Subaru’s LA Concept is a Thinly Disguised Impreza

Expect to see the Sedan Concept again soon.

The Subaru Impreza Sedan Concept is expected to be pretty close to what rolls into showrooms.

If you have the sense you’ve seen the new Subaru Impreza Concept before, well, you wouldn’t be entirely wrong. It’s been only a few weeks since the Japanese maker unveiled another Impreza Concept at the Tokyo Motor Show.

That one, however, was a hatchback take on the popular model line. For the 2015 L.A. Auto Show, Subaru is back with the Impreza Sedan Concept, a yet-closer version of what we’ll soon see rolling into U.S. showrooms.

What a concept!

At the Tokyo Show, Subaru officials promised that the concept hinted at “the design direction not only of the new Impreza but of Subaru’s future models as a whole.” Now, they add, the next-generation Impreza will be the first in a series of products to emerge from the company’s Prominence 2020 strategic plan. The Subaru Impreza Concept was shown in 5-door form, but a 4-door will soon follow.

These days, automakers frequently use “concept cars” to set the stage for a new model that may be coming in just a matter of months. Often times, they’ll give the show cars a catchy, if misleading name to keep media scribes and the public guessing. Subaru didn’t even bother to go that far as it rolled out what it insisted was just a “concept” version of the Impreza at the Tokyo Motor Show on Wednesday.

Sure, a few of the details will likely be changed, but not by much, Subaru acknowledging that the show car reveals “the design direction not only of the new Impreza but of Subaru’s future models as a whole.”

What a Concept!

And for good reason, it turns out. The Subaru Impreza set to reach showrooms next year as a 2017 model will introduce the Japanese maker’s new global architecture, a platform that will be shared by virtually all of its products going forward.

The Subaru Impreza Concept - the shape of things to come?

So you thought you knew the Subaru Impreza? Think again.

Up til now, Subaru has not been a maker known for coming up with especially ground-breaking styling. But that never mattered much with its group of loyal buyers.

The joint project with Saab that brought Subaru the Tribeca might have been distinctive, but it was anything but inspiring either. But new Subarus will be different – at least if the Impreza Concept that is making its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show is any indication.

Backed by the Japanese maker’s new global brand statement, ‘Confidence in-motion,’ the sporty and elegant design marks the direction that Fuji Heavy Industry says it will take, going forward, with upcoming Subaru models.

The concept also shows that aerodynamics will play a larger role in the design of the cherished Subaru brand, which has lately been scoring on top of  customer satisfaction surveys in the US and Europe for many years now.
