Uber Unlikely to Have Used Waymo Autonomous Tech, Judge Says

Despite Alsup's assertion, he hasn't ruled on Waymo's injunction request.

Uber scored a minor court victory as the judge asserted it was unlikely that Uber accessed any of Waymo's trade secrets.

Score one for Uber in the long-running courtroom drama between the ride-sharing company and Waymo, the autonomous vehicle spinoff of Google.

U.S. District Judge William Alsup said Waymo has failed to provide clear evidence that Uber conspired with engineer Anthony Levandowski to steal trade secrets from Waymo for its self-driving vehicle technology.

Waymo has asked the judge to slap Uber and Levandowski with injunctions preventing Uber from proceeding with its autonomous vehicle program, claiming that Uber was essentially using Waymo’s technology, especially its Lidar system. (more…)

Levandowski Steps Away from Uber’s Autonomous Program

Waymo continues testing its autonomous vehicles as it wages a court battle over the technology with Uber.

The man at the heart of autonomous vehicle company Waymo’s lawsuit against Uber, Anthony Levandowski, is going to give up some of his duties until the suit is settled.

Levandowski is a former Waymo employee who that company alleges took more than 14,000 documents with him when he left to form his own company, which he sold to Uber. The company now forms the bulk of Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group.

However, Waymo, which was formerly part of Google before it was spun off into its own unit, officials allege the documents contain information about its Lidar system and further they alledge Uber appears to be replicating it. (more…)

Waymo Levels New Charges Against Uber

Google subsidiary suggesting Uber autonomous system will be identical to Waymo's.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick's company has been hit with a new set of allegations by Waymo.

Uber faces additional charges by Waymo, Google’s autonomous car subsidiary, which has accused the San Francisco-based ride hailing of stealing intellectual property.

In new court filings last week, Waymo claimed that Uber has been developing a secret, secondary self-driving technology that copies digit-for-digit Waymo’s autonomous driving designs.

In addition, the new complaint from Waymo also claims Uber intentionally concealed this project from the U.S. District Court judge assigned to the case after the Google subsidiary filed its original suit back in February. (more…)

Waymo Escalates Battle with Uber

Waymo claims former employee stolen intellectual property for autonomous technology.

Waymo is suing Uber to prevent the company from using or selling intellectual property it claims a former Waymo employee stole and gave to Uber.

Waymo, Google’s self-driving vehicle subsidiary, is escalating its legal battle with Uber Technologies and its subsidiary Otto Trucking by asking a federal judge to prevent the car sharing service from using or selling any of the technology that Waymo claims was stolen by a former Google employee who went on to start his own company now owned by Uber.

In documents filed with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, Waymo is seeking a preliminary injunction prohibiting Uber Technologies, Inc., Ottomotto LLC and Otto Trucking LLC .

The filing would prohibit them “from accessing, using, imitating, copying, disclosing, or making available to any person or entity Waymo’s Asserted Trade Secrets, including but not limited to the Asserted Trade Secrets as embodied in LiDAR systems that contain or are designed to operate with the printed circuit board depicted in the schematic attached as Exhibit 1 to the Declaration of William Grossman or any colorable variation thereof.
