A rose by any other name? For most American motorists, the word, “wagon” carries with it a whiff of rotten eggs. So, most manufacturers either avoid the two-box body style entirely or hope to find a more pleasing alternative, such as Jaguar’s “Sportbrake.”

We’re getting a look at the next wagon, er, Sportbrake to come from the British automaker in a teaser released this week. It gives us an overhead image of the new model, as well as an outline painted onto the main court at the tennis mecca of Wimbledon.

Hitch Yer Wagons!

Whatever you wish to call it, expected to see the new Jaguar XF Sportbrake join the maker’s line-up in Europe a few months from now. And for those Americans who love a wagon, whatever it’s called, it’ll finally make its way to U.S. dealerships as well, this time around.

Mercedes Planning to Add Wagon Version of New E-Class

E400 Wagon set to join sedan in U.S. showrooms in early 2017.

by on Jun.06, 2016

The new Mercedes E400 Wagon will reach U.S. showrooms in "early 2017," says the maker.

SUV and crossovers may be the big trend in the U.S. market, but Mercedes-Benz isn’t ready to walk away from the classic station wagon, with a new version of the E-Class set to go on sale “by early 2017,” the maker revealed today.

The German maker will be among a dwindling few brands to continue offering that body style when the 2017 Mercedes-Benz E400 Wagon comes to market. But there remains a small but surprisingly loyal core of buyers that Daimler’s luxury brand thinks it can continue tapping into.

Product News!

“The new Wagon is as dynamic as the Mercedes-Benz brand and as spacious as our customers expect,” said Ola Kallenius, the board member in charge of Mercedes marketing and sales. A key selling point, he suggested, will be the fact that the E400 will feature “all the innovations of the new E-Class,” which Mercedes claims is “the most intelligent executive sedan in the world.”

First Look: Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake

Revisiting the wagon.

by on Nov.26, 2014

The new Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake may be what's needed to change the opinions of U.S. drivers about wagons.

Manufacturers have tried going the semantic root: dubbing them shooting brakes, estates, crossovers and cross country. But Americans have shown an uncanny ability to sniff out a station wagon and turn up their noses – which is all the more ironic considering wagons make up one of the hottest segments in Europe.

Could the new Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake bridge that gap? The more immediate question is whether the German maker will try. It isn’t yet saying whether it will import the “two-box” take on its popular new compact luxury model. But these initial images suggest it might be worth a try.

Gain Traction!

“Like its big brother, the CLS Shooting Brake, the CLA Shooting Brake is targeted at active customers who are looking outside of the mainstream for a car that impresses with a high utility value,” says Ola Källenius, who oversees Mercedes marketing and sales operations. (more…)
