Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Drives Off with Green Truck of the Year

Truck beats out ballyhooed all-aluminum F-150 for the title.

by on Nov.07, 2014

The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel captured the Green Car Journal's "Green Truck of the Year" award for 2015.

The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel walked off with another big award, this time the 2015 Green Truck of the Year from the Green Car Journal, which has been singling out the most fuel-efficient vehicles in the U.S. for more than two decades.

The Ram beat out four other trucks, including another Ram – the 1500 HFE – to win the honor. The other finalists included Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon and the Ford F-150. The magazine made the announcement at the 46th annual San Antonio Auto & Truck Show.

While pickups aren’t normally associated with the word “green,” auto companies have been working diligently at making trucks more fuel efficient. In addition to the EcoDiesel, Ford has been heavily promoting its EcoBoost-powered F-150s in recent years and Chevy has been pumping up the mileage figures for its full-size pickups too. (more…)

Ram Diesel Claims Lead in Truck Fuel Economy

But will Ford take the lead with aluminum F-150?

by on Feb.04, 2014

The Ram EcoDiesel is leaving competitors behind with its 28 mpg highway rating.

In the race for supremacy in the enormously profitable full-size pickup truck market fuel economy has become an increasingly competitive issue – and is likely to become even more important going forward, so makers that once put horsepower and towing limits atop their ads are now just as likely to emphasize mpg.

That’s meant some significant changes in truck design, with a growing emphasis on so-called “lightweighting,” and the emergence of a new generation of higher performance V-6s, such as the Ford EcoBoost V6 that has left competitors domestic and foreign scrambling.

Fuel for Thought!

But Chrysler has struck back with its new Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, landing a string of kudos, including the coveted Motor Trend Truck of the Year. And now, Chrysler is claiming what could be an even more significant victory, the EPA giving the diesel version of the Ram a car-like 28 mpg Highway Cycle mileage rating – the best ever recorded for a full-size half-ton pickup.

Ram 1500 Wins Motor Trend Truck of the Year – Again

Chrysler’s big rig delivers body blow to new Chevy Silverado.

The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel.

The full-size Ram 1500 pickup has been named Motor Trend Truck of the Year – a doubly significant victory not only considering all the tough competition this year but for the fact that the Ram is the first-ever back-to-back winner of the widely followed award.

Well, that’s not entirely accurate.  The magazine focused its attention this year on the new EcoDiesel V6 version of the Ram 1500, the market’s first light-duty pickup to offer a high-mileage oil-burner under the hood.

“Not only did (the Ram diesel) withstand our rigorous testing, it thoroughly impressed our judges with its vast array of standard and optional equipment, and, most notable, its fuel-efficient, segment-exclusive EcoDiesel V-6. With 420 pound-feet of torque and up to 28 ‘Real MPG’ highway, the EcoDiesel is a true game-changer,” said Motor Trend’s Editor-In-Chief Ed Loh.

Ram Diesel Named Truck of Texas

Shutouts for Toyota Tundra, Chevrolet Silverado.

by on Oct.15, 2013

The 2014 Ram Diesel gets a tip of the 10 gallon hat from Texas Auto Writers.

The folks at General Motors have to be gritting their teeth and stomping their cowboy boots this morning.  Despite the general raves being heaped upon the maker’s new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, the General’s new offerings were nudged aside by the year-old Ram when the influential Texas Auto Writers wrapped up their annual pickup truck shoot-out.

Those longhorn journalists gave their Truck of Texas award – again — to the year-old Ram 1500. Well, to be more precise, this year’s winner is the new Ram 1500 diesel, the very first oil-burner to be offered in the half-ton full-size pickup segment.

Keep on Truckin'!

These and a host of other awards were handed out after two days of testing at the Texas Auto Writer’s Association’s 23rd Truck Rodeo. The competition — which puts a variety of trucks, traditional SUVs and even some more newfangled crossovers through a variety of on- and off-road torture tests  — delivered a few surprises, including shut-outs for both the new Chevrolet Silverado and Toyota Tundra models.

Ram Throws Down Gauntlet with New Diesel for Light-Duty Pickups

Maker has big expectations for high-torque, high-mileage oil-burner.

by on Jun.28, 2013

Brand CEO Reid Bigland with the full-size Ram 1500 pickup which gets a new diesel for 2014.

Chrysler is throwing down the gauntlet, its Ram truck division planning to become the first maker to offer a high-mileage diesel in its light-duty pickup line.

Ram, which is expected to post its 39th consecutive monthly sales increase next week, is betting that this will give it a critical advantage over competitors both domestic and foreign at a time when fuel prices continue to hover just below $4 a gallon in much of the country.  The question is whether potential buyers will balance the initial, $2,800 price premium against the longer-term savings on fuel.

The Last Word!

“When you look at the psyche of pickup truck owners,” Reid Bigland, the CEO of the Ram division, said  during a preview of the new powertrain, “they’re more aware of the benefits of a diesel engine” than the general U.S. population.
