Volkswagen Challenges Tesla Model 3 Before It Hits the Streets

German maker says its I.D. model will be much less expensive.

by on Jul.17, 2017

Volkswagen says when its I.D. hits the market in two years, it'll be cheaper than its primary competitor, the Tesla Model 3.

It hasn’t even hit a dealershi, er, retail store yet, but the Tesla Model 3 is already generating a strong response from future competitors, including Volkswagen which said its mass-market model, the I.D., will be priced lower than the Tesla entry.

Production on the Model 3 began last week, which is supposed to be Tesla’s entry-level model at a base price of $35,000. However, once a few additions are made, the costs quickly escalate past $40,000 and closer to $50K, claim VW executives.

Global Auto News!

The Golf-sized I.D. is expected to start at $27,000 and boast a range of 249 to 373 miles, depending upon different variables. It would come in at 168 horsepower. The Model 3 is expected to get about 215 miles to a full charge. (more…)

VW Stretches the Range of its e-Golf

Battery hatchback to get gesture control.

by on Nov.17, 2016

The 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf gets a 50% bigger battery pack, pushing its range to 134 miles on a charge.

Volkswagen is hoping to get more buyers to plug into the all-electric version of its compact Golf line and is betting a longer-range version could give the 2017 VW e-Golf more momentum.

Making its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the battery-electric vehicle gets a 50% bigger battery pack for 2017 that also let it travel nearly 50% further on each charge. That will make it one of the longest-range models on the market, though the e-Golf will get barely half the range of the new Chevrolet Bolt when it hits showrooms in the coming weeks.

The Journal of Record!

The debut of the updated e-Golf serves as a signal that Volkswagen is committed to battery power. Phasing back on its once-popular diesels in the week of a global emissions test cheating scandal, VW now says it will have as many as 30 different pure battery-electric models in its line-up within a decade, including a production version of the little I.D. model that was unveiled at the recent Paris Motor Show. by on Sep.30, 2014

Volkswagen continues the rapid expansion of its electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid line-up with the Passat GTE.

Slow to jump on the hybrid bandwagon, Volkswagen lately has plugged in with a procession of more advanced battery-based vehicles, such as the fully electrified version of its Up! Microcar and the Golf GTE plug-in hybrid.

Now, it’s bringing out another plug-based model, the Passat GTE, which will make its formal debut at the Paris Motor Show later this week.

The Automotive Journal of Record!
