Toyota Pushes Design Boundaries with FCV Plus

The Toyota FCV Plus largely abandons traditional automotive design conventions.

The funky styling of the new Toyota Mirai hydrogen car has already been raising some eyebrows, but if you think that’s pushing the envelope, well, as the old saying goes, you ain’t seen nothing’ yet.

The fundamentals of a fuel-cell vehicle are radically different from those of a car using an internal combustion engine, and Toyota takes things to a radical extreme with the FCV Plus concept vehicle that made its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show this week.

A Look into the Future!

With the basic hardware driving the prototype neatly tucked away, the FCV devotes virtually every inch above the floorboards to passengers and cargo, resulting in a design that might seem more at home on the set of a science fiction flick than on today’s highways.

The Toyota S-FR is expected to anchor a three sports car line-up Toyota is developing.

It’s long been known for plain vanilla design and lackluster performance, an image Toyota is intent on transforming. And with the addition of a trio of new sports cars, it just might.

Just three weeks ahead of the biennial Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota is giving us a hint of what it will be putting on display, and the list includes three “very different” concept cars, as well as a downsized version of the talking robot it sent into space.

While the Kirobo Mini might push the cute factor to new limits, the Toyota S-FR will lead the Japanese giant into more sporty territory as one of three performance models it is soon expected to have in its line-up.

Toyota has been studying a number of extreme options, including the i-Road commuter car.

Ever since he came onboard as the top executive at a company long known for its sturdy and reliable – but plain vanilla – products, Akio Toyoda has been pressing his team to pump some “passion” into its line-up.

Toyota has offered some hints of what’s in store with concepts like the exotic FT-1, as well as more stylish production models such as the Lexus RC coupe. But now, it seems, the Japanese giant is ready to take things to the next level.

Hours after unveiling the Toyota 86 in Tokyo, Scion shows off its new FR-S.

Toyota seems to be taking to heart the mandate laid down by CEO Akio Toyoda that it start pumping some passion into its products.  The Japanese giant had barely finished up the Tokyo Motor Show introduction of its new 86 sports car before its youth-oriented Scion division rolled out the all-new FR-S 2+2.

Of course, the two are one-and-the-same, barring the badging.  Toyota has decided to launch the American version of the sports car developed in a joint venture with Subaru as the new Scion FR-S.

“Serving as a laboratory for Toyota, Scion is always experimenting with new things,” explained Scion brand boss Jack Hollis, during a preview at Hollywood’s Milk Studios. “The FR-S will no doubt serve as the halo car, expanding Scion into a new dimension of driving performance.”

Toyota finally reveals the production version of its new sports car - to be called 86 in Japan and Scion FR-S in the States.

Nearly four years in the making, Toyota has finally pulled the wraps off the 2-seat sports car it has developed as part of a joint venture with the smaller Japanese automaker Subaru.

Targeted at the small, affordable sports car niche now dominated by the long-lived Mazda Miata, Toyota will call the new model the Toyota 86, a reference to the maker’s legendary AE86 Corolla of the 1980s.  The sports car will actually go by a variety of different names.  The Japanese will also know it as the Hachiroku, while it will go with the moniker Toyota GT-86 in Europe — and appear under the Scion FR-S badge in the States.

Whatever you prefer, the 2-seater is a low-slung design that was developed as part of a tandem effort that appears to have put the emphasis on Toyota design and Subaru technology – such as the so-called 2.0-liter boxer inline-four engine both manufacturers will share.  But the lines are a bit blurry, insiders stress, Toyota, for example, reportedly kicking in its fuel delivery system.


BMW, Toyota To Swap Hybrid Engines for Diesels

Toyota will swap hybrid technology used in models like the 2012 Prius v for BMW's diesel technology.

BMW and Toyota have reportedly agreed to swap diesel and hybrid powertrains in an effort to improve their fleet fuel economy.

Such partnerships are becoming increasingly popular as automakers face the rapid increase in government-mandated mileage standards in key markets such as the U.S., Europe, Japan and China.  The challenge for even the best manufacturers is to ensure they can not only meet new regulations but do it in a way that lives up to customer expectations.

As part of their new alliance BMW would supply some of its advanced diesel technology to Toyota in return for some of the Japanese maker’s Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrains.  Toyota is the world’s biggest seller of hybrid-electric vehicles, its Prius model accounting for roughly half of global hybrid demand.

According to Automotive News a formal announcement of the partnership would likely be made this week at the Tokyo Motor Show.

BMW was a latecomer to hybrid power and has been struggling to play catch-up, with a gas-electric version of its 5-Series line to be announced at the biennial Tokyo event.  While Toyota has dominated the hybrid field it, in turn, has been slow to embrace diesel technology.

So have its key Japanese rivals – but that appears to be changing.  Mazda plans to offer a diesel version of its new high-mileage Skyactiv system and a senior Honda official told that the maker is also working to expand its diesel line-up.  Significantly, as the Tokyo debut of the 5-Series “oil-burner” suggests, there are signs that diesel demand is expected to grow out of its traditional European stronghold, with sales on the rise in both the U.S. and Japan.

It’s not the first time the two makers have turned to partnerships to expand their powertrain and vehicle options.

BMW previously joined a hybrid consortium that also included General Motors, Chrysler and Daimler AG.  That helped it develop the Bavarian maker’s first hybrid offering though BMW has since walked away from that alliance.

Toyota, meanwhile, will unveil its new GT86 sports car at the Tokyo Motor Show, a vehicle it has developed in partnership with Japan’s smaller automaker Subaru – which will market its own version of the two-seater as the Subaru BRZ.  Toyota is also allied with Silicon Valley-based Tesla Motors.  The start-up battery car maker will, among other things, handle the development of the Toyota RAV-4 EV, due out in less than two years.

Toyota also announced a partnership with Ford, in August, to jointly develop new hybrid SUVs and trucks.  The U.S. maker, for its part, pays a licensing fee to Toyota for patents covering the gas-electric technologies it uses in models such as the Ford Fusion Hybrid.

Toyota will introduce the next new member of the Prius family at the Tokyo Motor Show.

Toyota will introduce the next version of its fast-growing Prius “family” of hybrid vehicles at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show – but it is providing a first look at what will be named the new Prius C.

The compact gas-electric model will join the original Prius hybrid, as well as the larger Prius V and Toyota’s first extended-range model, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid.

The Japanese giant is betting there’ll be a halo effect by sharing the Prius name on a variety of new offerings.  The original Prius hatchback now accounts for roughly half of the world’s overall hybrid sales.

Due to get its U.S. debut at the Detroit Auto Show next January, the Prius C is notably smaller than the original Toyota hybrid – about the same size, in fact, as the current Toyota Yaris.  But it features the same basic Toyota Hybrid-Synergy Drive powertrain, here upgraded with a new “high-output” electric motor mated to its inline-four 1.5-liter gasoline engine.
