VW Using Deal With Didi to Aid Autonomous Development

Automaker gets access to data from 3M rides daily.

VW's new CEO Herbert Diess is pushing to cut costs and accelerate the development of new technologies.

Volkswagen’s pending partnership with Didi Chuxing to build and maintain a fleet of vehicles not only gives the Chinese behemoth a tighter grip on the ride-share market in its home country, it will accelerate VW’s development of autonomous vehicles.

As part of the deal, which is expected to be finalized next month, the German automaker will initially manage a fleet of about 100,000 new vehicles for Didi, of which two-thirds will be Volkswagen Group cars, according to Reuters.

Volkswagen will also be part of an alliance of 31 companies, including Toyota and Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, to develop cheap, electrified vehicles for China. (more…)

VW’s I.D. Vizzion Concept Could Change the Way We Travel

Rethinking what an autonomous and electric vehicle could offer.

Volkswagen's fourth I.D. prototype, the I.D. Vizzion, is headed to the Geneva Motor Show.

It’s become something of an industry mantra that the automobile will change more in the next five years than it has in the last 50, and you need only walk into your nearest showroom to see that this is more than hype. Manufacturers already are rolling out what will soon become a flood of electrified vehicles and there are now at least a half-dozen models with significant, semi-autonomous capabilities.

What comes next? Volkswagen has been offering up some intriguing hints with a series of concept vehicles previewing the launch of its new, electrified brand-within-a-brand, and it will debut the fourth prototype, the I.D. Vizzion, at the Geneva Motor Show next week.

VW Hopes to Build Buzz for EV Microbus, the I.D. Buzz

Everything that's old is new again with VW drawing inspiration for its new I.D. Buzz electric minivan from the Microbus.

Few automakers have been plugging into battery-electric propulsion like Volkswagen, the German automaker scaling back its traditional focus on diesels to launch as many as 30 different plug-based models by 2025.

As this year’s North American International Auto Show prepared to get underway, VW was building buzz with rumors that the list would include an all-new, version of its classic Microbus. Now, it’s taken the wraps off the concept vehicle it’s dubbed the Volkswagen I.D. Buzz.

“We are making electric mobility the new trademark of Volkswagen,” declared Herbert Diess, chairman of the Volkswagen brand. And though he wouldn’t say whether the I.D. Buzz will make the transition from concept to production, there are reasons to believe it very well could be in the works. (more…)

VW Expects 2015 to Surpass 2014

Latin America, Eastern Europe pose challenge for maker.

Martin Winterkorn told shareholders at the company's annual meeting he expects 2015 to exceed 2014.

After a long run of success that has brought it within striking distance of becoming the world’s largest automaker, the Volkswagen Group is looking for additional growth again in 2015.

Martin Winterkorn, VW’s chief executive officer, acknowledged during the company’s annual shareholder’s meeting in Berlin the German automotive giant was facing challenges as economic growth slows in China as well economic difficulties in Eastern Europe and Latin America.

“We are being deliberate rather more cautious – despite excellent figures we always have a good grip on reality,” Winterkorn said. “Our stated goal for fiscal year 2015 is to achieve further growth both in terms of volumes and in our sales revenue and operating profit.” (more…)

VW Plugging Into Chinese EV Market

Maker promises to invest $27 bil over 5 years.

VW will launch the e-Golf and an assortment of other battery-based vehicles in China.

With Beijing’s traffic choked roads as a backdrop, Volkswagen announced a major initiative to put tens, perhaps 100s of thousands of electric vehicles on the road in China before the end of the current decade.

VW chief executive officer Martin Winterkorn said VW and its key Chinese partners were prepared to spend as much as $27 billion in the next five years on electric vehicles in China.
