Cadillac Brings XTS Platinum Hybrid Concept to Beijing Motor Show

Caddy puts a green spin on its platinum sedan.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Apr.22, 2010

Platinum goes green? The 2010 Cadillac XTS Platinum Concept showing in Beijing uses a hybrid powertrain.

What was once an insignificant auto show on the edge of the automotive world is rapidly becoming a place where the industry’s leading players are pulling out all the stops.

So, no surprise to see General Motors’ high-line brand take what will soon become its flagship sedan to the 2010 Beijing Motor Show, here putting an even more exclusive patina on the new model in the form of the Cadillac XTS Platinum Hybrid Concept.

The “base” XTS made its debut a little more than three months ago, at the Detroit Auto Show.  The rear-drive sedan is, for the moment, still described as just a concept vehicle, but it is, in reality, due to hit market in 2012 as the replacement for both the old STS and DTS models that had served as Cadillac’s biggest and most expensive sedans.

First Look: Coupe-Like Mercedes-Benz Shooting Brake Concept

A wagon version of the next CLS?

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Apr.20, 2010

The 2011 Mercedes-Benz Shooting Brake concept shows the influence of both the CLS sedan and SLS sports car.

Few recent designs have had more of an impact on industry styling than the coupe-like Mercedes-Benz CLS.  The sweeping shape, blending elegant form with functionality, has strongly influenced any number of competitive offerings, from BMW to Volkswagen, as well as a variety of U.S. and Asian makers.

And it’s inspiring some creative efforts right inside Mercedes German design studios, as these images of the CLS-like Shooting Brake concept wagon suggest.  From a side view, the influence of Mercedes’ Coupe-Like-Sedan is immediately apparent, though there’s also a touch of the new, gullwinged SLS roadster in the nose of the new concept vehicle – which will make its debut at the upcoming Beijing Motor Show.

With the grand proliferation we’ve seen in the luxury market, in recent years, it’s increasingly common to see one maker life another’s design.  That happened with the swooping form of the original CLS sedan.  Here, however, Mercedes seems to be responding to arch-rival BMW’s new 5-Series Grand Turismo line – but rather than echoing the heavy and angular Bavarian shape, Mercedes has repurposed the sleek likes of the CLS.

This is clearly not the sort of wagon Baby Boomers grew up with, and with more and more manufacturers looking to revive the moribund segment in the U.S. market, this CLS Shooting Brake could shatter long-standing opposition to the wagon.  In other parts of the world, like Europe, this Shooting Brake concept could stretch already strong demand for two-box models even further.

Updated Maybach to debut at Beijing Auto Show

Daimler Ups the Ante in China.

by Joseph Szczesny on Apr.16, 2010

Though Daimler has tweaked the look with updates like the Zeppelin, there's been no major remake of the Maybach sedans since their 2002 launch.

Daimler AG plans to unveil an updated version of its big Maybach ultra-luxury sedan at the Beijing Auto Show later this month, Daimler Chief executive Dieter Zetsche revealed.

Cornered by irate shareholder during the company’s annual meeting in Berlin, Zetsche denied the suggestion that Maybach was a failure – or that it has even lost money. The fact, he claimed, is that every Maybach makes a “good contribution” to the Daimler’s bottom line.  An updated version of the Maybach, which gets the first really significant facelift since the brand’s 2002 launch, will make its debut at the Beijing auto show, said Zetsche.

While the U.S. remains Mercedes’ single most important market, the appearance of the Maybach in Beijing indicates just how important China has become to Daimler. The belief inside the company is that China and other emerging markets, such as Brazil and India, are the future.

China, in fact, is becoming the most important market for the S- Class, which is traditionally Daimler AG’s most expensive sedan – other than the extremely low-volume Maybach — and  the car line that makes more money for Daimler than any another other single vehicle in the Mercedes  line-up.

First Look: 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

Honey, I shrunk the SUV.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Apr.05, 2010

The 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a full 15 inches shorter than the standard Outlander SUV.

You hear a lot about downsizing, these days, what with the steadily increasing interest in fuel economy, but few makers have done more to shave inches and pounds than Mitsubishi has with the new Outlander Sport, which is making its public debut, this week, at the 2010 New York International Auto Show.

This entry-level compact crossover is far more car-like than the earlier Mitsubishi Outlander, and measures a full 15-inches shorter than the older SUV.  That alone should help improve mileage, but the 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport also introduces a technology that might be called “hybrid light,” which could help the Japanese crossover appeal to a younger, more green-minded audience.

Mitsubishi is counting on the 2011 Outlander Sport to “raise consumer opinion and consideration of our brand,” says Shinichi Kurihara, CEO of the Japanese maker’s sales subsidiary.  That’s something Mitsubishi has struggled with, in recent years, other sporty entries, like the Eclipse coupe, failing to reverse a long and steady sales decline.

Kia Uncovers a Quartet of New Products in New York – and Promises More

Korean maker aiming for big bump with 2011 Optima, exploring wagon options with Forte 5-door.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Apr.01, 2010

Kia has big expectations for its 2011 Optima midsize sedan, one of four new models unveiled at the New York Auto Show.

Aiming to build on its current momentum, Kia rolled out a quartet of new products at the New York International Auto Show – and promised more will soon follow, including the brand’s first hybrid-electric vehicle.

The most significant of the new offerings on display at Jacob Javits Center is the 2011 Kia Optima, an all-new update of the Korean carmaker’s midsize sedan.  Like its sibling brand, Hyundai, Kia has been putting an increasing premium on styling, and the ’11 Optima is no exception.

“This is a design to be benchmarked in the future,” declared Peter Schreyer, the German designer who has been leading the automaker’s move towards more expressive styling.  If anything, said several observers, after the news conference, the 2011 Kia Optima is more up-market and distinctive than the well-reviewed new Hyundai Sonata.

First Look: 2010 Hyundai Equus

Redefining Luxury, starting with the owner’s manual.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Apr.01, 2010

With the 2011 Hyundai Equus, the maker intends to take on the top luxury makers, including BMW, Mercedes and Lexus.

For a brand that was long a symbol of the most basic, cheap-and-cheerful products, Hyundai is doing a surprisingly effective job of redefining the luxury car market – a process it hopes to take a giant step further with the upcoming launch of the 2011 Hyundai Equus sedan.

Equus, making its debut at the New York International Auto Show, is a step up from the Hyundai Genesis sedan, the mid-luxury 4-door that, in January 2009, was named North American Car of the Year by a jury of 50 automotive journalists.  Designed to go head-to-head with high-line competitors like the BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the 2011 Equus will deliver all the standard features of a premium luxury sedan, from hand-finished wood and leather to its 608-watt, 17-speaker audio system.

As might also be expected of a Hyundai product, whatever the segment, price will also be a differentiator, Hyundai of America CEO John Krafcik hinting the final price for the 2011 Equus will come in “somewhere between $50,000 and $60,000. “  But perhaps the most intriguing selling point, he suggests, will be “innovative customer services to save our costumers time.”

VW Polo Named World Car of the Year

German maker’s subsidiaries take three of four awards.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Apr.01, 2010

Design Chief Walter da Silva collects the World Car of the Year Trophy for the Volkswagen Polo.

It came close to being a clean sweep for Volkswagen and its subsidiaries, the German maker capturing three of the four trophies handed out in the annual World Car of the Year awards – the VW Polo taking the namesake Car of the Year honors.

The World Car of the Year awards are the result of balloting by 59 automotive journalists from around the world – tasked with the difficult challenge of picking winners who have significance beyond individual regional markets, like the U.S., Europe or Japan.  Balloting is weighted to minimize the influence of any one region, organizers note.

That worked out well for Volkswagen, which grabbed the first of the awards handed out at the New York International Auto Show, the Green Car of the Year, with its subcompact Polo TDI diesel.  That was a doubly significant victory.  First, the VW offering was up against two hybrids, the new Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius, the world’s most popular gasoline-electric model.  Meanwhile, diesels are little more than an also-ran technology in the key American market.

First Look: 2011 Acura TSX Wagon

The wagon is back...maybe.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Mar.31, 2010

Acura is betting a new generation of buyers will embrace the 2011 TSX Wagon.

To paraphrase Mark Twain, reports of the death of the station wagon have been greatly exaggerated.  But so have stories predicting the comeback of that hallmark of the Leave it to Beaver era.

But that isn’t stopping Acura from giving one more try.  The luxury arm of Honda used the New York Auto Show to unveil a two-box version of its popular TSX model.  And the maker’s top U.S. executive, John Mendel, says he’s cautiously optimistic that changing tastes and lifestyles will help generate demand for the 2011 Acura TSX Wagon.

“We see growing potential for this type of alternative in the U.S.,” said Mendel, citing a forecast projecting that in the luxury segment, wagon sales will grow by as much as 40% between 2010 and 2014.

First Look: 2011 Infiniti QX56

“Arresting presence,” but will buyers agree?

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Mar.31, 2010

Infiniti hopes to improve upon the minimal success of its original full-size luxury ute with the new 2011 Infiniti QX56

Nissan had big plans for its two full-sized SUVs, the Nissan Armada and Infiniti QX56.  Unfortunately, potential buyers didn’t agree, turning a cold shoulder to the twin offerings.  Now, with an all-new version of the big luxury ute, the Japanese maker is giving it another try.

Describing the new look as an “arresting presence,” the automaker’s Executive Vice President Carlos Tavares pulled the wraps off the 2011 Infiniti QX56 at the New York Auto Show, Wednesday, describing it as “the future of luxury SUVs.”

Auto Show Central!

Once again, the market will have to decide, but there’s no question the 2011 remake is a substantially more distinctive offering than the original model.  That, at least in part, is due to the fact that the 2011 Infiniti QX56 no longer shares the exact same platform as the Nissan Armada, allowing the luxury maker more flexibility in its design, which has at least a bit in common, visually, with the latest-generation Range Rover, including the new front fender louvers.

The 2011 Infiniti QX56 no longer shares the base platform -- and key body panels -- with Nissan's second-generation Armada.

Full-size truly means something with the 2011 Infiniti QX56, which boasts enough space for eight adults.  Even the third row features electrically-reclining seatbacks.

“Our goal,” said Tavares, “is to create the interior feel of a private jet.”

To achieve lift-off, the ’11 QX56 relies on a 400-horsepower, 5.6-liter, Direct-Injection V-8.  That’s 25% more horsepower than the old model, even though mileage is itself up 10%.  For those who might want to pull a boat or trailer, the new QX has a rated towing capacity of 8,500 pounds.

The interior of the 2011 Infiniti QX56 is markedly upgraded with lavish use of leather and wood.

As one would expect of a vehicle carrying a base price of $56,700 — $59,800 with the optional all-wheel-drive – the 2011 Infiniti QX56 is loaded with standard comfort, performance and safety features, including the new Hydraulic Body Motion System, which Infiniti claims can reduce body lean by 40%.  There’s a blind spot detection system, active cruise control, a new Distance Control Assist, lane change monitor, and optional dual 7-inch video screens for the rear seats.

The 2011 Infiniti QX56 will hit U.S. showrooms this coming Summer.
