Ford Start Concept Makes U.S. Debut

“A car you can bond with.”

by Paul A. Eisenstein on May.19, 2010

A "car you can bond with"? The Ford Start concept makes its American debut.

Looking a bit like the love child of a crossover and the Volkswagen Beetle, the Start concept isn’t quite the sort of product you’d immediately expect from Ford, but the automaker is giving serious thought to putting it into production, says Ford’s global design chief, J Mays.

The Ford Start prototype is making its first appearance in the U.S., this week after a global debut at last month’s Beijing Motor Show.

News, Reviews and More!

The rounded coupe design of the minicar is quite a bit different from anything in the Ford line-up, though not entirely unexpected, say several of those familiar with design chief Mays – who helped develop the current version of the VW Beetle.

New Name, New Look For Chrysler’s Midsize

Sebring soon to make way for new Nassau.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Apr.29, 2010

The look of the 2007 Chrysler Nassau concept will influence the next-generation midsize sedan, but the 2012 Chrysler Nassau won't be its clone.

The “new” Chrysler is likely to look but sound a lot different from the old version of the automaker.  Indications of the grand transformation conceived by Chrysler’s new and secretive CEO Sergio Marchionne will start coming into view later this year.

In the months to come, the market will get its first look at new versions of both the Jeep Grand Cherokee, as well as the Chrysler Sebring.  The SUV will be new almost from  the ground up, but while the revised version of the midsize sedan is largely a re-skinning, it will also get a brand new name: Nassau.

The move is a critical one, say analysts, in cutting the company’s ties to failed past products.  Once a strong part of the Chrysler line-up, the most recent version of the Sebring was a market disaster, an ill-fated execution that emerged from a now-abandoned partnership with the struggling Japanese maker, Mitsubishi Motors.

First Look: GM EN-V Concept

Meet Jiao (Pride), Miao (Magic) and Xiao (Laugh).

by Ken Zino on Mar.24, 2010

No word on the price or production plans.

Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation  Group (SAIC) and its partner General Motors Company will show an electric vehicle concept at an exhibition in Shanghai at World Expo 2010 later this year.

So called, EN-V, short for Electric Networked-Vehicle, is a two-seat electric vehicle designed to “alleviate concerns surrounding traffic congestion, parking availability, air quality and affordability for tomorrow’s cities.”

Three EN-V models were unveiled today. They are said to represent three different characteristics that emphasize the “enjoyable nature” of future transportation – Jiao (Pride), Miao (Magic) and Xiao (Laugh).

These concepts will be showcased from May 1 through October 31 at the SAIC-GM Pavilion at World Expo 2010 Shanghai.

By combining GPS) with vehicle-to-vehicle communications and distance-sensing, EN-V concept can be driven manually or autonomously.

The Chinese auto market is the worlds largest and, unlike the U.S. and Europe markets it is still growing robustly.

EN-V’s platform has evolved from the Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility (P.U.M.A.) prototype developed by Segway, which debuted in April 2009 at the New York Auto Show.      (more…)

First Look: Mercedes-Benz F800 Style

The shape of things to come.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Mar.02, 2010

The shape of things to come for Mercedes, the F800 Style gives a hint of the maker's new design theme...and its green powertrain technology.

To get a sense of where Mercedes-Benz will be heading, in the years ahead, take a close look at the F800, which the automaker introduced at this year’s Geneva Motor Show.

The coupe-like concept vehicle gives a good hint of what’s being developed by designers and engineers down in Stuttgart, both in terms of styling and powertrain technology.  And the environmentally-friendly drivetrain, hinted the maker’s CEO, could show up “in the next-generation S-Class.”

Geneva News!

“This gives a good indication of (Mercedes’) overall strategy, going forward,” said Dieter Zetsche, during a media roundtable following the automaker’s news conference, at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.  The mustachioed executive noted that until now, Mercedes, “did not have comprehensive styling strategy for all of its steadily-increasing line-up.  The F800 Style will help correct that, though Zetsche quickly cautioned that, “This doesn’t mean there will be a fewer design that will be the same for all.”

First Look: Nissan Juke Crossover

The latest econobox with a funky and a tad exaggerated look.

by Ken Zino on Feb.10, 2010

Alternative or more of mainstream same?

Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) today confirmed that an all-new small crossover SUV, the Nissan Juke, will join the Nissan lineup in the United States in the fall 2010.

A European version of the Juke subcompact was revealed to the media at the Chicago Auto Show today.

Juke will make its global public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The North American version of Juke is scheduled to debut at the New York Auto Show in late March.

The compact Juke, said to be inspired by the Nissan Qazana concept car that debuted to as I recall mixed reviews at Geneva in 2009, is supposed to give customers a sporty crossover alternative to traditional small hatchback vehicles.

In North America, Juke complements other  Nissan crossovers — including the Nissan Murano and Rogue.

The usual claims for both “dynamic” styling and an “exhilarating” driving experience were made about the Juke.

Pricing will be keyhere as all makers need to sell unnatural amounts of small cars to meet impending 35.5 mpg CAFE regulations.

Nonetheless the new Juke (econo) box does have good stance, the now almost expected high waistline, and complex curves, which define the segment.

Whether it has a “coupe-like profile” we leave for you to decide, and — as always — our comments section is open for polite discussion.

The interior design has a wide center console that is said to take its inspiration from a motorcycle fuel tank.

Heard that before, too.

First Look: Cadillac XTS Platinum Concept

Bye, bye V8 power. Hello plug-in hybrid, and shared platform.

by Ken Zino on Jan.12, 2010

Another attempt to take competitors at the the heart of the Euro luxury market.

Cadillac has revealed its XTS Platinum Concept at the 2010 North American International Auto Show with much marketing hype and jargon, and barely a nod that the idea goes all the way back to the Catera of three decades ago and subsequent failed or weak forays into the European luxury segment.

XTS  looks to be a more promising attempt to take on the Germans.  But a lot can happen between now and next year when it will likely appear as a 2012 model.

XTS is  a so-called “five meter” car, as was the Catera, about the size of current STS or just over 200 inches in overall length, once considered the the optimum size for a European luxury car before BMW and Mercedes upped the ante with super-sided S-class and 7-series behemoths.

Cadillac has for the moment apparently abandoned plans for a new generation of rear-wheel-drive cars, and the XTS is derived from GM epsilon front-drive platform. Its a cautious design that is derived from the Cadillac 16 with its styling forms adopted to the different proportions, according to Robert Lutz.

Lutz says that the arts and science form language will continue to evolve but the edge line and prominent grille are keepers. Lutz told The Detroit Bureau that Cadillac understands the need to differentiate itself from other luxury brands, a work that is still very much in process.

As with the current Platinum Edition products, such as Escalade Platinum and the STS or DTS Platinum sedans, (all aging designs that need replacing with much more efficient and more exciting machines), XTS Platinum is over-stuffed with electronic technology, notably touch-screens that take control of vehicle systems far beyond the controversial navigation systems now common for their  role in deadly driver distraction accidents.

Cadillac and other makers are betting that customers will happily abandon traditional buttons, switches and knobs for touch screens, a potentially dubious assumption given the age of  Cadillac buyers and the problems with touch screens. Try  one with gloves on  for instance.

Nonetheless, the concept is the next generation mid-level sedan from Cadillac as GM continues internal debates about doing a huge new flagships car where in markets –  such as China — it’s thought that size does matter.

In addition, in keeping with every luxury marque’s need for fuel economy credits as the 2016 35.5 mpg standard looms near, at least one version of what remains a  large car will come as a plug-in hybrid.

The big sedan also will be without a V8 engine, using instead a smallish V6 powerplant, a nod to the inevitable demise of the V8 engine, which for six decades defined American automotive excellence, but now in a world of encroaching CO2 limits looks more like decadence.

First Look: Volkswagen New Compact Coupe

VW prepares product blitz.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Jan.11, 2010

The VW New Compact Coupe features a lithium-ion-powered full hybrid drivetrain.

You may have trouble keeping up with Volkswagen in the months to come.  The German maker, now one of the world’s largest, has been steadily ramping up its product offerings, in recent years, and promises the biggest blitz yet for 2010.

What company officials are describing as “power year” begins at the 2010 North American International Auto Show with the launch of the New Compact Coupe.

Concept!

Like the well-reviewed Volkswagen CC, the New Compact Coupe aims to create a stylish coupe-like exterior with “the interior roominess of a sedan,” says Walter da Silva, Volkswagen’s global design director.

Toyota Unveils Compact FT-HC, a Dedicated Hybrid

Prius to become a North American brand with multiple models.

by Ken Zino on Jan.11, 2010

The first new Prius model as it becomes a brand.

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today unveiled the FT-CH, a dedicated hybrid concept at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.

Smaller and projected to be less expensive than the mid-size Prius, the FT-CH is part of a larger is strategy to offer a wider variety of conventional hybrid choices to its customers, as it begins to introduce plug-in hybrids (PHVs) and battery electrics (BEVs) in model year 2012, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCHVs) in 2015 in global markets.

FT-HC at about $20,000 would be formidable competition for the emerging breed of plug-in electric vehicles with their limited range, such as the Chevrolet Volt which is expected to sell for twice that even given a lavish $7,500 taxpayer subsidy per unit.

The FT-CH was created at Toyota’s European Design and Development (ED2) center in Nice, France. Compared to Prius, it is 22 inches shorter in overall length, six inches shorter in wheelbase, and less than an inch in overall width.

Less expensive than the $25,000-35,000 Prius.

“We must re-invent it with powertrains that significantly reduce or eliminate the use of conventional petroleum fuels. One of many alternatives is through what is commonly called the electrification of the automobile. By far, the single most successful example of this has been the gas-electric hybrid,” said Jim Lentz, TMS president.

First Look: 2011 GMC Granite Concept

Taking the box up-market.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Jan.11, 2010

The GMC Granite concept may not be a segment-buster, but it's definitely a radical departure for the General Motors truck division.

Who knew square could be so hip?

There’s been a rush of new models that could best be described as “box-mobiles,” including the Nissan Cube, Kia Soul and Scion xB.  Could General Motors’ GMC truck brand be next to enter the fast-growing fray?  That’s a distinct possibility if you check out the maker’s new Terrain concept vehicle, which the automaker prefers to refer to as an “urban utility vehicle.”  It’s making its debut, this week, at the 2010 North American International Auto Show.

http://www.thedetroitbureau.com/about/subscribe

Auto News Now!

Granite’s goal, suggests Dave Lyon, GMC’s Executive Director of Design, “is to redefine GMC for a totally different customer.”  Read that, “young” and “hip,” but not necessarily the struggling, first-time buyer that Nissan, Kia and Scion have been targeting.

2010 BMW Electric ActiveE Concept

Set for a North American International Auto Show debut.

by Henny Hemmes on Dec.31, 2009

http://www.thedetroitbureau.com/2009/12/first-look-bmw-%E2%80%9Ce%E2%80%9D-class-concept/

A claimed 100 mile range to empty.

Conventional wisdom suggests that luxury automakers will have an especially tough time meeting ever-stricter emissions and fuel economy regulations.  BMW has made a history of bucking conventional wisdom, and if the ActiveE concept is any indication, it hopes to do that again.

Set to debut at the North American International Auto Show, in Detroit, this coming month, the  all-electric concept is based on the 1-Series Coupe that also will also take its bows at the Detroit Auto Show.   Following the strategy of the battery-powered Mini E, the ActiveE is the second model in Project-i, which was meant to explore the possibilities for bringing a zero-emissions vehicle to market before 2015.

http://www.thedetroitbureau.com/about/subscribe

Electrons!

Where the Mini E is a front-wheel-drive two-seater — the batteries occupying the place where conventional rear seats would go — the electric BMW offers space for four adults and even has a 7 cubic foot. truck, barely big enough for two golf bags. With a weight reduction similar to that of the standard Coupe, the EV should not only achieve emissions-free driving (if you neglect how the electricity is generated), but, the maker claims, deliver the sort of driver-oriented road manners BMW aficionados worship.  (more…)
