Nissan Gets its Kicks With New SUV

New crossover is “gateway” to the maker’s expanding line-up.

by on Nov.29, 2017

Nissan unveiled its new Kicks crossover vehicle targeted at millennials moving up a vehicle.

Nissan hopes buyers will get their Kicks on Route 66 – as well as I-405, the New York Throughway and pretty much everywhere else – in the maker’s newest sport-utility vehicle.

The 2018 Nissan Kicks becomes the latest in an expanding line-up of crossover models the Japanese maker has been rolling out and arrives at what would seem the perfect time, with utes now accounting for nearly half of the overall U.S. new vehicle market.

Industry News!

Targeting millennials and others who might otherwise opt for an entry-level sedan or hatchback, the Nissan Kicks targets “buyers moving up,” and, said U.S. sales and marketing chief Dan Mohncke, will be “the new gateway to our CUV line-up.”

Kia Gets Stonic With its New, Subcompact Crossover

Korean carmaker’s answer to Hyundai Kona set for sale in late 2017.

by on Jun.07, 2017

Kia sketches out plans for its entry into the subcompact SUV segment with new Stonic.

Even before we had a chance to check out the three renderings of Kia’s new subcompact crossover, the Korean carmaker’s press release got our minds working overtime. What exactly is a “Stonic”? What could it be trying to convey with that curious name – and how might it resonate with consumers.

“Strong” and “Supersonic,” perhaps, or “Speedy” and “Bionic”? Well, we were getting warm. The name actually blends the words “Speedy” and “Tonic,” it turns out. And, if nothing else, we’re betting Kia’s legal team likes it because it’s likely not going to conflict with any existing trademarks anywhere in the world.

The Kia Stonic appears to be the smaller Korean carmaker’s answer to bigger sibling Hyundai’s new Kona – of which we got a pair of teaser images just a few days ago. Both models are believed to share the same, underlying platform as the redesigned Hyundai Accent coming out later this year.

Life’s a Breeze with VW T-Cross Cabrio Concept

VW surprises with Polo-sized SUV convertible.

by on Mar.01, 2016

VW was expected to show a small SUV at the Geneva Motor Show -- but not one with a ragtop.

Volkswagen got a jump on the Geneva Motor Show Monday night, giving a standing-room crowd of automotive journalists a special preview of a quirky little SUV/convertible concept it has dubbed the T-Cross Breeze.

It’s hard to tell just how serious the maker is about putting a ragtop ute on the road. But it’s all but certain to come up with a production model in more traditional form. The German automaker has made it very clear it intends to fill the gaps in its line-up at a time when buyers around the world are trading in their conventional sedans, coupes and hatchbacks for sport and crossover-utility vehicles.

Auto Show News as it Happens!

“The T-Cross Breeze reflects the new start for our brand,” suggested VW brand design chief Klaus Bischoff. The concept, he added, “is a teaser for the most compact sport utility vehicle that Volkswagen plans to make – and the nucleus of a new SUV and convertible design in the compact sector.”

Scion will show the rest of its new concept vehicle at the L.A. Auto Show on November 18th.

Scion is sizzling. After adding two new all-new models to its traditionally modest line-up this year, Toyota’s youth-oriented brand will preview another all-new offering at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show.

While the teaser image the maker has released doesn’t provide much guidance, insiders have dropped broad hints that the brand is getting set to add its first utility vehicle, and the Scion show car is based on the new Toyota CH-R.
