Volvo V60 Cross Country Aiming for Its Own Unique Niche

New Cross Country model strikes a balance between wagon and CUV.

by on Nov.21, 2014

The Volvo V60 Cross Country is officially a wagon, but with its taller, almost coupe-like proportions, it could have been re-designated a crossover.

Few manufacturers have had their image more closely tied to the station wagon, even though Volvo went awhile without offering one in the U.S. market – and probably for good reason considering the limited demand for that seemingly out-of-date body style.

Significantly, when the Swedish maker’s turn in the spotlight came at this week’s Los Angeles Auto Show, it put the focus on the new XC90 sport-utility vehicle it will launch next year. But there was another model sharing the stage, and it harkens more closely to Volvo’s roots.

The Volvo V60 Cross Country is officially being called a wagon, but with its taller, almost coupe-like proportions, it could just as easily have been re-designated a crossover. It certainly has a silhouette similar to other European CUVs, such as the BMW X1. (more…)

Volvo Begins Slow Tease of XC90 Reveal

Swedish maker shows off new crossover’s interior.

by on May.28, 2014

The all-new Volvo XC90 is getting a slow reveal from the Swedish maker. It's revealed the new interior in a series of photos, which will be followed by more information throughout the summer.

Swedish automaker Volvo kicked off the slow reveal of its update of its best-selling XC90 crossover by sharing photos of the interior of the car, which looked…well, Swedish thanks to tiny Swedish flags sewn into the seats.

The new interior is clean and simple. In the early photos released yesterday, the crossover will be swathed in leather and wood. It also features a prominent touch screen display in the center stack that will control a multitude of functions, including the maker’s new infotainment system. The XC90 is designed to accommodate seven passengers and it appears that it’ll do that just fine with seats that appear to recline for all passengers.

The all-new XC90 is the first Volvo to use the company’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), which allows the Swedish company to produce everything from sedans to coupes to this new crossover. This is the first vehicle created under the Geely regime, which bought Volvo from Ford a few years back. (more…)

by on Jan.15, 2014

Volvo's Coupe XC concept is supposed to evoke a vision of an active outdoor life, said Senior Vice President Thomas Ingenlath.

Volvo is in the midst of debuting three concept vehicles at three different auto shows, and at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, it showed the Volvo Concept XC Coupe, which is the second of three.

It’s the successor to the Volvo Concept C that we first saw at the Frankfurt Motor Show last autumn, which Volvo insiders confirmed as giving the world a good sense of the company’s future design direction.

Internet Abuzz About Volvo Teaser Campaign

Swedish maker may be pulling off a surprise.

by on May.17, 2013

Volvo's new teaser campaign leaves everyone guessing.

The Internet has been abuzz about the possible hidden meaning behind a trio of short video teasers from Volvo. With the tagline, “Leave the World Behind,” each features a member of the once-popular band, Swedish House Mafia, along with a mysterious vehicle that, the rumor mill is betting, could be the prototype of a new crossover.

Now owned by China’s Geely, Volvo promises to solve the mystery later today at a European news conference. But sources have spilled the herring, as it were, and TheDetroitBureau.com can clue you in on what to expect.  Actually, we’ll start by telling you what not to expect: a new car.

News from a Source You Can Trust!

While TheDetroitBureau.com’s sources wouldn’t reveal all the details, they hinted that what we’re witnessing is a reunion of the once popular group — though considering the fact that the three Swedish House Mafia band members appear in separate teaser videos, we’ll have to wait to see how they all come together.

Volvo V40 Cross Country Is a Blend of Wagon and Crossover

New model to feature world's 1st pedestrian airbag.

by on Oct.01, 2012

The Volvo V40 Cross Country will target luxury competitors such as the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz B-Class.

Say “Volvo” and there’s a good chance your first image will be one of the maker’s traditional, boxy wagons.  While “two-box” designs remain strong in the European market, ute-like styling has become much more prevalent in the rest of the world – and is steadily gaining ground on the Continent, as well.

So, with the Paris Motor Show unveiling of the new V40 Cross Country, Volvo is clearly hoping to deliver a blend of both wagon and CUV. And it’s taking aim at such challenging competitors as the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz B-Class crossovers.

Based on the current Volvo V40 Hatchback, the Cross Country gains nearly two inches in ride height – while getting larger, black and silver alloy wheels and decidedly chunky bumpers that Volvo apparently believes will give the new model a more robust, go-anywhere appearance.
