Takata Airbag Recall Effort Sputtering

Less than 35 percent of airbags replaced, politician says.

Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Florida) is prodding automakers to accelerate the pace of Takata airbag repairs.

Despite concerted efforts to double and production of replacements, less than 35% of vehicle owners with Takata’s potentially explosive airbag inflators have managed to completed the needed repairs on their vehicles.

Senator Bill Nelson of Florida said just 15.8 million inflators of 46.2 million recalled inflators were repaired through mid-May. Nelson said his figures came from a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration independent monitor.

The recall began in 2015 after it was determined that the ignition materials may degrade over time and in certain instances explode, sending pieces of plastic and metal debris into the vehicle cabin. More than 15 deaths and 150 injuries worldwide have been tied to the inflators. (more…)

GM Allowed to Delay Takata Airbag Recall

Feds give time to Detroit maker to prove its bags used safer design.

General Motors received a reprieve from recalling 2.5 million vehicles with Takata airbags.

Federal regulators have given General Motors a temporary reprieve, allowing it time to prove that the Takata airbags used in 2.5 million vehicles, including the popular Chevrolet Silverado pickup, use a unique and safe design and thus don’t need to be recalled.

Ultimately, GM could be allowed to halt several other recalls involving Takata airbags, a move that could affect 6.8 million vehicles, in the process saving the automaker about $870 million, according to documents it filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

They’ve been called one of the most important safety technologies ever developed, but there’s growing concern that as airbags age they could become a major threat to the safety of millions of American motorists.

Nearly a dozen different automakers have so far recalled more than 40 million vehicles around the world due to faulty airbags produced by Japan’s Takata Corp. that have been blamed for at least eight deaths and 100s of injuries. But as NHTSA launches an investigation into the supplemental restraint system provided by a second supplier, the nation’s top automotive safety regulator told that he’s worried the problem could be far more widespread.

“Cars are lasting on the road a lot longer than ever before,” said Mark Rosekind, head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, during a visit to Detroit. “Is aging now an issue? That’s part of the investigation going on.”

And it’s taking on increased urgency as automotive regulators, safety advocates and industry officials begin to question whether a technology designed to save lives can, over time, become a threat to life and limb.


Takata Officials Expected to be Grilled at Congressional Hearing

Lawmakers likely to demand answers to tough questions.

Takata's Hiroshi Shimizu is likely to face some hostile questions if he's called to testify before lawmakers next week in Washington D.C.

Takata’s recent acquiescence to federal regulators pushing the supplier to declare 33.8 million airbags defective likely won’t be enough to save the company’s executives from another appearance before U.S. lawmakers.

The hearing aims to provide officials with an update on how the problem with the airbags, which have caused largest single recall in U.S. history, is going to be resolved and when. It’s expected that officials from Takata, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and other Transportation officials will make appearances.

While who specifically will be called to testify before the Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade Subcommittee, which is part of the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee, isn’t yet known, when the hearing convenes in Washington D.C. on Tuesday it’s a safe bet, Takata officials will face some harsh questioning. Takata Ramping Up Replacement Airbag Production

Component maker aiming to increase production to 900k monthly.

Takata is pushing to double its current output of replacement inflators by September to 900,000 monthly at its plant in Mexico.

Takata recently ramped up its production of replacement inflators for its recalled airbags by 50 percent to 450,000 units a month. The company is now looking to double that number by this fall.

The Japanese airbag maker has been forced to recall tens of millions of airbags globally because they may inflators may explode upon activation sending shrapnel in to the cabin possibly injuring or killing passengers in the car.

More turmoil at Takata.

Takata Corp. just received two belts of bad news: one of its former executives will face criminal charges in the U.S. and its biggest customer is cutting back on its business with the supplier.

Federal prosecutors obtained one-count indictment against Hiromu Usuda, charging him with conspiring to rig bids and fix the prices of seatbelts that Takata sold to Honda Motor Co. Ltd., Toyota Motor Corp., Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. and Mazda Motor Corp., the U.S. Department of Justice said Thursday.

The indictment is a result of a four-year probe conducted by the U.S. and Japanese governments as well as the European Union. Takata executives have also pled guilty to other charges and paid hefty fines in connection with the price fixing investigation, which has also involved several other suppler companies that feed part to American and Japanese auto parts manufacturers operating in the U.S. (more…)

More turmoil at Takata.

Embattled Japanese airbag supplier Takata is shaking up its top management team – even as top managers take pay cuts of as much as 50%.

But the company is so far maintaining its position that there is no need to expand the recall of airbags linked to a potentially deadly problem that can result in the devices spewing shrapnel into the passenger compartment after a crash.

As part of the shake-up, Takata Corp. President Stefan Stocker will step aside, his duties being assumed by Chairman Shigehisa Takada, heir to the founders of the company. Stocker will remain a member of the Takata board.

The recall scandal continues to rock the auto industry with new and damaging revelations.

The latest company to have its reputation seriously smeared is Japanese automaker Honda, which admits it failed to file more than 1,700 accident reports with federal safety regulators as required by law.

NHTSA Hits Honda with Second Demand for Takata Info

Agency compelling maker to provide documents, testimony.

NHTSA's David Friedman demanded Honda provide documents and sworn testimony about Takata for the second time this week.

Federal regulators continue to demonstrate their renewed commitment to enforcement by demanding Honda produce more information about its use and knowledge of Takata Corp.’s defective airbags.

The push yesterday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is the second time this week the agency has pushed Honda “to produce documents and answer questions under oath relevant to our ongoing investigation into defective air bags made by Takata,” according to David Friedman, NHTSA Deputy Administrator.

Takata Uncertain When It Will Have Enough Parts for Recall

Partsmaker facing serious financial impact due to action.

Takata isn't sure how long it will take to manufacture enough replacements for its defective airbags.

Despite pressure from automakers and automotive regulators, embattled Japanese safety systems supplier Takata says it has no idea how soon it will be able to provide the parts needed to complete last month’s recall of 7.8 million vehicles due to potentially deadly airbags.

The company acknowledges it is facing what could become the second class-action lawsuit related to a recall that has so far been linked to four deaths and a number of injuries. And a Takata official says the supplier is discussing with its customers how it might have to help them cover the massive costs associated with the airbag recall.
