Automakers, Shows Changing to Feature Technology

Shows finding ways to include tech with automakers.

GM's decision to debut the Chevy Bolt at the CES instead of at the Detroit Auto Show shows the shift in how automakers view auto shows.

The world is changing and the auto industry is scurrying to change with it.

Transportation options are multiplying and makers are attempting to be players in each segment whether is simply producing new types vehicles, i.e. small SUVs and crossovers, to satisfy consumers or jumping into the personal mobility market through partnerships like the latest between General Motors and Lyft.

Toyota, VW Announce Major Ride-Sharing Partnerships

Japanese maker teaming up with Uber; German carmaker pumps $300 mil into Gett.

Toyota and Volkswagen are the latest makers to announce deals with ride-sharing companies. Toyota is teaming with Uber.

The number of major automakers entering the ride-sharing realm continues to grow, Toyota and Volkswagen just the two latest.

The Japanese maker has announced a broad alliance with Uber, the world’s largest ride-sharing service, with a $1 billion investment. Volkswagen, meanwhile, is investing $300 million in Gett, a global ride-hailing service. The two announcements come just months after General Motors said it would launch car-sharing service Maven and invest $500 million in Uber’s largest competitor, Lyft.

“Ridesharing has huge potential in terms of shaping the future of mobility,” said Shigeki Tomoyama, senior managing officer of Toyota and president of its new subsidiary, the Connected Company. “Through this collaboration with Uber, we would like to explore new ways of delivering secure, convenient and attractive mobility services to customers.” (more…)

GM Wants to Profitably Redefine Personal Mobility

CEO Barra outlines $5 bil investment in autonomous vehicles, carsharing and other game-changers.

GM is "working to redefine our relationship with customers and personal mobility," says CEO Barra.

With autonomous vehicles, car-sharing programs and alternative powertrains reshaping the auto industry, some manufacturers have begun referring to themselves as “personal mobility companies.” The challenge is finding a way to profit from that transformation, said General Motors CEO Mary Barra, as she opened the maker’s “Global Business Conference” with investors and financial analysts.

General Motors is exploring ways to expand the services it offers customers around the world and expects to invest $5 billion in the effort as part of an effort to meet the competition from new challengers such as Apple, Google and Tesla,  Barra said, during the conference at the GM Proving Grounds an hour outside Detroit.
