Audi Readying Plug-in Hybrid Assault

But will customers come along?

by on Oct.08, 2014

Audi is looking to expand its plug-in hybrid line-up. The TT Offroad concept could be part of that portfolio.

Audi planners are hoping to decide on which of three prototype versions of the maker’s popular TT model to put into production. And the odds are good that it will feature a plug-in hybrid drivetrain by the time it reaches showrooms.

Though the German brand was slow to embrace electrification, it is now trying to make up for lost time. But where Toyota has positioned itself as the “hybrid company,” Audi wants to go the next step, focusing its efforts on advanced plug-in technology, said the brand’s chief executive.

Volkswagen's e-Up! concept reflects the maker's turnaround about having electric vehicles in its lineup.

With the launch of the new e-Golf model at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, along with the smaller e-Up! model, Volkswagen AG begins a high-voltage push into the emerging battery-car market. And that’s just the start, senior VW officials promise.

Add in models as diverse as the plug-in hybrid Audi A3 Sportback and the new battery-assisted Porsche 918 supercar, and Europe’s largest automaker begins the process of rolling out a planned 40 hybrids, plug-ins and full battery-electric vehicles, or BEVs, by 2018.

So aggressive is the Volkswagen campaign that CEO Martin Winterkorn is projecting the maker will become the largest manufacturer of battery-based vehicles in the world, noting, “We have developed the know-how for electric motors and battery systems at our own components plants, we have recruited 400 top experts for electric traction and qualified almost 70,000 development, production and service employees in this new technology — the biggest electrification training program in our industry.” (more…)

The Beetle-based Volkswagen E-Bugster battery-electric concept car.

Volkswagen bugged out on its Detroit Auto Show news conference, the maker introducing the Beetle-based E-Bugster concept car, along with a hybrid version of its popular Jetta model.

Both are intended to show that despite its slow entry into the world of electrification, Volkswagen aims, by 2018, “to be the most sustainable automaker and will further invest heavily in research and development,” according to VW AG CEO Martin Winterkorn.

The E-Bugster, short for Electric-Bug speedster is the latest in VW’s growing line-up of Blue e-motion concepts.  It’s not your classic convertible but features a chopped and removable roof that gives it a look that some might find more like the new Mini Roadster than the classic Volkswagen Beetle.
