Trucks Carrying the Load for Honda

New Ridgeline pickups, SUVs responsible for surging sales, profits.

When it first began rolling into the U.S. market nearly five decades, Honda put the emphasis on pint-sized products like the 600 minicar. The brand was barely noticed by American motorists until the twin oil shocks of the 1970s put fuel economy high on the priority list.

A new series of ads Honda is launching this week shows how much times have changed once again. Dubbed the “Power of Ridgeline,” the campaign focuses on Honda’s recently relaunched midsize pickup. While Honda continues to offer American buyers downsized models like the Fit, HR-V and Civic, it has reason to be focusing on the truck side of its line-up.

Overall, American Honda reported a 4.4% increase in sales for July, running ahead of a U.S. market that some fear is beginning to slow down after six years of rapid growth. But that only tells a part of the story, for it was the truck side of the line-up that propelled Honda’s strong showing last month, models like the Ridgeline, CR-V and Pilot up 12.2% year-over-year.


Ford Goes Wild(track) With Updated Ranger

The Ford Ranger Wildtrack bumps the midsize pickup into a higher level of refinement.

Ford is going wild as it prepares to launch an updated version of its midsize Ranger pickup in Europe. Make that Wildtrack, a new version of the truck making its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week.

The unveiling in Europe further bolsters hopes that the Detroit maker will finally move ahead on long-rumored plans to bring the Ranger back to the American market, filling a yawning gap left wide open when it killed off the old, U.S.-made Ranger a few years back.


“With the stunning new Wildtrak at the pinnacle of the line-up, the new Ford Ranger provides customers with an unbeatable combination of four-wheel drive capability, stand-out styling and premium features like SYNC 2 connectivity,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford of Europe. “Ranger is ready for any challenge – offering optimised fuel efficiency, towing and payload capacity, and class-leading wading capability.”


Automakers Regain Momentum in April – Market Looking at Best in Decade

Power forecast sees industry making up ground after cold winter.

Consumer demand for new vehicles during April is the best it’s been in 10 years, according to a new analysis by J.D. Power and LMC Automotive.

With the warmer, spring weather finally settling in across the U.S., total light-vehicle sales are projected to reach 1,463,700, a 5% increase compared with April 2014 and the highest level for the month since April 2005.  The total seasonally adjusted annual rate of sales, or SAAR, is expected to hit 16.6 million units.

“The industry continues to outperform prior-year levels with respect to retail sales and transaction prices,” said John Humphrey, senior vice president of the global automotive practice at J.D. Power. “The average new-vehicle transaction price so far in April is $30,680, on pace to achieve a new record for the month.” The current record was set in April 2014 when transaction prices averaged $29,948,” he said.

With gasoline prices plummeting below $3 a gallon in much of the country – and with further cuts expected – American motorists are shifting gears. November’s booming sales numbers were given strong momentum by the resurgent demand for fuel-hungry pickups, SUVs vans and even muscle cars.

Ironically, that’s not entirely good news for automakers like Ford Motor Co. On the positive side, sales of the new 2015 Mustang nearly doubled over last year’s volume, and Ford has a massive backlog of orders for its new F-150 pickup, the most profitable model in its portfolio.

Gain Traction!

But plunging pump prices also create some serious challenges, cautioned Raj Nair, Ford’s global product development chief.

“Certainly, low fuel prices make it hard to sell some vehicles like hybrids and electrics,” he said during a lunch at the Ford test track near the maker’s headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan.


Ram Outsells Silverado for 1st Time

The addition of the Ram 1500 Diesel has helped the truck gain new momentum in the market.

One month doesn’t a trend make.  And it’s too early to see whether General Motors’ worsening recall problems are having an impact – but for the first time ever, Fiat Chrysler’s Ram 1500 outsold rival GM’s Chevrolet Silverado 1500 last month  to become the U.S. market’s second-best-selling full-size pickup truck.

March also marked the first time since 1978 that Chevy’s big rig wasn’t in second place in the fast-reviving truck segment, behind only the long-dominant Ford F-150.

Keep on Truckin'!

The numbers were close, Ram delivering 42,532 pickups last month compared to the Silverado’s 42,247. And Chevy can take solace in the fact that it remains entrenched in second place for the year to date, holding a more than 10,000-unit lead over the Ram brand: 107,757 Silverado 1500s to 96,906 Ram 1500s.


Despite Plunging Gas Prices Fuel Economy on the Rise

Big gains made with new pickups, utility vehicles.

Even big trucks - like this Ram 1500 EcoDiesel are getting better mileage than ever, according to UMTRI.

With fuel prices dipping below $3.00 a gallon in many parts of the country, sales of pickup trucks, utility vehicles – even minivans – have been on the rise in recent months.  Despite the resurgence of these gas-gulping vehicles, the overall mileage of the new vehicles sold in November continued to rise.

The typical vehicle sold last month delivered an EPA-rated fuel economy of 24.8 mpg in November, up 0.1 mpg from the revised October figure, according to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, or UMTRI.

Fuel Up!

Perhaps more significantly, that means the typical new vehicle is now getting about 23% better mileage – a 4.7 mpg average increase, since October 2007, the first month of monitoring by UMTRI, noted lead researchers Michael Sivak and Brandon Schoettle.


GM Earnings Fall By Over Half for Q3

Maker hurt by restructuring costs; buoyed by European improvement.

General Motors reported its net income was cut in half during the third quarter as one-time adjustments for restructuring the company’s debt reduced profits to $700 million from the $1.5 billion reported for the same period a year ago.

Despite the drop income, GM chairman and chief executive officer Dan Akerson said he was satisfied that GM was still making steady progress as its North America Operations, where margins surpassed 9%, continued to show strength. And the maker also saw an improvement in its loss-making European operations as a new turnaround plan appeared to be taking hold.

A Profitable News Source!

During the third quarter, GM said net income to common stockholders was $700 million, or 45 cents per fully diluted share, down from $1.5 billion, or 89 cents per share a year ago.  Investors appeared to be taking the results in stride, however, with GM shares up in early trading. Excluding the one-time items, GM would have earned $1.7 billion, or 96 cents a share. That was ahead of the 94-cent forecast of analysts surveyed by FactSet.


Chrysler Net Income Surges 22%

Strong truck sales drive results – but mask other problems.

The resurgent boom in pickup sales was good news for the Chrysler Group which saw net income surge by 22% during the third quarter, in sharp contrast to the declines posted by both of the maker’s cross-town rivals.

Chrysler earned $464 million during the July to September period, up from $381 million the year before, marking the once-bankrupt automaker’s nine consecutive quarterly profit. Revenues, meanwhile, jumped 13.5%, to $17.6 billion, on the sale of 603,000 vehicles. That was an increase of 8% from a year ago.

But barely one in seven of Chrysler’s products – 82,000 in all — were sold outside North America, in sharp contrast to the results at General Motors and Ford Motor Co., who now depend on overseas markets for the majority of their demand and an increasing share of their revenues. And there are other challenges revealed by Chrysler’s latest earnings report.


GM Truck Sales Exceeding Maker’s Expectations

Both old and new models commanding higher prices than forecast.

GM's 2014 pickups could add a billion dollars to its bottom line, according to one forecast.

As it sells off its old full-sized pickups while ramping up production of two all-new models, things are going markedly better than forecast, according to several top General Motors executives, with sales exceeding expectations and the old truck commanding a higher price than planned.

The overall U.S. market has been rebounding faster than almost anyone has expected this year, with sales now forecast to reach or exceed 15.5 million for all of 2013, about 1 million more than last year. And full-size pickups have been leading the charge, the segment up more than 20% for the past seven months.

But GM pickup sales surged a whopping 44% in July compared to year-earlier numbers, with the outgoing 2013 model accounting for 85% of total volume for the month.

“It’s a nice transition,” said Chris Perry, general marketing manager for the Chevrolet Division which markets the most popular of GM’s two full-sized trucks, the Silverado. The other model is the GMC Sierra.


Strong Truck Sales Drive Solid June

Pickups, including import models like the Toyota Tundra, helped drive strong June sales.

Strong demand for pickups and other light trucks helped deliver the best June the auto industry has seen since the beginning of the long U.S. recession – several makers reporting their best sales ever.

While industry officials acknowledged the “volatility” of the economy could yet deliver a setback – much as Wall Street traders experienced last month, the general mood is growing increasingly upbeat with June sales numbers solidly exceeding most analysts’ full year forecast.

“While we are cautious in terms of the economic outlook, we expect our sales pace to remain steady in the second-half of the year,” said Jonathan Browning, CEO of the Volkswagen Group of America.

VW was, in fact, one of the few brands to report a downturn for the month, though that came after a strong surge earlier this year that saw the German maker post its best numbers since the era of the original Volkswagen Beetle. And while the VW brand itself fell 3.2% for the month, the sibling Audi brand reported a record June  and its 30th consecutive month of increases.
