Carroll Shelby Dead at 89

Among auto legends he was one tall Texan.

Carroll Shelby with the Mustang that bears his name.

Slow was not part of his vocabulary.  Carroll Shelby operated at one of three speeds: fast, faster, fastest, and even a serious heart ailment failed to keep him down for very long.

The legendary automotive racer and raconteur passed away over the weekend after a lingering illness but, at 89, the tall Texan in the black hat lived far longer than he ever expected to — after getting a new heart and a variety of other transplants occasionally comparing himself to a battered old car.

Though he was many things in his nine decades – from winning racer to pilot to chicken farmer – the son of a Texas mailman was likely best known for lending his name to some of the fastest “pony” cars ever built, transforming the Ford Mustang into an icon of American muscle.

Shelby American Rolls Out 950-hp Mustang

A real prancing pony.

The Shelby 1000 makes 950 hp on the street, 1,100 on the track.

When Carroll Shelby says he’s got a new muscle car on tap, take him seriously.  The legendary automotive raconteur’s latest take on the Mustang will deliver enough tire-squealing torque and horsepower to make gold-chained Ferraristas duck for cover.

That’s 950 hp, to be precise, only slightly less than the $1.4 million Bugatti Veyron ultracar makes.  And that’s for the street legal version of the Shelby 1000 that will take its bow at the New York Auto Show next week.  The track-ready pony car bumps the number all the way up to 1,100 horsepower.

Score Big!

Since the former race car driver-cum-automotive entrepreneur first teamed up with Lee Iacocca, back in the mid-‘60s, Shelby has never shied away from the challenge of pumping a little more power out of a Mustang.  The latest offering takes things one very large step beyond the last Mustang upgrade from Shelby American, the GT500 Super Snake “only” able to make a measly 800 hp.

The distinctive 50th Anniversary Shelby Mustang.

Carroll Shelby is the Energizer Bunny of the automotive world.  He’s had his heart and any number of other vital organs replaced over the decades but keeps on ticking – his car company, Shelby American, continuing to roll out new products.

A half-century after making a name, first as a race driver, and then as the producer of the legendary Shelby Cobra, Shelby American is getting ready to celebrate with a 50th Anniversary Tour – and the launch of three new versions of the Shelby-tuned Mustang.

It is, the maker noted during an appearance in Detroit, the first time it unveiled a new product at a conventional auto show.

“The golden anniversary is a remarkable milestone,” said John Luft, president of Shelby American, “many people did not think this company would make it that long.”
