Mercedes Working Up 1,000 HP Supercar

Two alternate versions reportedly under development.

by on Nov.30, 2015

The Mercedes-McLaren SLR was first unveiled in 2003. It's shown here during a debut drive.

The new Mercedes-AMG GT is an intimidating beast, meant to challenge the likes of the venerable Porsche 911. But it’s not a true replacement for two of the maker’s recent supercars, the SLR and SLS models.

Now, it seems, Mercedes wants to fill that gap and take advantage of the growing demand for vehicles that can deliver as much as 1,000 horsepower or more. According to a report in the well-connected German magazine, Auto Bild, Mercedes is looking at two alternatives that could push the pony count near, and perhaps into the four-figure range.

Firing on All Cylinders!

It would join a select group of so-called ultracars, including the Koenigsegg Agera and Bugatti Veyron. But it would take a very different approach when it comes to delivering all that muscle.

Ford Will Build GT in Canada

Supplier Multimatic also produced Aston Martin One-77 supercar.

by on Feb.16, 2015

Newly painted silver, the Ford GT is now on display at the annual Chicago Auto Show.

Ford’s new all-American supercar, the GT, will actually be rolling out of a plant in Ontario, the maker has confirmed.

The 600-plus horsepower “ultracar” will be produced by Multimatic Inc., a suburban Toronto supplier with extensive experience using the exotic carbon fiber that will be used for the Ford GT body. Multimatic previously produced the Aston Martin One-77 supercar which also used the super-light material.

High Performance News!

Bedecked in a new silver paint scheme, the GT concept is currently on display at the Chicago Auto Show. It was originally painted blue when unveiled at the North American International Auto Show – where it was one of the event’s big surprises.

Koenigsegg Agera One:1 Smashes Through 1300 HP Barrier

Taking aim at the land speed record.

by on Mar.03, 2014

Koenigsegg plans to build just six copies of the Agera One:1, at nearly $2.9 million each.

It wasn’t all that long ago that the folks at Bugatti promised the seemingly unthinkable, revealing plans to break the 1,000-horsepower mark with their Veyron ultracar. Now, for those who think that isn’t quite enough muscle for the delay commute, the Swedish automaker Koenigsegg is weighing in with the Agera One:1.

Making its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show today, the fighter jet-like Agera will deliver an astonishing 1322 horsepower – 1340 in metric terms – and 1,011 pound-feet of torque.  Koenigsegg, which is using the new model to celebrate its 20th anniversary, claims the Agera will be able to top out at 280 mph.

On paper, at least, that suggests what the Swedish maker calls “the world’s first megacar” will also be the planet’s fastest production vehicle. Currently, that title is up in the air, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport officially recognized for its 269.86 mph record run, but with a Hennessey Venom GT nudging out an ever so slightly faster 270.49 mph run that remains a matter of dispute.

Ferrari Goes Hybrid for Fastest Car Ever

New LaFerrari a nearly 1,000-hp replacement for old Enzo.

by on Mar.05, 2013

The new LaFerrari borrows heavily from the maker's successful Formula One race program.

If your idea of a hybrid looks something like the Toyota Prius, something that’s more fuel-efficient than fun-to-drive, you may need an attitude readjustment after getting a look at the new LaFerrari, the long-awaited replacement for the Italian automaker’s former flagship, the Enzo.

This is definitely not your typical gas-electric drivetrain, though the maker insists it will substantially reduce emissions and fuel consumption compared to a conventional drivetrain. Of course, there aren’t many out there that can churn out to nearly 1,000 horsepower.

During a presentation at the Geneva Motor Show, Ferrari President Luca di Montezemelo described the new model as the “maximum expression of what defines our company….all the capabilities of our know-how,” adding that the LaFerrari “represents the future” for one of the world’s most respected sports car manufacturers.

McLaren P1 Performance Numbers Likely to Leave You Breathless

0 to 60 in “less than three seconds,” ultracar tops out at 218.

by on Feb.28, 2013

McLaren hopes to one-up Ferrari when it launches the P1 ultra-car at the Geneva Motor Show.

If supercars and other high-priced exotics are your game you’ll likely want to keep a close eye on the Geneva Motor Show next month with everyone from Bentley to Ferrari weighing in with new entries – and upstart McLaren intending to clamber to the top of the heap.

The maker has finally released production numbers for the P1, the track-ready supercar it previewed in Paris last year.  And the word, “breathless” quickly comes to mind, the 2-seater promised to deliver 0 to 100 kmh (0 to 62.5 mph) times of “less than three seconds,” with a rated top speed of 218 mph.

News You Can Use!

Supercars have a lot in common with baseball, where the game is as much as anything about statistics. And for the number crunchers here are some equally impressive figures. The McLaren P1 will dash from 0 to 200 kmh (0 to 125 mph) in under seven seconds, with the launch to 300 kmh rated at 17 seconds.
