Japan’s Auto Safety Scandal Spreads to Subaru

Automaker admits 30-year lapse; will recall over 250,000 vehicles.

Subaru CEO Yasuyuki Yoshinaga bowed to reporters to acknowledge his company's safety lapses.

Subaru acknowledged Friday it improperly inspected products sold on the Japanese market for over 30 years and will recall as many as 255,000 vehicles.

The company is the latest Japanese automaker to reveal faulty inspection practices, Nissan earlier this month reporting similar lapses. The announcement by Subaru comes at a time when the once-lofty image of Japanese industry has been severely tarnished by a raft of scandals that include rigging of fel economy numbers by Mitsubishi, the production of faulty airbags by supplier Takata, and the falsification of data by metals manufacturer Kobe Steel.

“The final inspection process is very important and we acknowledge that we did not meet requirements,” Subaru Chief Executive Officer Yasuyuki Yoshinaga at a news conference on Friday in Tokyo. “We used the same process for more than 30 years without realizing that it did not meet ministry requirements.”

Nissan targets the Altima for recall.

In most years, a recall of 220,000 midsize sedans might make major headlines. This year, however, Nissan’s latest safety news could almost be lost in the noise, the auto industry already recalling roughly 40 million vehicles for all matter of problems.

But the Japanese maker is warning that it is looking into the possibility that its problems could be more serious, leading to a possible expansion of today’s announcement.

The initial news, at least, involves 220,000 Nissan Altima sedans sold in the U.S. during the 2013 model-year because their secondary hood latches could fail. If that happens, the hoods could potentially fly open while the vehicles are in motion.

With the opening of its new proving grounds in western Sweden, the Volvo Car Group says it is moving “a step closer” to its goal of having no one killed or seriously injured in one of its cars by 2020.

Not long ago, such claims might have seemed the stuff of fantasy, or worse, cynical over-promise. While there’s no question that, in the U.S., highway fatalities have fallen nearly 40% from their peak, more than 30,000 Americans are still being killed each year. Nonetheless, we may very well be approaching an era when the highway death toll sinks to zero, industry experts believe.

A sign of that possibility will come with the release of a new study next month by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety which will show a record number of vehicles experienced no deaths during the four-year study period from 2009 through the end of 2012.

“It’s a tall order,” says IIHS Senior Vice President Russ Rader, “But the goal is definitely feasible. We’re already seeing this happen.”


Nissan Recalling Over 900,000 Vehicles Due to Engine Stalling Issue

Nissan Motor Co. is recalling more than 900,000 vehicles due to a problem with defective accelerator sensors used in a wide range of models that could cause their engines to stall unexpectedly.

The vast majority of the vehicles covered by the recall were produced for the Japanese export market, though some were shipped to other regions of the world. That includes the United States, were  nearly 100,000 of the products are being targeted for repair, most of them sold through the Infiniti brand.

According to Nissan, the sensor used to detect the way the throttle pedal is being depressed can become unstable. That can lead the vehicle to accelerate less aggressively than a motorist might intend – and, in some circumstances, it can cause the vehicle to stop or even stall out entirely.


Nissan Launches Third Recall in a Month

Latest problem focuses on defective engine bolts.

Nissan's latest recall impacts a number of vehicles, including the 2012 Infiniti M.

Nissan Motor Co. announced its third safety recall in December, more than a half-dozen different models impacted by the various problems.

The latest safety-related service action involves 14,000 vehicles – including the 2011 Infiniti FX, 2012 Infiniti M, and the 2011-2012 Nissan Frontier, Xterra, Pathfinder and NV models.  The recall is designed to fix faulty engine bolts.

The defective bolts in the vehicles may break, leading to oil leaks and engine failure. The automaker began the investigation – which covers vehicles manufactured between June and September of this year — after receiving several reports of bolts breaking.

Earlier in the month, Nissan announced that it would recall 34,000 Sentra sedans due to a problem with their battery cables.  That problem could cause engines to stall. The recall included 2010 and 2011 model-year vehicles equipped with Nissan’s MR-20 engines and manufactured between May 11, 2010 and May 22, 2010, and from July 8, 2010 to October 25, 2010.

Nissan reveals an advanced system that can warn of a collision a driver can't even see yet.

Nissan has unveiled a trio of new high-tech safety systems that are designed to help prevent collisions or, where that’s not possible, reduce the chance of injuries and fatalities.

The maker’s move is part of a general trend in the market that has been led as much by the industry as by government regulators and reflects the growing consumer demand for safer vehicles.

While basic improvements in vehicle design have helped improve automotive safety many of the latest advances rely on onboard digital technologies that can monitor the area around a vehicle and, if necessary, respond even faster than a human driver.

That, in fact, is the key to Nissan’s new Acceleration Suppression for Pedal Misapplication technology, which can prevent a driver from inadvertently stepping on the throttle when that might lead to an accident.  The system relies on the multi-camera system now used by the maker’s Around View Monitor, which provides a seemingly birds-eye image of the terrain immediately surrounding the vehicle.
