Bovine surprises and other strange signs.

by on Sep.10, 2012

And our winner is....

Beware bovines from above.  We never knew it was so dangerous out in the New Age mecca of Taos, New Mexico until reader Nicole Ridlen submitted an unusual road sign warning drivers to watch out for falling rocks and cows.  Now she’ll receive a $500 gift certificate as the winner in TheDetroitBureau.com’s 1st annual Wild, Weird and Wacky Street Signs Contest.

We’ve been amazed at some of the entries that have landed in our e-mailbox…the flood of wacky entries prompting us to leave things open as long as possible.  But, alas, we had to eventually bring this good thing to an end and now, it’s time to announce all of the winners.

Beware falling sheep!

by on Aug.31, 2012

Hard to believe but we’re ready to wrap up the Wild Weird and Wacky Street Signs Contest…but first, we need your help picking the winners from 14 finalists.

We’ve had a hard time keeping a straight face ever since we asked our readers to submit some of the Wild, Weird and Wacky Street Signs they’ve spotted. The contest has clearly struck the right chord and our e-mail box has been filled with hundreds of entries from around the world.  We’ve seen signs that warn of falling sheep, others that tell us to “Grinn and Baret.”

We’ve been welcomed to the German village of Windpassing.  Helpful roadcrews have posted parking signs that would require a law degree to comprehend. And readers have sent us plenty of inexplicable billboards – like one for a new brand of bottled water, “now with H2O”!

Trying to sort through this motley collection hasn’t been easy and it seems that each of our judges – which include members of TheDetroitBureau.com, and sponsors such as NBC News – has individual favorites.  But we’ve been able to pare the list down to 14 finalists and now we’re asking your help in selecting the winners.  Remember, there are some great prizes at stake, including a $500 gift certificate from Bridgestone Tires, a great digital camera, a navi system with traffic and weather, and more!

To check out all 14 finalists and vote, Click Here. (You’ll be taken to contest co-sponsor NBC’s page.)

We’ll announce the winners on Sept. 10.

Signs Keep Getting Wackier as Readers Weigh In

Still more entries into our Wild, Weird and Wacky Street Signs Contest.

by on Aug.03, 2012

We’ve had a great time watching the entries roll in for our first Wild, Weird and Wacky Street Signs Contest.  Each day seems to bring a few new ones that are wilder and wackier than before.  So, we’ll continue to share some of the best entries.

For those who’ve somehow missed the news, we’re running a contest asking readers to share the crazy street signs they spot across the country — and around the world. Indeed, there seems to be a couple patterns developing, as you can see with the first photo submitted by reader George Santulli.  We’re not sure if there’s a direct link but the smaller the community the bigger the sense of humor seems to be the pattern.

Have an image of your own? Or maybe you want to run out and snap a shot of that sign you pass going to work every day. The good news is that you’ve still got plenty of time to enter.  The contest runs through August 17 and we’ll then ask readers to help us judge the best, with winners announced over the Labor Day holiday.  To add some motivation, prizes include a $500 Bridgestone tire gift certificate. In the meantime, here are some of the most recent entries in TheDetroitBureau.com’s Wild, Weird and Wacky Street Signs Contest!

Readers Respond With Some Wild, Weird and Wacky Street Signs

A look at some of our first entries.

by on Jul.11, 2012

Say again? This sign supposedly provides directions to a Chinese restaurant.

We expected nothing less.  When we announced TheDetroitBureau.com’s new Wild, Weird and Wacky Street Signs Contest we anticipated receiving a fair number of entries from readers around the world.  And we haven’t been disappointed.  We don’t expect you will be, either.

Here’s a first look at some of our favorites from the first batch that’s landed in our digital mailbox, starting with one from Stephen Henson, who’s on long-term assignment in Asia.  We’d like to believe that the English translation actually might help us find the restaurant but won’t count on it.  Henson’s snapshot is just one of many entries from Asia where we know folks who specialize in collecting “Japlish,” signs featuring mauled version of the English language.

Of course, even where English is the native tongue we find that we can be divided by a common language.  Several readers submitted images from the London Underground, or subway, that declared, “Way Out.”  Actually, it wasn’t a return to Hippie-speak, just the British way of pointing to the exit. Coming Monday: The Wild, Weird and Wacky Street Signs Contest!

You're invited to share road signs that make you laugh, stare or just your their head.

by on Jun.29, 2012

Paying attention while driving has its rewards – like helping to avoid a crash or not getting lost – but now the payoff for paying attention could be prizes including a set of new tires, a digital camera and more in the “Wild, Weird and Wacky Street Signs Contest” presented by TheDetroitBureau.com.

We’ve seen plenty of them in our travels, like one near Los Angeles that warns, “Danger, Algae on the Road,” and another that declares, “This Sign Has Sharp Edges.”  There’s the street sign for Farfrompoopin Rd., in Story, Arkansas, and Traverse City, Michigan’s Psycho Path.

We’re betting you readers have you own favorites – lots of them, in fact – and we’d love to hear what you’ve come across in your own travels.

The “Wild, Weird and Wacky Street Signs Contest,” sponsored by Nissan, Bridgestone and MSNBC.com, officially launches on Monday.  But keep your eyes — and camera — out until then.  You just might spot a winner!
