First Drive: 2015 Subaru Legacy

Aiming for the mainstream.

by on May.21, 2014

Subaru goes more mainstream with the 2015 Legacy.

Subaru has long been one of the best-kept secrets in the U.S. automotive market, a brand with a loyal but limited niche following. But with the launch of the all-new, sixth-generation Legacy sedan, the Japanese maker is taking aim at a more mainstream audience, and midsize buyers would be wise to put it on their radar screen.

When the new sedan was unveiled during last month’s New York Auto Show it marked the 25th anniversary of the Legacy nameplate. Like the rest of the Subaru line-up, it has long been popular in Snowbelt cities like Boston and Denver, and has developed an especially strong following among such targeted groups as young, active outdoor fans, nurses and even the gay and lesbian community.

In Drive!

But while the 2015 Subaru Legacy maintains some of the basic features that have long appealed to its loyalists – such as the brand’s Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system – the latest-generation sedan adds plenty of other appealing attributes, including what is now one of the industry’s best CVT gearboxes, great fuel economy, and a roomy, well-appointed interior. The new Legacy also gets the latest update of Subaru’s camera-based EyeSight safety system.

With Launch of New Legacy, Subaru Sets its Sights Higher

But as it goes more mainstream, maker faces new challenges.

by on May.19, 2014

The 2015 Subaru Legacy making its NY Auto Show debut in April.

When it comes to the road less traveled, Subaru has usually gone its own way, a strategy that has long paid off for the little Japanese maker – and the only manufacturer to continuously grow its sales in the U.S. during even the depths of the industry’s worst recession in decades.

Beyond the Headlines!

Now, with the launch of an all-new Legacy topping off an unprecedented product blitz, Subaru is hoping to do it again this year. But as it grows ever larger, some are asking whether the very nature of the company may change, creating new challenges for Subaru going forward.

“When the industry hit the recession, Subaru took off,” boasted Jeff Walters, the maker’s U.S. sales manager, during a weekend media drive of the new Legacy.

Finally, it seems, we have real specs to share, rather than endless rumors and speculation.

So, what do we have to reveal? For one thing, the production car is clearly not quite as aggressive as the concept vehicle – nothing surprising there, of course. And the 2015 Legacy gets two more doors than the LA show car.

Subaru Fights Legacy of Staid Styling with New Concept

Show car provides glimpse into future design of sedan.

by on Nov.21, 2013

Subaru is looking generate some excitement about the Legacy with the concept it recently introduced.

Subaru celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Legacy sedan by unveiling a new Legacy “concept” vehicle that, as expected, distances the stalwart from its sedate styling of the past, but is also closer to production than pure concept.

Tomohiko Ikeda, executive vice president of product development at Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industry, said that the concept “demonstrated the future” of where the Legacy sedan will be going.

It was a sentiment later seconded by Michael McHale, Subaru’s chief spokesman, described the aggressive new design as “indicative” of the styling expected of next generation Legacy. (more…)

Subaru, Lexus Tops at Retaining Residual Value

Japanese lead the pack though Audi also comes on strong.

by on Nov.16, 2011

The 2012 Subaru Legacy tops the list among midsize models when it comes to anticipated residual value.

Japanese brands, though facing increased competition, continue to be best at holding onto their residual – or trade-in – values, according to a new study, with Subaru topping the list among mainstream manufacturers while Lexus led the line among luxury brands.

Japanese makers topped 10 of the 19 individual vehicle segments in the 13th Annual Residual Value Awards presented by ALG, long known as the Automotive Leasing Guide.  But Audi, which took the lead in three categories, had more individual segment wins than any other manufacturer.

In the Know!

The study is significant in that it suggests which automotive marques will do the best job of maintaining value when it’s time to trade in or to return a leased vehicle.

“Residual value is a great indicator of brand strength which in turn contributes to greater sales and profitability,” said Raj Sundaram for ALG. “We have seen a strong focus this year on producing high-quality products with great pricing and packaging delivering real value for vehicle buyers.”
