Ford Plant Readies to Meet Global Demand for Mustang

Maker gives nod to original pony car in 2015 model.

Ford's Flat Rock, Michigan, plant is ready to start churning out the 2015 Mustang. The company is celebrating 50 years of Mustang production.

One of the biggest launches in Ford Motor Co.’s recent history is getting underway as the all-new, sixth generation Ford Mustang rolls off the line for the first time at the company’s assembly plant in Flat Rock, Michigan, this week.

“Mustang is and will continue to be an automotive icon,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford president of The Americas. “Expanding its availability globally affords our customers around the world the opportunity to have a true firsthand Mustang experience – one unlike any other.”

In April, Ford celebrated the 50th anniversary of the original Mustang. To commemorate the event, each 2015 model will be adorned with a badge on the instrument panel that includes the galloping pony logo and the words “Mustang – Since 1964.” (more…)

The 2015 Ford Mustang celebrates 50 years of the legendary pony car with improvements in almost every aspect of the car.

“We’re still tweaking,” concedes Tom Barnes, the head of the vehicle dynamics team bringing the new 2015 Ford Mustang to life.

But with the all-new pony car set to roll into showrooms in just a matter of months, most of the work is completed, giving Ford the chance to show off the new Mustang by taking a handful of journalists under the hood – and for some hot laps around its Dearborn, Michigan, proving grounds.

While far from a hands-on driving experience, the event revealed that the 50th anniversary Mustang is likely to live up to the promise laid out by Ford’s global product development chief Raj Nair, who boasted to the media group that “This is the greatest, best-performing Mustang we have ever had.”

The new Mustang is expected to borrow much of its design cues from the Ford Evos concept.

The much-anticipated 50th anniversary Ford Mustang is now scheduled to make its official debut with a special global launch event on Dec. 5 that will include synchronized showings in Dearborn, Mich., Los Angeles, Sydney, Shanghai and Barcelona.

Jim Farley, Ford executive vice president, said Mustang’s unique iconic value has led to the company to organize the official reveal as a special event with a 15-day countdown leading up to the fifth of December.

Is that a 2014-1/2 Mustang under the covers?

It’s a big year for Ford.  Make that the Ford Mustang. The original “pony car” recaptured the sales lead for the first half of 2013 after slipping behind the reborn Chevrolet Camaro for several years. Meanwhile, the Detroit maker has already begun ramping up a year of celebrations meant to mark the Golden anniversary of the Mustang which debuted in April 1964.

Back then, new vehicles appeared according to a rigid timetable and it wasn’t unusual for dealers to soap up their windows to keep customers waiting for that one day when they’d reveal the latest offerings each Autumn. The odd model that debuted mid-year would get a special designation.

In the case of the original Ford Mustang, it was labeled a 1964-1/2. And according to several reports and a few of’s own sources, the eagerly awaited, next-generation Mustang will carry a 2014-1/2 designation.

Or, more precisely, a limited run of the new pony cars – known by the internal codename S550 – will carry the half-year designation, according to website Mustangs Daily.
