Despite Trump Pressure, Daimler Not Expanding US Production

Zetsche said Germany will remain "backbone" of manufacturing.

Daimler executives said that despite pressure from President Donald Trump, the company will not be adding to is production footprint in the U.S.

At this point, Daimler AG has no plans to expand its production capacity in the United States, executives said during the course of the company’s annual shareholders meeting in Berlin.

Since even before taking office in January, President Donald Trump has been leaning on automakers, both domestic and foreign, to build more vehicles in the U.S.

Trump was barely mentioned during the Daimler meeting. One shareholder suggested that the company set up a fund to help defend the European Union from Trump. But Manfred Bischoff, chairman of the Daimler Supervisory Board, said the measure could not be taken up at the meeting because it had not submitted prior to the meeting. (more…)

Mercedes Ready to Unleash the New S-Class

The S-Class sedan is getting an update that will be on display at the New York and Shanghai auto shows.

Mercedes-Benz plans to present an updated version of the S-Class sedan next month during auto shows in New York and Shanghai, Daimler AG CEO Dieter Zetsche told the company’s shareholders in Berlin.

“Technological paradigm shifts often result in the former top dog of a sector being replaced. But we’ve got everything we need to resist that pattern,” he said.

“The future offers Daimler a multitude of new opportunities and we will do our utmost to take advantage of them,” said Zetsche, who added the company’s overall strategy calls for boosting new initiatives and well-established advantages. (more…)

Daimler's Dieter Zetsche said the company is using its financial strength to meet the often contradictory challenges it faces.

Daimler AG continues to use its financial strength to push innovation as it faces the multifaceted challenges that often seem to be pulling the auto industry in opposite directions, the company’s top executive told the company’s shareholders at the automaker’s annual meeting in Berlin.

“We demonstrated once again in 2016: The combination of financial strength and innovativeness is stronger than ever at Daimler,” said Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche.

Daimler Chairman Dieter Zetsche said the company plans to build and sell the newly unveiled EQ brand of electric vehicles in China.

China will likely serve as the stage where the auto industry’s future plays out in the years to come, two key executives from Daimler AG told a Beijing Forum organized to discuss the future of the Chinese economy.

“The automotive industry is experiencing fundamental change: connectivity, autonomous driving, sharing and electric mobility. Each of these has the power to turn our entire industry upside down. And I truly believe: China can be ‘the turbo’ of this transformation,” Daimler AG CEO Dieter Zetsche told the forum as he outlined some of the key trends re-shaping the auto industry.

“Electric mobility, for instance, is developing quickly here. And we are aiming to further contribute to this development by planning to produce our new generation of electric Mercedes-Benz models also in China. Daimler AG Extends Zetsche’s Contract

Dieter Zetsche received a three-year contract extension from Daimler AG.

Daimler AG has extended the contract of its top executive, Dieter Zetsche, for an additional three years through Dec. 31, 2019, and placed one his principal protégés in a key assignment at the heart of the company.

Manfred Bischoff, the chairman of the Daimler supervisory board said in a statement that Zetsche, who will turn 63 in May, had earned the contract extension.

Dieter Zetsche will remain in place as Daimler AG CEO through 2019 after a three-year contract extension.

The Daimler AG Board of Supervisors plans to extend the contract of the company’s chief executive officer, Dieter Zetsche, through 2019.

Manfred Bischoff, chairman of the board of supervisors, told shareholders that Zetsche’s contract would be extended for another three years. Zetsche’s current contract expires at the end of 2016. The announcement drew few comments, pro or con, from the more than 5,000 shareholders, who gathered in Berlin for the company’s annual meeting.

Zetsche, who has never been wildly popular with Daimer’s often-critical shareholders, has served as Daimler CEO since 2006 when he took over the company from Juergen Schrempp, the architect of the ill-fated merger with Chrysler, which Zetsche dissolved in 2007. (more…)

Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche plans to unveil an autonomous concept at the Consumer Electronics Show next month in Las Vegas, but the maker released a few drawings in advance.

The race to put the first fully autonomous vehicle on the road is heating up. Dieter Zetsche, Daimler AG CEO, plans to unveil a Mercedes concept car loaded with the technology is hopes to use for its vehicle.

Mercedes-Benz released a few drawings of the interior of this vehicle, which allows the front seats to swivel around to face the back seat, allowing all of the occupants to engage in conversation. There’s even a small table in the center of the cabin that could act as a small coffee table.
