Infiniti Reveals Project Black S

Luxury maker looking to add hybrid-based performance sub-brand.

by on Mar.02, 2017

Infiniti will show off a hybrid-powered concept version of the Q60 coupe in Geneva.

Infiniti is going from red to black – not on the bottom line but on the street.

It plans to introduce what it is describing as a “radical reinterpretation” of its Q60 coupe at the Geneva Motor Show next week, a vehicle that marks the debut of what it calls “Project Black S,” an “exploration” of a new high-performance brand-within-a-brand.

Auto Show News!

While Nissan’s luxury marque isn’t tipping its hat much in advance of the Swiss car show, Project Black S appears to be a reincarnation of another high-performance sub-brand project Infiniti had explored a few years ago, called Eau Rouge. But it will take a very different approach under the hood.

First Drive: 2017 Acura NSX

More than the sum of its numbers.

by on Mar.14, 2016

A fully loaded NSX will nip $210,000.

Both feet planted firmly onto the floor, the engine revs up and holds, a resonant exhaust note echoing through the cabin.  Launch Control ready, I lift my foot off the brake and am rewarded with a neck-snapping lurch that even an aircraft carrier pilot could appreciate. A mixture of gasoline, adrenaline and G forces narrow my vision as we race down the track, past 60, 80, 100 mph, before finally slamming on the brakes again.

After a series of missteps and delays, the Acura NSX is back, and our first drive reveals it was well worth the wait. In an era of mind-boggling horsepower and performance numbers, the new two-seater is neither the fastest, nor most powerful, sports car on the market, but its exotic looks, breakthrough hybrid drivetrain and uncanny ride and handling make the 2017 Acura NSX a serious contender in a crowded market.

Performance News!

And with its combination of hybrid power and all-wheel-drive, the new NSX is a surprisingly easy car to handle, something that could even make it a daily driver for some buyers.

Tomorrow’s Mustang Will Likely Adopt Radical New Powertrain Options

Downsized engines, e-turbos, hybrids and other options all under study.

by on Sep.18, 2014

The 2015 Ford Mustang now gets an EcoBoost engine option that balances performance and mileage.

When Ford Motor Co. unveiled its 50th anniversary Mustang late last year, it delivered a shock to the market by adding a new turbocharged 4-cylinder engine to its powertrain line-up alongside the pony car’s classic V-8 and V-6 packages.

The EcoBoost engine is expected to have significant appeal to fuel economy-minded buyers, especially those overseas, where Ford will aggressively market the Mustang for the first time. The inline-four also will help Ford prepare to meet increasingly stringent mileage and emissions standards in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

A Real Performer!

But it is likely to be just a first step in what could become a radical transformation in the powertrain options Mustang buyers will be offered in the not-too-distant future. Various Ford officials tell TheDetroitBureau.com that the range of alternatives that could be required to keep the pony car in the fleet range from even higher-tech turbo and supercharged engines to gas-electric hybrids that can deliver both improved mileage and serious performance simultaneously.

Acura Debuting RLX Sport Hybrid with SH-AWD in LA

Version of 3-motor hybrid system to also power new NSX.

by on Nov.01, 2013

Acura's RLX adopts a new, 3-motor hybrid drive.

Acura will introduce its new high-performance hybrid system at the L.A. Auto Show this month.  The through-the-road all-wheel-drive system will make its first appearance on the Acura RLX luxury sedan but will follow, in slightly modified form, on the reborn Acura NSX set to reach market by 2015.

The Acura RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD will become the new flagship of the Honda luxury brand’s line-up and, the maker claims, will deliver a blend of “V-8-like performance with 4-cylinder fuel economy,” in this case up to 30 miles per gallon in the combined city/highway cycle. It also promises more sure-footed handling, with the ability to direct torque, as needed, to improve cornering.

The Last Word!

The new version of the RLX will debut the latest of three new hybrid drivetrains developed by Honda to replace its original Integrated Motor Assist, or IMA system.  Each is targeted at a particular segment of the market, from the low-cost single-motor system in the Honda Civic to the new twin-motor drive of the 2014 Accord to the new 3-motor hybrid that will be focused on the Acura brand.
