Toyota Recalling 370,000 Hybrids, Luxury Models

Vehicles could unexpectedly stall in traffic.

The Lexus RX 400h was previously covered by an unintended acceleration recall.

Toyota is recalling about 370,000 hybrids and other vehicles due a pair of safety-related problems, the maker announced, the vast majority of them sold here in the United States.

Roughly half of the affected vehicles are hybrids, including the Lexus RX400h produced between 2006 and 2008 and the Toyota Highlander Hybrid sold between the 2006 and 2010 model-years.

More than Just the Headlines!

According to Toyota, a defective circuit in the hybrid electronic control system can overheat.  That can trigger a warning system though, in some instances, the problem can result in the vehicles suddenly and unexpectedly stopping, a potentially risky situation while driving in traffic.

The Lexus RX400h is one of two Toyota hybrid SUVs affected by the latest safety recall.

Toyota will recall more than 82,000 hybrid SUVs sold in the United States due to potential wiring defects.

The news is another setback for the Japanese giant, which has been struggling to regain control over its quality after a series of safety-related problems that led it to recall more than 10 million vehicles last year – and which have spurred a flurry of lawsuits now working their way through the courts.

The new recall comes as the credit rating agency Moody’s Investor Services downgrades Toyota’s debt and warns that the maker’s problems may be serious enough to warrant another downgrade in the coming months.  (Click Here for that story.)

Job News!

The latest recall involves 45,500 Toyota Highlander Hybrid SUVs and 36,700 Lexus RX400h hybrid crossovers sold in the U.S. during the 2006 and 2007 model-years.

According to the maker, the hybrids may have computer boards with improperly soldered connections.  Under “high-load” driving conditions those connections could break.  In turn, a vehicle might either operate at reduced power for a short distance or coast to a stop.

Gas Pedal Entrapment by Floor Mats
Drivers should immediately take out the driver-side floor mat of the following Toyota, Lexus, and Pontiac vehicles:

  • 2007-2010 Camry
  • 2005-2010 Avalon
  • 2004-2009 Prius
  • 2005-2010 Tacoma
  • 2007-2010 Tundra
  • 2007-2010 ES 350
  • 2006-2010 IS 250 and IS350
  • 2008-2010 Highlander
  • 2009-2010 Corolla
  • 2009-2010 Venza
  • 2009-2010 Matrix
  • 2009-2010 Pontiac Vibe

After removing the driver-side floor mats, consumers should wait for a letter from Toyota instructing them to go to their dealers for the remedy. More than four million vehicles have been recalled for this safety issue.

Sticky Gas Pedals

Toyota Recalls Tacoma for Driveshaft Failures

The latest to join a growing recall list at Toyota.

The following is significantly revised from the original story to add Nissan and Ford Motor involvement – editor.

When Toyota started pressing for world leadership almost a decade ago, management did not envision obtaining another kind of automotive leadership — recalls.

In a classic late Friday release, the beleaguered company announced its latest recall involving current production Tacoma pickup trucks.

Toyota said in a brief statement that 2010 model four-wheel-drive Tacoma pickup trucks may have cracked driveshaft yokes.  No accidents or warranty claims have been reported.

The problem occurs where the yoke connects to the driveshaft on what is the front driveshaft of four-wheel-drive trucks. Worse, it is the front of the shaft that potentially can fail, which can lead to a “pole vaulting” effect if the shaft digs into the pavement as the truck moves forward. (See for a diagram.)

Other makers including Ford Motor and Nissan are involved in this safety related defect, according to a person familiar with the matter, since driveline supplier Dana made the defective shafts, estimated at 34,000.  Toyota only used 8,000 of them.

All-wheel-drive versions of Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner and Mazda Tribute models used about 17,000, although the shaft went to the rear wheels; leaving Nissan with about 9,000 of the potentially questionable shafts.

There is of course a tendency at all auto companies to attempt to minimize both the number of defective vehicles recalled, and to take steps to also minimize resulting publicity. The other  makers that used the Dana shafts have five business days to recall a vehicle, once — and if –  a defect is determined in their applications.

Old style, pre-web communications practices are complicating the problem. Terse statements with as little detail as possible are standard practice in the industry, making it impossible for owners or journalists to assess the severity of the problem and act appropriately.

In the current environment, Toyota  immediately recalled the  vehicles after being informed by Dana.

This Tacoma action follows recent recalls on Toyota Prius and Lexus hybrid models for defective brakes, Camry steering failures, and accelerator sticking and floor mat entrapment on at least eight  models.

Model year 2005-2010 Tacoma trucks are also involved in the floor mat entrapment recall of  last September for unintended acceleration problems.

More than 8 million vehicles have now been recalled by Toyota globally.

In the U.S., the company faces two Congressional hearings over its safety procedures, and the Senate has now scheduled a third public hearing. More hearings are possible.

The Good, Bad or Ugly!

Worse, as publicity mounts, we expect that more recalls will be added, or previous ones expanded as the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reviews Toyota procedures and data with a new skepticism based on what critics claim is a long history of ignoring customer problems that reaches all the way back to corporate headquarters in Japan.   (more…)

Recall FAQs: Toyota Prius and Lexus HS 250h Brakes; Toyota Camry Steering Failures

Toyota’s latest explanations of ongoing quality, brake and steering defects, and what it plans to do about it.

The Lexus brand has now been dragged into ongoing recall controversies at Toyota Motor.

Inquiries continue to increase about the Toyota’s ongoing quality problems. In the case of Prius and other hybrid models with regenerative braking, Toyota announced a global recall on 2010 models in the early hours of this morning. Note that Lexus has now been included for the first time.

The Camry recall is a separate, but nonetheless serious, steering failure matter.

  • What is the problem with the 2010 Prius?


The anti-lock brake system (ABS) in the 2010 model-year Prius, in normal operation, engages and disengages rapidly (many times per second) as the control system senses and reacts to tire slippage. Some owners have reported experiencing inconsistent brake feel during slow and steady application of the brakes on rough or slick road surfaces when the anti-lock brake system (ABS) is activated in an effort to maintain tire traction.

  • How is Toyota responding to this Prius issue?

Toyota has responded to owner concerns with a running production change for the 2010 Prius that was introduced last month, improving the ABS system’s response time, as well as the system’s overall sensitivity to tire slippage.

The recall will allow Toyota dealers to perform this software update in the anti-lock brake systems of 2010 Prius vehicles sold prior to this production change.

  • Why does this only impact 2010 Prius models?

First- and second-generation Prius vehicles use a different ABS system and are not involved in this campaign.

  • What is the problem with the Lexus HS 250h?

The anti-lock brake system on the Lexus HS 250h shares similar component design to the 2010 Prius, so it has been included on this recall.    (more…)
