Kia Gets Stonic With its New, Subcompact Crossover

Korean carmaker’s answer to Hyundai Kona set for sale in late 2017.

by on Jun.07, 2017

Kia sketches out plans for its entry into the subcompact SUV segment with new Stonic.

Even before we had a chance to check out the three renderings of Kia’s new subcompact crossover, the Korean carmaker’s press release got our minds working overtime. What exactly is a “Stonic”? What could it be trying to convey with that curious name – and how might it resonate with consumers.

“Strong” and “Supersonic,” perhaps, or “Speedy” and “Bionic”? Well, we were getting warm. The name actually blends the words “Speedy” and “Tonic,” it turns out. And, if nothing else, we’re betting Kia’s legal team likes it because it’s likely not going to conflict with any existing trademarks anywhere in the world.

The Kia Stonic appears to be the smaller Korean carmaker’s answer to bigger sibling Hyundai’s new Kona – of which we got a pair of teaser images just a few days ago. Both models are believed to share the same, underlying platform as the redesigned Hyundai Accent coming out later this year.

Now Badged Toyota, C-HR Crossover to Make Debut at LA Auto Show

Compact model to challenge the likes of Honda HR-V, Nissan Juke.

by on Nov.03, 2016

The little C-HR will be back in LA wearing a different badge than it bore at the 2015 show.

We got a first look at the little C-HR concept vehicle at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, and it has bounced back and forth across the Atlantic a number of times. But the production version is finally set to make its debut at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show two weeks from today.

Expect to see a few key changes from the original show car. Some of the radical angles and edges are likely to be softened a bit. And it’s not clear whether there will be a hybrid drivetrain available, unlike the original concept which was said to share the familiar Prius Hybrid Synergy Drive.

Auto Show News!

But the most significant change – at least for the U.S. market, might take a sharp eye to spot. When the C-HR concept landed at the 2015 L.A. Auto Show, it was wearing a Scion badge. With that youth-oriented brand now tossed onto the automotive scrapheap, the little crossover now will be wearing the Toyota logo all over the world.

Five CUVs Flunk New Overlap Crash Test; only Subaru Forester Rated “Good”

Test designed to replicate real-world crashes.

by on May.16, 2013

The Subaru Forester was specifically designed to meet the new small overlap crash test.

Five popular small crossover-utility vehicles failed the new overlap crash test designed to simulate an impact with a pole or other narrow object — one of the more common sources of highway fatalities.

Only the 2014 Subaru Forester passed the test, earning a “good” rating from the trade group the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport landed an “acceptable” rating.

Among the vehicles to fail the test, earning a “poor rating,” were the recently updated Ford Escape, the Jeep Patriot, the Buick Encore, the Kia Sportage and the Hyundai Tucson. The Jeep Wrangler, Nissan Rogue, Mazda CX-5, Volkswagen Tiguan and Honda CR-V were among those compact crossovers to earn a “marginal” rating.
