The 2-Door is Back: Range Rover Reveals New SV Coupe

Ultra-luxurious model to be hand-assembled by Special Operations unit.

by on Jan.24, 2018

Land Rover is giving a glimpse of the a new two-door "coupe" concept for the Geneva Motor Show. Just 999 two-doors will be built.

There’s no disputing the fact that coupes have largely fallen out of favor. It doesn’t matter whether you’re talking about passenger cars or light trucks, though “coupe-like” designs are hot, two-door models are largely forgotten.

But not entirely. There’s still a small market, it seems, that the folks at Land Rover hope to take advantage of. Along with the two-door Evoque, they’re about to add a coupe version of the big Range Rover, the first time they’ve done so since 1994.

Product News!

“The Range Rover SV Coupe is a highly compelling design with peerless refinement and uncompromised sophistication from its breathtaking exterior proportions to its sumptuous, beautifully appointed interior,” declared the ever-confident Gerry McGovern, Land Rover chief design officer, in a statement. “This is a vehicle that will resonate on an emotional level.” (more…)

Range Rover Puts Evoque Convertible Through its Paces

Ragtop SUV caught during testing.

by on Oct.05, 2015

Land Rover claims it will maintain the off-road capabilities of the Evoque in its ragtop form.

Since its launch in 2012, the little Range Rover Evoque has become the Land Rover brand’s best-selling model ever, so it’s no surprise the British maker is looking to expand Evoque’s appeal. But it remains to be seen what sort of reaction there’ll be when a soft-top version of the compact ute comes to market early next year.

No surprise, Land Rover is hoping to build interest and expectations with a few shots of the Range Rover Evoque Convertible being put through its paces at the brand’s proving grounds near Eastnor Castle, in Herefordshire, UK.

In the Know!

“Land Rover prides itself on being a class leader when it comes to all-terrain capability and the Evoque Convertible is no different,” said Mike Cross, Land Rover Chief Engineer, in a statement accompanying these images.

VW Scandal a “Black Eye” for US Diesel Market

Sales likely to collapse; long-term revival uncertain.

by on Sep.24, 2015

The 2015 Golf TDI is one of the diesels VW has temporarily stopped selling in the US.

For motorists looking for sporty but environmentally friendly alternatives to sluggish hybrids, diesels like the Volkswagen Jetta TDI has been a welcome addition to the U.S. market. The ability to deliver real performance along with high mileage is one reason why diesel sales have continued to grow even as demand for gas-electric models has plunged in the face of cheap gas.

But that growth spurt is likely to sputter out, industry insiders warn, in the wake of the Volkswagen cheating scandal. Last week, the Environmental Protection Agency ordered the recall of 482,000 VW diesel models, revealing that the maker had used software to scam the government’s emissions tests.

In real world situations, vehicles like the Jetta TDI actually produce up to 40 times the permissible level of noxious emissions.

“This is another black eye for diesels,” said Mike Jackson, CEO of Florida-based AutoNation, the country’s largest automotive retailer. “You now have a passionate constituency that feels betrayed.”

First Drive: 2016 Range Rover Sport Td6

No-compromise diesel is fuel-efficient, quick and powerful.

by on Sep.02, 2015

In the U.S. both the 2016 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport now offer a Td6 diesel option.

The rock and gravel path seems to vanish as we approach the edge of the cliff. But we’re determined not to give up. So, tapping a few buttons on the center console , we press on – and over, the big SUV maintaining complete control all the way down.

A moment later, we come to an equally daunting challenge. The only way to continue is to climb up and over a slick wall of granite. It’s the sort of obstacle that might leave other vehicles stranded. But not the 2016 Range Rover Sport Td6. We point the noise, tap another button on the steering wheel and lift our feet off the pedals. Requiring only a little guidance on the steering wheel, the Range Rover begins its climb as confidently as a mountain goat.

The British SUV has long had a reputation as one of the most competent trailblazers you could find. The 2016 model takes things to an entirely new level. And with the addition of the first diesel powertrain bound for the U.S., the 2016 Range Rover Sport Td6 adds to the formula unexpectedly compelling fuel economy.

Land Rover Betting Big on Diesels

U.S. Range Rover models set to get first “oil-burners.”

by on Sep.01, 2015

The 2016 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport (shown here) will offer new diesel options for the first time.

Even the most affluent motorists want to improve their fuel economy, it seems, and that has Land Rover betting it can expand its position in the U.S. market by adding a new, high-mileage diesel for its Range Rover line.

The new six-cylinder turbodiesel will deliver a 32% bump in combined fuel economy compared with the maker’s current gasoline-powered V-6, while delivering more towing capacity and nearly the same level of acceleration, Land Rover officials announced during a preview in Barcelona, Spain.

News from Around the World!

For the maker, there are several potentials benefits: adding the higher-mileage technology will make it easier to meet increasingly tough fuel economy mandates, while also drawing in new buyers to the brand.

Range Rover Pushes the Extremes with New SVAutobiography

Most powerful, most lavishly equipped production model ever.

by on Mar.30, 2015

The new Range Rover SVAutobiography takes the place of last year's Long-Wheelbase Autobiography Black Holland & Holland edition.

Range Rover has been pushing the extremes. Last year’s limited-edition Range Rover Long-Wheelbase Autobiography Black Holland & Holland edition not only had one of the longest names ever to wrap around the entire back end of a vehicle, but also a price tag to match, at $285,000.

The new Range Rover SVAutobiography has a name that’s not only a bit easier to pronounce but is also expected to be a little easier on the wallet. But it nonetheless will be the most powerful production model ever, with its optional supercharged V-8 making a neck-snapping 542 horsepower.

Set to go on sale in 2016.

by on Mar.02, 2015

Land Rover has been testing its new Range Rover Evoque Convertible in the tunnels of London's massive unfinished subway project.

Apparently, the folks working on London’s massive new subway program, the 26-mile Crossrail tunnels, know how to keep a secret. Even as they’ve been working away on Europe’s biggest infrastructure project, 130 feet underground, British maker Land Rover has been using the partially completed tunnels to test out its new Range Rover Evoque Convertible.

The maker today confirmed the unusual SUV convertible will go on sale in 2016, though it isn’t saying much more about the project beyond what one can pick out in a short film taken while the Evoque Convertible was being driven through the Crossrail tunnels.

by on Feb.18, 2014
