Chevrolet Malibu Redux

New 2016 Chevy sedan better suited to "hand-to-hand combat" in crowded midsize market.

by on Apr.01, 2015

Chevrolet rolled out its new Malibu Hybrid in New York. The hybrid gets up to 48 mpg.

Chevrolet has been on a roll lately with products as diverse as the Corvette and Impala. But its also lobbed a few duds, including the midsize Malibu sedan it launched three years ago. Demand has lagged well behind expectations despite an “emergency refresh” made barely a year after its introduction.

But the maker looks to be on a much better track with the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu making its debut at the New York International Auto Show this week. More stylish, better equipped and more fuel-efficient – with the hybrid version coming later this year that will exceed 45 mpg, said Chevy execs at the New York Auto Show earlier today – the new sedan will nonetheless face a challenging task in a segment crowded with 17 other competitors.

Your Reliable Source!

“It’s been difficult to win in this segment,” acknowledged Steve Majoros, Chevy’s passenger car marketing director, during a preview of the 2016 Malibu. But the maker really has no choice in one of the largest segments of the U.S. market which means, “We have to get people to fundamentally think differently about this brand.”

“Building on the Volt,” says chief engineer.

by on Mar.25, 2015

Cutaway shows the Malibu Hybrid's layout.

When Chevrolet launches a completely redesigned version of its midsize Malibu later this year, it will add a new hybrid option expected to be one of the segment’s most fuel-efficient models.

Initial estimates suggest the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid will come in at “better than” 45 miles per gallon, which would put it ahead of hybrid versions of the midsize Ford Fusion and Toyota Camry models, and within shot of the segment-leading Honda Accord Hybrid, which is rated at 47 mpg.

Plug In!

“We’re bringing a hybrid to the midsize segment to compete,” Jesse Ortega, the chief engineer on the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu project, said during a background briefing, adding his belief that Chevy is “very well-armed” to take on key domestic and import competitors.

If you’re having a hard time keeping up with all the SAVs, GTs, Gran Coupes and Active Tourers, here’s a spoiler alert: the BMW line-up is about to get bigger still.
