Chrysler Enters Commercial Van Market with 2015 Ram ProMaster City

Set to challenge Ford’s new Transit Connect line.

The new Ram ProMaster City is based on a modified Fiat Doblo compact van platform.

They may not have the visual appeal of a Dodge Challenger or Chrysler 300, nor the macho draw of the big Ram 1500 pickup, but there’s a sizable and growing market for small work vans that Fiat Chrysler hopes to tap into as it readies the launch of its new Ram ProMaster City.

Based on the European Fiat Diablo, but heavily updated for the North American market, the new ProMaster will take direct aim at Ford’s recently updated small world van, the Transit Connect.

Like the Transit Connect, the new Ram van uses a front-drive powertrain layout to help maximize cargo space, and the ProMaster City will be offered in two different lengths when it goes on sale in the U.S. early next year.

Ford Aims to Build Interest in Work Vans with New Transit

Automakers adding a little style – and lots of functionality.

It’s probably no surprise that Ford has put a lot more effort into heralding the launch of the new 2015 Mustang than into its new Transit and Transit Connect models. Vans are the automotive equivalent of Rodney Dangerfield. They get no respect, at least not from consumers.

But it’s a different story when it comes to business owners, and that means auto manufacturers like Ford love these vehicles because they generate consistent sales – and solid profits.

The full-size van “is an extremely important product for us,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s President of the Americas, as he watched the official roll-out of the first of the new full-size Transit models on Wednesday at the maker’s Kansas City Assembly Plant.
