Porsche Aiming to Sell 20,000 Mission E Battery Sports Cars

Volkswagen AG brands battle it out for control of company’s EV efforts.

Workers at Porsche's Zuffhausen plant in Germany agreed to wage cuts in order to get the job of building the new Mission E.

Porsche is aiming for annual sales of about 20,000 Mission E battery-electric vehicles, according to the sports car brand’s chief executive officer.

That would make it one of the more important products in the company’s line-up and more than double the numbers needed to turn a profit, according to another company official.

The launch of the Mission E in 2019 is part of an aggressive transformation planned by the Volkswagen Group, currently the world’s largest automaker by sales volume. But news reports from Germany suggest that there is an internal battle brewing between various VWAG brands as they position themselves to take the lead in battery-electric vehicle development.

Porsche May Add EV to Line-Up

Latest maker to take aim at Tesla.

Porsche showed the potential for battery power with its 918 Spyder - but may now go pure battery-electric.

Porsche may become the latest automaker to enter the high-performance electric vehicle market – and to take on battery-carmaker Tesla Motors.

The German sports car company already has introduced several hybrid and plug-in models, but it is considering a purely battery-based option, its chief executive suggested during the company’s annual meeting.

“In the not-too-distant future, we will present a seventh model line,” said CEO Matthias Mueller, noting the goal is to have an additional product line in showrooms by 2020. “There are already promising plans,” he added, “but no board decision yet.”

Ferdinand Porsche’s First Car Resurfaces After 111 Years

The Porsche P1 is formally known as the 1898 Egger-Lohner C.2. Phaeton.

It wasn’t your classic “barn find.”  In the case of the rare P1, it was found stuffed in the back of an old Austrian warehouse – since 1902.

Officially known as the Egger-Lohner electric vehicle, C.2 Phaeton, it’s the first car ever designed by the legendary Ferdinand Porsche. And it was one of several electric vehicles the automotive pioneer – later known for his groundbreaking sports cars – developed in his early years.
