only go so far.

A Kangoo could also easily be successful here as a Smart or Mercedes-Benz model – one personal, the other commercial. During 2008, Smart sold 24,622 copies of its pint-sized fortwo, a figure that plunged 38% in 2009. (more…)

Alfa’s non-Demise in U.S. Greatly Exaggerated

It is no go for Alfa Romeo, at least for a while, says Marchionne.

by Joseph Szczesny on Jan.14, 2010

Later, rather than sooner, for Alfa in the U.S.

Sergio Marchionne, the chief executive officer of Fiat and Chrysler, said one of Fiat’s key reasons for teaming up with the ailing Chrysler Group LLC was to allow the Italian automaker to return to the U.S. market after decades of absence.

“You’ll start to see the first Fiat cars in the United States late this year, Marchionne told the Automotive News World Congress, which is held this week in Detroit immediately after the North American International Auto Show.

However, when a member of the audience asked him about the long-rumored return of Alfa Romeo brand to the US, Marchionne indicated he was not in all that much of a hurry.

Ciao!

“I’ve told them they have to earn it,” said Marchionne.

Marchionne said Alfa has to be successful in its primary markets in Europe before it can begin dreaming about selling cars once again in the U.S.

In the interim, Marchionne is focused on the Chrysler business.

Chrysler Group August Sales Down 15%

However, Jeep posted strong sales of the Grand Cherokee.

by Ken Zino on Sep.01, 2009

Still some sales life in the Jeep brand?

Still some sales life in the Jeep brand?

Chrysler Group reported total U.S. sales for August 2009 of 93,222 units, an increase of 5% compared with a lackluster July, and a decrease of 15% compared with the same period in 2008.

Retail sales for August were 68,958 units. The company finished the month with 100,238 units in inventory, representing a 28-day supply, an abnormally low inventory level in a business where 60 days is the norm. Inventory is down 74% versus August 2008, when it totaled 380,560 units.

Overall, industry figures for August are projected to come in at more than 14  million for a seasonally adjusted annual selling rate (SAAR), far above the running rate of under 10 million for each previous month of 2009, which caused all automakers to trim production.

Like other automakers, Chrysler, it appears, was caught short with an inadequate supply of small cars — or more troubling for taxpayer owners, lack of consumer demand for the cars  it has and will have for the next year —  just as demand for fuel efficient cars surged due to federal government financed incentives under the CARS program, aka Clunkers.

However, its Jeep brand posted strong sales of the Grand Cherokee sport utility vehicle, up 62%, which resulted in the lowest year-to-date decline among the Group’s ailing brands, which was a -33% drop. The biggest loser in the same period was flagship Chrysler itself, off -51%, followed by Dodge at -37%.

“Chrysler Group had another strong sales month in August with the majority of Chrysler Group nameplates posting year-over-year or month-over-month sales improvements,” said Peter Fong, President and Chief Executive Officer for the Chrysler Brand and “Lead Executive” for the new Sales Organization at Chrysler Group LLC in a statement.

Chrysler said the federal CARS program gave a boost to the industry in August, and as a result, it  is increasing production by more than 50,000 units.

It was not immediately clear how the increase was figured since the company shut down virtually all of its production when it filed for bankruptcy last May, and only partially resumed it after Fiat took effective control in June after the court approved its U.S. Treasury backed sale.

Sales Results!

Sales Results!

The company has stopped holding sales conference calls for analysts and journalists, and is not releasing financial results thus far, even though U.S. and Canadian taxpayers financed its reorganization. The long-term viability of the company remains in question in the minds of many analysts.

Fiat Now Chasing Opel

Italian makers says it wants to buy - but does GM want to sell?

by Paul A. Eisenstein on May.04, 2009

He's got the whole world, in his hands...at least Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne would like to, and he could come a lot closer if he gets GM's Opel subsidiary, as well as a planned stake in Chrysler.

He's got the whole world, in his hands...at least Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne would like to, and he could come a lot closer if he gets GM's Opel subsidiary, as well as a planned stake in Chrysler.

Already set to gain a major stake in bankrupt U.S. automaker Chrysler LLC, the Italian “white knight,” Fiat SpA, may be riding in to sweep up another troubled automotive venture, in this case, General Motors Corp.’s European subsidiary, Opel.

Though there’d been suggestions that Fiat might want to purchase a piece of German-based Opel, which GM was willing to sell to raise some much-needed cash, it now appears that Fiat’s global-minded CEO, Sergio Marchionne, could be looking to buy Opel lock, stock and carburetor barrel.

That raises a number of questions, for one thing, whether GM would walk away from Opel entirely, and if so, how would it survive without the vast European empire it had created over the last seven decades?   What would Fiat have in mind for Opel, and how would it integrate the operation into its own automaking empire?  Perhaps most importantly, how would the heavily debt-laden Italian maker be able to afford the acquisition, considering its own financial challenges?

A new statement, issued by the Fiat Board of Directors, in Turin, confirmed “its full support for the initiative to be undertaken, over the next few weeks, by its Chief Executive Officer, Sergio Marchionne, to assess the viability of a merger of Fiat Group Automobiles (including the interest in Chrysler) and General Motors Europe into a new company.”

The deal, the board statement declared, would create a global automotive behemoth, with approximately 80 billion Euros ($106.9 billion) in annual revenues.

Earlier this year, former GM CEO Rick Wagoner announced the automaker would consider selling a large, and possibly controlling stake in Opel in return for a European government bailout that would keep the troubled operation in business.  But until now, Wagoner, his successor, Fritz Henderson and other senior General Motors executives had said they would maintain at least a major, if not controlling stake.

“We are talking to them, amongst other parties,” CEO Henderson on Monday told the Associated Press, “Not solely Fiat, but several parties who have an interest in making investment in our European business.”  (more…)

U.S. Treasury Department Flatly Rejects Chrysler Debt Proposal from Bondholders

“More constructive position” needed.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Apr.22, 2009

Treasury Sec. Tim Geithner has called for sharp concessions by Chrysler lenders. His department is rejecting a new proposal by debt holders.

Tim Geithner, U.S. Treasury Secretary, is flatly rejecting a new proposal by Chrysler debt holders.

“A more constructive position” is needed on the part of Chrysler LLC’s lenders, the U.S. Treasury Department is saying, in response to a proposal by banks, private equity firms and others who hold $6.9 billion in the automaker’s debt – and who could be the final obstacle to a deal that saves Chrysler from bankruptcy.

Late last month, President Barack Obama gave the flailing automaker 30 days to pull its financial house in order and complete a strategic alliance with its Italian white knight, Fiat SpA, otherwise Chrysler would be forced to file for court protection.  Few believe the U.S. maker would be able to emerge from bankruptcy and would most likely be broken up and sold in pieces.

To meet the White House mandate, and to win over Fiat CEO Sergio Marchione, Chrysler needs to complete a number of steps that include winning new concessions from its workers – both in the U.S. and Canada – and restructuring its heavy debt load.

Negotiators for the various lenders earlier this week proposed a complex agreement that would allow them to continue to hold $4.5 billion in secured debt, give them $1 billion in preferred equity in the new company formed by an alliance with Fiat, and another 40% of that company’s common shares.  Industry sources say the lenders also demanded a $1 billion investment by Fiat which, until now, had expected to gain a 35% or larger stake in Chrysler for no up-front cash. Chrysler to Taxpayers: $2 Billion More, Please

Total market will remain at 40-year low for next 4 years.

by Ken Zino on Feb.17, 2009

Nardelli putting a good face on grim reality.

Nardelli putting a good face on grim reality.

Chrysler is asking U.S. taxpayers for an additional $2 billion to its original $7 billion loan request made to the U.S. Treasury Department last December. More money is needed because its revised estimates assume the U.S. industry will have a Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate (SAAR) of only 10.1 million units for 2009, a 40 year low. The company also projects an average SAAR level of only 10.8 million units for 2009-2012. Payback of $9 billion in Chrysler loans with a premium would begin in 2012.

Chrysler said its submission demonstrates the company can survive. It is also pushing for an enhanced strategic alliance with Fiat, a controversial provision that gives off-shore Fiat access to the U.S. market for no exchange of capital. Significant progress meeting loan terms on competitive costs and increasing fuel economy were claimed. The United Auto Workers Union, dealers, suppliers and 2nd lien lenders’ concessions are “fundamentally” agreed upon. Details will not be provided until the Treasury Department releases them. Heath care and pension benefits to active employees and retirees would be maintained.

“We fully understand the need to adapt to significantly reduced annual U.S. sales … We believe that Chrysler LLC will be viable based on the updated assumptions contained in this submission,” said Chairman and CEO Robert L. Nardelli.

Harsh Reality Approaching for Chrysler

Automaker confirms it hopes to build Fiat products at Chrysler plants.

Facing harsh reality: Chrysler's Jim Press

Facing harsh reality: Chrysler's Jim Press

Chrysler is prepared to submit the updated version of its viability plan to its federal overlords, next week, which it hopes will demonstrate that the company not only can survive but actually thrive through the current downturn and beyond, Chrysler Vice Chairman Jim Press says.

“I can tell you we have accepted the fact that there is really is a harsh new reality in the auto industry,” Press said during remarks to the Economic Club of Chicago. “We are confident we have the right plan and we will see Chrysler, again, be a symbol of American innovation and craftsmanship,” he said.

“Everyone in the auto industry is being forced to rethink everything. The good news is that this is also the opportunity to fix a lot of things that should have been fixed a long time ago,” Press asserted.

The former Toyota executive also stressed that Chrysler is already well along in restructuring and repositioning its core business . “When we complete our viability plan, we will have eliminated 1.3 million units of installed capacity, or more than 30 percent, and reduced our fixed cost s by more than $3.8 billion,” he noted.

Fiat/Chrysler Marriage: Who Does What to Whom?

Deal may likely put Italians in charge.

by Michael Strong on Jan.23, 2009

Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne

Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne

The new partnership between Auburn Hills and Torino faces many questions. Not the least of which is: who is going to be in charge of what? Despite early protestations to the contrary, expect Fiat to
make sure it’s well-represented among senior leadership, including the top spot, at Chrysler-Fiat.

During a conference call with reporters yesterday Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne said he has “absolutely no intention” of running Chrysler and will have no direct operating responsibility, suggesting the two companies will act like a cooperative. “We have taken some precautions to make sure that we’re not ignored but that we don’t run the business,” Marchionne said.

Or will he?

One executive search firm employee, who deals extensively with Fiat in Europe and is expecting to see a huge influx of business in the U.S. suggested that Fiat’s history implies that Marchionne may very well end up helming the partnered companies despite his early statements.

“They like to have their people in places of importance and I could easily see Marchionne coming and running things at some point in the not-too-distant future,” said the executive, who asked to not be identified. If Fiat increases its share in Chrysler to 55%, Marchionne’s ascension to head of Chrysler “would almost be a certainty.”

The two companies are still conducting their due diligence as part of the non-binding agreement. The two sides are expected to complete their investigations before Chrysler submits its viability plan to the Obama administration on Feb. 17, Marchionne said during the call.

Opposition to Fiat Deal Growing — But Why?

Opinion: Deal is best option for both automakers and American taxpayers.

by Joseph Szczesny on Jan.23, 2009

Could Capitol Hill Critics Sink the Fiat Alliance?

Could Capitol Hill Critics Sink the Fiat Alliance?

When Tennessee Senator Bob Corker dropped in on the North American International Auto Show, earlier this month, he made a point of saying that Chrysler should either “merge or go away.” But now that the ailing automaker is ready to tie its fortunes to the fate of Fiat, suddenly, there’s a lot of moaning and gnashing of teeth from some quarters on Capitol Hill.

The question is whether the strong reaction could derail the proposed Chrysler/Fiat deal, or is simply the sound of political machinations.

There is an excellent chance that the noise was nothing more than an aberration driven in part by the embarrassing news that the now-ousted uber-boss at Merrill Lynch, John Thain, had used taxpayer money to purchase an expensive commode for his private bathroom, and another $100,000 or so on new chairs. Even people who normally stick up for rich white guys at all costs, like the people on Fox News, were appalled by the revelation of corporate excess.

The Chrysler – Fiat – Cerberus deal actually could wind up benefiting federal taxpayers.
