Mercedes’ AMG Aiming to Redefine the Future of Performance

Power output isn't necessarily the ultimate measure.

The Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 is powered by a twin-turbo V-6. AMG is looking to change the perception of what's considered "high performance."

It wasn’t all that long ago that delivering 300 horsepower was considered impressive and 400 almost unattainable. As performance fans know, a number of models have lately smashed through the 1,000 hp barrier, the new Bugatti Chiron punching the number up to 1,500.

But is horsepower alone the goal? Is that the only way to define performance? And if so, how far can the industry go?

While no slouch, with plenty of products topping the 600 horsepower, Daimler AG’s AMG arm wants to define what performance means on its own terms, and simply chasing ever-bigger numbers is not what that’s all about, said the German subsidiary’s CEO Tobias Moers, during a small media roundtable at the 2016 New York International Auto Show. Mazda Claims Double Win at World Car Awards

For such a little car, the Mazda MX-5 Miata was the big winner at the New York International Auto Show on Thursday morning, collecting not only the trophy for World Car of the Year, but also being honored as the globe’s top automotive design.

The twin win came hours before the first formal unveiling of a special auto show unveiling of the Miata RF. The retractable fastback version of the two-seat roadster generated rave reviews when it was shown to a smaller group of journalists on Tuesday night.

“What a day for Mazda,” blurted out Masahiro Moro, who recently took over as CEO of Mazda’s North American operations. “This is a brand icon,” he declared, hoisting the hefty World Car of the Year trophy and inviting key members of the development team to join him on stage.

Nissan Unleashes Titan Pickup Truck in New York

"Standard" truck follows in footsteps of Titan XD.

The standard Titan is powered by a 5.6-liter V8 engine, and offers rear and all-wheel-drive.

Nissan continues to broaden its efforts to expand its footprint in the lucrative American truck market by unveiling the 2017 Nissan Titan at the New York International Auto Show.

After hitting bottom during the 2008 2009 recession, truck sales have steadily climbed and General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler have earned profits from their truck lines and Nissan, as well as Toyota, have taken up the challenge over the past new offerings.

Mitsubishi Grows Mirage Line-up with New G4

New model builds on Mirage hatchback unveiled last fall.

The new Mitsubishi Mirage G4 unveiled in New York adds to the Mirage line-up that featured only a hatchback until now.

Mitsubishi follows the mantra of the tortoise: slow but steady wins the race. The maker that was on the edge of death is now slowly unfurling a product portfolio with the latest model being the Mirage G4 shown at the New York Auto Show.

“A few years ago we entered the subcompact segment with the Mirage hatchback and its popularity with consumers has grown every year with its combination of top fuel economy, attractive pricing and one of the industry’s best new car warranties,” said MMNA executive vice president, Don Swearingen.

Volvo Moving Upscale with XC90 Excellence

The race to the top of the luxury heap heats up.

Volvo is looking to leverage its award-winning XC90 SUV to jump to the top of the luxury market.

With dozens of new models vying for attention of affluent buyers, the definition of a luxury vehicles continues to evolve.

Volvo used the New York International Auto Show, where the struggle for the attention of luxury buyers in very intense, to unveil the Volvo XC90 Excellence, where the seating is limited but the vehicle suggests that the race to deliver the ultimate luxury package is far from complete.

Volvo displayed the four-seat ultra-luxurious variant of the XC90 sport-utility vehicle, which was named North American Truck of the Year in January, as production begins in Gothenburg, Sweden. The new Kia Cadenza gets a makeover for 2017 with a significant upgrade in safety technologies.

Kia is continuing its new product onslaught with the introduction in New York of the 2017 Cadenza.

The new Cadenza, which will go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2016, improves upon all the elements that made its predecessor, according to Orth Hedrick, Kia Motors America vice president of product planning.

The Audi R8 Spyder rolls into the NY Auto Show.

There are plenty of folks who love the Audi R8, and that includes Scott Keogh, the brand’s U.S. CEO. Audi was little more than an asterisk on the sales charts. Today, it’s a force to be reckoned with, sales growing 250% since the launch of the sports car nearly a decade ago.

While it might target a small niche, “The R8 put Audi on the map,” says industry veteran Keogh, helping the brand “put old luxury on notice.”

Audi has three versions of the R8 on its stand at the New York International Auto Show this week, including the daunting, 610-horsepower Audi R8 V10 Plus, as well as the R8 LMS race car. There’s also the brand-new member of the family, the 2017 Audi R8 Spyder.

Jaguar Steps Up High Performance Game with F-Type SVR

Jaguar Land Rover's Ian Callum introduces the new Jaguar F-Type SVR at the New York International Auto Show.

Jaguar Land Rover is pushing ahead with its plans to challenge key German rivals, such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz, in the high performance arena.

BMW has the well-received M-Class, while Mercedes-Benz has AMG, which have both developed reputations for unique and deft specialized engineering. Jaguar Land Rover, however, is ready to match its German competitors with SVO or Special Vehicle Operations and its new SVR badge, which made its debut last year on an ultra-luxurious Range Rover vehicle.

Mark Stanton, director of JLR’s SVO, operations said the next step for the company is to remake a Jaguar F-Type into a SVR, the vehicle that will be the fastest Jaguar ever built with a top speed of 200 miles per hour. JLR has set up a special base for the SVO operation, said Stanton. (more…)

Subaru Looking to Impress with New Impreza

New model utilizes new architecture.

The 2017 Subaru Impreza is built on a new small car architecture developed the maker's parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries.

After eight consecutive years of sales growth, Subaru is planning to launch an all-wheel-drive replacement for the Impreza, the company’s popular, five-door compact sedan.

Thomas Doll,  president of Subaru of America Inc., told a noisy party the evening prior to the opening of the New York International Auto Show that the 2017 model is built on an all-new global architecture developed by Fuji Heavy Industries.

The wheelbase on the new sedan, which will make its official debut during the New York International Auto Show, sits on a wheel –base that is an inch-longer than the wheel-base of the current Impreza. (more…)
