Subaru Plans More Hybrids, Battery Cars – Eventually

Despite first HEV, don’t expect more electric power anytime soon.

Subaru debuted its XV Crosstrek Hybrid at the New York Auto Show.

After a series of false starts, Subaru finally has its first gas-electric model, the XV Crosstrek Hybrid, making its formal debut at this week’s New York International Auto Show. Expect to see more hybrids, as well as an all-electric model, possibly even a plug-in hybrid model, the Japanese maker’s top U.S. executive told – but not anytime soon.

Between consumer demand and regulatory requirements, Subaru is being pressed to expand its “electrification” effort, said Tom Doll, recently promoted to president of Subaru of America. But as with the effort that finally brought the Crosstrek to market, Subaru isn’t in a rush.

“You probably won’t see more from us until around 2016 or 2017,” Doll explained, following the official roll out of the XV Crosstrek Hybrid.

A Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid in testing.

Little Subaru is nothing if not creative, coming up with some groundbreaking new designs over the years, such as the Outback and WRX. But it’s late to the party when it comes to hybrid-electric vehicles, a costly development challenge facing most small automakers.

Now, the Japanese maker is finally weighing in with a gas-electric model of its own. The Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid will make its debut at the upcoming New York Auto Show – alongside what it is billing as an “all-new performance concept car.”

Could that be the next-generation version of the Subaru WRX? That’s what a lot of folks are hoping, but the maker is mum on the subject.

Subaru isn’t saying much about the Crosstrek, either. The production model is based on the earlier XV Crosstrek concept vehicle.  It is expected to use one of the maker’s familiar boxer engines mated to a small battery-drive system, both power sources linked through Subaru’s time-tested Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system.

Subaru will bring the new, 2012 Impreza to the upcoming New York Auto Show.

It’s going to be a busy couple press days at the upcoming New York Auto Show, Subaru the latest to reveal plans for a major launch in the Big Apple.

The automotive arm of Fuji Heavy Industries will roll into Jacob Javits Center with an all-new version of the compact Impreza, both in 4- and 5-door configurations, it promises, the image shown here of the sedan.

The design is modern, if not exactly breakthrough, featuring a coupe-like curved roofline and more muscular flared wheel wells, front and back.  Narrower headlamps and a revised grille provide a generally more sporty look.  Industry reports have been suggesting the new car should deliver a bit more length and width improving what has been one of the more cramped offerings in the compact segment.

But what could be the real draw is the promise by Subaru that the new Impreza will yield an estimated 36 miles per gallon on the highway.   As it stands, that would make the new 2012 model the most fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive passenger car on the U.S. market.
