Audi Slashing $12b in Costs to Cover Electrification Goal

Luxury marque needs to offset cost of diesel emissions scandal.

Audi showed off its e-Tron Sportback Concept at this year's Shanghai Motor Show.

As it shifts away from its long dependence on diesel powertrains, Audi is looking to rapidly ramp up its electrification program, but the luxury arm of Volkswagen Group will have to slash spending to cover the costs of its new technology.

Audi intends to cut costs by 10 billion euros, or $12 billion, by 2022 to support its aggressive shift to electrification, according to a report by Germany’s Handelsblatt business publication.

That money will help it bring to market five all-new battery-electric vehicles, or BEVs, as well as a range of plug-in hybrids and conventional hybrids, according to the report.

FCA, UAW Reach Tentative Contract

Union now turns attention to Ford, GM.

UAW Pres. Dennis Williams had been willing to strike - but said that would have meant failure.

After a marathon push meant to avert a possible confrontation, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles reached a tentative agreement with the United Auto Workers that is expected to become a template for contracts with the General Motors and Ford Motor Co., as well.

The settlement was announced more than 19 hours after the union granted FCA U.S. an hour-by-hour extension of the previous 4-year contract to avert a potential costly strike that could have proved costly to both sides.

While specific details have not been released, UAW President Dennis Williams said the settlement with FCA meets all three of the union’s top objectives, among them job security, better wages and improvements for second-tier workers earnings barely half as much as senior colleagues.

Will Ford eventually bring mini-crossover to U.S.?

The Ford EcoSport crossover shares platforms with the subcompact Fiesta model.

Ford is offering a first glimpse of a new mini-crossover that will share platforms with the maker’s global subcompact, the Fiesta.

Dubbed the Ford EcoSport, the new model made its formal debut this week at Auto Expo 2012, the big Indian motor show in New Delhi.  Underscoring the significance of the new model was the fact that Ford CEO Alan Mulally was personally on hand to lift the covers.

“The all-new Ford EcoSport reflects our commitment to serve our customers with the cars and trucks they truly want and value,” said the 66-year-old executive.

The latest example of the so-called One Ford strategy – which calls for using common platforms and body “top hats” for markets around the world – the EcoSport is primarily aimed at what Ford describes as “major worldwide growth markets,” notably including India, China and Brazil.
