Most powerful, most lavishly equipped production model ever.

by on Mar.30, 2015

The new Range Rover SVAutobiography has a name that’s not only a bit easier to pronounce but is also expected to be a little easier on the wallet. But it nonetheless will be the most powerful production model ever, with its optional supercharged V-8 making a neck-snapping 542 horsepower.

He may have favored an old Aston in the most recent Bond film, but actor Daniel Craig rolled into New York behind the wheel of a new Range Rover Sport on Tuesday evening.

There was a time when new offerings from Britain’s Land Rover rolled out at a glacial pace.  Perhaps it’s global warming but the maker is rapidly ramping up its rollout schedule.  With the wildly successful launches of the Evoque and Range Rover remake behind it, the Brits are again making news at the New York Auto Show.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have your newest model show up for a packed preview with actor Daniel Craig, better known as 007, behind the wheel.

Craig’s stunt almost overshadowed the introduction of the the completely remade 2014 Range Rover Sport, a car the British maker describes as “the fastest, most agile and responsive Land Rover ever.”

Roughly 6 inches shorter, 2 inches lower and 100 pounds lighter than the recently launched Range Rover, the Sport has undergone a complete maker for 2014.  It migrates from a largely steel body-on-frame platform to a decidedly lighter aluminum unibody architecture.

Is New Range Rover the Last of Another Era?

Is a downsized version in the works?

by on Sep.27, 2012

The 2013 Range Rover makes a splashy entrance at the Paris Motor Show.

The world is rapidly changing for automakers and nowhere is that more obvious than in the once-huge SUV segment.  Sales peaked at more than 3 million in the U.S. a decade or so back and have been sliding ever since.  Only a handful of models continue to exist in the classic, truck-based SUV segment.  But don’t think utes are going away.

Certainly not the range-topping Range Rover which is making its formal public debut at this year’s Paris Motor Show.  The flagship of the British Land Rover, the fourth-generation Range Rover nonetheless has adapted to rapidly changing market realities.  Among other things, it’s nearly a half-ton lighter than the outgoing model and by next year buyers in many markets will be able to order one with an all-new plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

Nonetheless, Land Rover is eyeing big changes – especially in the wake of the successful launch of its Range Rover Evoque last year.  The maker’s first crossover-based model is now its biggest seller, outperforming even the most optimistic expectations for the downsized CUV.
