Land Rover Latest to Battle Chinese Over Car Clones

Jiangling Motors sued over Range Rover Evoque knock-off.

by on Jun.06, 2016

An Evoque by any other name? JLR sues Chinese maker Jiangling over Land Wind X7.

It takes a sharp eye to spot the differences: the subtle curve of the rear spoiler, the more rounded front grille and the slight changes to the taillights. But as far as consumers are concerned, the thing that likely matters most is that the Jiangling Landwind X7 costs barely one third as much as the Range Rover Evoque.”

And that has Britain’s Jaguar-Land Rover seeing red as it faces yet another Chinese knock-off blatantly stealing some of its business. That has been a problem faced by a number of foreign automakers – from little Smart, which has seen a Chinese clone of its Smart Fortwo, up to Ford, which has had its F-Series pickup copied down to the tie-downs in its cargo bed.

Stay in the Know!

JLR is aggressively pursuing a legal case, and it isn’t stopping at China’s borders, winning an injunction preventing the Chinese company from selling the X7 in Brazil, where Jiangling recently appointed an importer. But observers say the British firm could be in for a tough battle. A number of other makers have failed to get the courts to take action in similar lawsuits over the years.

Range Rover Puts Evoque Convertible Through its Paces

Ragtop SUV caught during testing.

Land Rover claims it will maintain the off-road capabilities of the Evoque in its ragtop form.

Since its launch in 2012, the little Range Rover Evoque has become the Land Rover brand’s best-selling model ever, so it’s no surprise the British maker is looking to expand Evoque’s appeal. But it remains to be seen what sort of reaction there’ll be when a soft-top version of the compact ute comes to market early next year.

No surprise, Land Rover is hoping to build interest and expectations with a few shots of the Range Rover Evoque Convertible being put through its paces at the brand’s proving grounds near Eastnor Castle, in Herefordshire, UK.

“Land Rover prides itself on being a class leader when it comes to all-terrain capability and the Evoque Convertible is no different,” said Mike Cross, Land Rover Chief Engineer, in a statement accompanying these images.

Range Rover Revealing Refreshed Evoque in Geneva

A challenging update.

by on Feb.24, 2015

Range Rover's best-selling model, the Evoque gets a facelift for 2016.

As its best-selling model, Land Rover has a lot riding on the fashion-forward Range Rover Evoque. And it hopes to keep momentum building with the upcoming launch of the 2016 Evoque facelift at the Geneva Motor Show.

First introduced as a 2012 model, the Range Rover Evoque served as the British maker’s first entry into the booming compact luxury utility vehicle market. And it proved an instant hit with its blend of functionality, performance and a funky, coupe-like design. Sales last year continued their upward trajectory, in the U.S. Evoque sales rising 9% to 12,440.

“Our challenge has been to evolve the Range Rover Evoque design without diluting its distinctive character,” Land Rover Design Director Gerry McGovern said, ahead of the Geneva debut of the 2016 refresh. (more…)

Range Rover Reveals a Lighter, Leaner 2014 Sport

“The fastest, most agile and responsive Land Rover ever," maker claims.

by on Mar.26, 2013

He may have favored an old Aston in the most recent Bond film, but actor Daniel Craig rolled into New York behind the wheel of a new Range Rover Sport on Tuesday evening.

There was a time when new offerings from Britain’s Land Rover rolled out at a glacial pace.  Perhaps it’s global warming but the maker is rapidly ramping up its rollout schedule.  With the wildly successful launches of the Evoque and Range Rover remake behind it, the Brits are again making news at the New York Auto Show.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have your newest model show up for a packed preview with actor Daniel Craig, better known as 007, behind the wheel.

Craig’s stunt almost overshadowed the introduction of the the completely remade 2014 Range Rover Sport, a car the British maker describes as “the fastest, most agile and responsive Land Rover ever.”

Roughly 6 inches shorter, 2 inches lower and 100 pounds lighter than the recently launched Range Rover, the Sport has undergone a complete maker for 2014.  It migrates from a largely steel body-on-frame platform to a decidedly lighter aluminum unibody architecture.

Compared to the previous-generation Range Rover Sport it sheds about 800 pounds of mass, depending on the specific model, with a base weight of 4727 pounds with a supercharged V-6 powertrain.

The maker promises that will translate into a more agile and fuel efficient model that can now be ordered in standard five-passenger configuration or with an optional 2-seat third row for “occasional use.”

Is New Range Rover the Last of Another Era?

Is a downsized version in the works?

by on Sep.27, 2012

The 2013 Range Rover makes a splashy entrance at the Paris Motor Show.

The world is rapidly changing for automakers and nowhere is that more obvious than in the once-huge SUV segment.  Sales peaked at more than 3 million in the U.S. a decade or so back and have been sliding ever since.  Only a handful of models continue to exist in the classic, truck-based SUV segment.  But don’t think utes are going away.

Certainly not the range-topping Range Rover which is making its formal public debut at this year’s Paris Motor Show.  The flagship of the British Land Rover, the fourth-generation Range Rover nonetheless has adapted to rapidly changing market realities.  Among other things, it’s nearly a half-ton lighter than the outgoing model and by next year buyers in many markets will be able to order one with an all-new plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

Nonetheless, Land Rover is eyeing big changes – especially in the wake of the successful launch of its Range Rover Evoque last year.  The maker’s first crossover-based model is now its biggest seller, outperforming even the most optimistic expectations for the downsized CUV.

2013 Range Rover Makes Official Debut

A lightweight that carries plenty of heft.

by on Sep.06, 2012

The latest in the Range Rover series -- which was first introduced in 1970.

Land Rover isn’t dancing around the facts when it describes the new 2013 Range Rover as the most important product it will be bringing out over the next few years.  Though sales may be dwarfed by the wildly successful new Evoque, the Range Rover that debuted today at London’s Royal Ballet School is the model that sets the standard for the British marque.

And by radically slashing the weight of the new model, Land Rover shows it can bring the classic SUV into a new era where mass and mileage become increasingly critical.

Range Rover Spices it Up with Evoque Victoria Beckham Edition

"I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want."

Spice Girls need wheels, too, it seems.

“Tell me what you want, what you really, really want,” sang former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham before she signed on as a spokes-celebrity for Land Rover.  And now, apparently, she’s ready to answer her own question.

Or, more accurately, Land Rover is, the maker revealing the new Evoque Victoria Beckham Edition during a preview ahead of the opening of the 2012 Beijing Motor Show.

Land Rover Going Topless in Geneva

Maker to unveil Evoq convertible concept.

by on Feb.24, 2012

Range Rover will show a convertible concept based on the Evoque at the Geneva Motor Show next month.

Mention the idea of a Land Rover convertible and you’re likely to get a puzzled look or even an outright guffaw in response. But The British SUV maker defied conventional wisdom when it rolled out the topless DC100 concept during last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show and it’s about to take a step further with a show car that seems certain to preview a production ragtop.

Land Rover is the latest in a flood of maker’s to telegraph its plans for the upcoming Geneva Motor Show and its likely to generate plenty of interest with the reveal of the Range Rover Evoque Convertible Concept developed by design chief Gerry McGovern’s team based on the 3-door Evoque Coupe.

The hardtop recently named the North American Truck of the Year – along with an assortment of other awards – McGovern insists, “The Range Rover Evoque lends itself beautifully to the idea of a convertible.”

He notes that the concept is “not a traditional convertible design execution – instead we have worked with the balance of the Range Rover Evoque’s lines to retain its distinctive shape and create something that is unique and, we believe, highly desirable.”
